Dynamical properties of constrained drops
In this communication we analyze the behavior of excited drops contained in
spherical volumes. We study different properties of the dynamical systems i.e.
the maximum Lyapunov exponent MLE, the asymptotic distance in momentum space
andthe normalized variance of the maximum fragment NVM. It is
shown that the constrained systems behaves as undergoing a first order phase
transition at low densities while as a second order one at high densities. The
transition from liquid-like to vapor-like behavior is signaled both by the
caloric curves, thermal response functions and the MLE. The relationship

Persistence of two genotypes of Neisseria gonorrhoeae during transmission.
Isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae were tested using a highly discriminatory typing method, opa typing, to examine the genetic diversity over a 2-year study period of isolates from all consecutive patients with gonorrhea attending the Genitourinary Medicine clinic in Sheffield, United Kingdom. Two opa genotypes were detected throughout the 2-year time period and comprised 41% of all strains tested. The persistence of two opa types was investigated further to determine the apparent genetic stability, by examining the ability of isolates to undergo intragenic and intergenic recombination and mutation in vitro. Intragenic recombination or mutation involving the opa genes of N. gonorrhoeae in the selected isolates was not detected, but intergenic recombination did occur. opa genes of N. gonorrhoeae in vivo appear to diversify primarily through intergenic recombination. Intergenic recombination in vivo would require the presence of a mixed gonococcal infection, in which an individual is concurrently colonized with more than one strain of N. gonorrhoeae. We propose that the level of diversity of opa genotypes in a population is linked to the degree of sexual mixing of individuals and the incidence of mixed infections of N. gonorrhoeae
Expansion dynamics of Lennard-Jones systems
The dynamics of the expansion of a Lennard-Jones system, initially confined
at high density and subsequently expanding freely in the vacuum, is confronted
to an expanding statistical ensemble, derived in the diluted quasi-ideal
Boltzmann approximation. The description proves to be fairly accurate at
predicting average one-body global observables, but important deviations are
observed in the configuration-space structure of the events. Possible
implications for finite expanding physical systems are outlined
Identification of individuals with gonorrhoea within sexual networks: a population-based study.
BACKGROUND: Molecular typing of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and contact tracing provide a combined approach for analysis of sexual networks in metropolitan areas, although there are some difficulties in application. Our aim was to examine the application of high-throughput molecular approaches that can identify individuals in linked sexual networks. METHODS: We characterised 2045 isolates of N gonorrhoeae from patients presenting at 13 major sexually transmitted infection clinics in London, UK, between June 1 and Nov 30, 2004. All isolates were assigned a sequence type (strain) on the basis of the sequences of internal fragments of two highly polymorphic loci, por and tbpB. These types were matched to demographic and behavioural data obtained at the clinic for each patient. We assessed the congruence in the demographic and behavioural characteristics of individuals infected with the same strain. FINDINGS: We identified 21 prevalent strains in this diverse gonococcal population, each infecting between 20 and 124 individuals. Seven of these strains were predominantly from men who have sex with men; the remaining 14 were predominantly from heterosexual people. No differences were recorded between the strains associated with men who have sex with men in the demographic or behavioural characteristics of infected individuals. By contrast, significant differences in age (p<0.0001), ethnicity (p=0.001), proportion of women (p=0.01), and HIV status (p=0.03) were noted between the 14 prevalent heterosexual-associated strains. Heterosexuals with strains not shared by others in the sample were significantly older (p=0.0005) and more likely to have had sex outside the UK (p<0.0001) than those sharing a strain with at least one other. INTERPRETATION: The discriminatory high throughput strain characterisation method applied here identified localised transmission networks and suggests little bridging between networks of men who have sex with men and heterosexual networks
Caloric Curves in two and three-dimensional Lennard-Jones-like systems including Long-range forces
We present a systematic study of the thermodynamics of two and
three-dimensional generalized Lennard-Jones () systems focusing on the
relationship between the range of the potential, the system density and its
dimension. We found that the existence of negative specific heats depends on
these three factors and not only on the potential range and the density of the

Revisiting the STEC Testing Approach: Using espK and espV to Make Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) Detection More Reliable in Beef
Current methods for screening Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157 and non-O157 in beef enrichments typically rely on the molecular detection of stx, eae, and serogroup-specific wzx or wzy gene fragments. As these genetic markers can also be found in some non-EHEC strains, a number of “false positive” results are obtained. Here, we explore the suitability of five novel molecular markers, espK, espV, ureD, Z2098, and CRISPRO26:H11 as candidates for a more accurate screening of EHEC strains of greater clinical significance in industrialized countries. Of the 1739 beef enrichments tested, 180 were positive for both stx and eae genes. Ninety (50%) of these tested negative for espK, espV, ureD, and Z2098, but 12 out of these negative samples were positive for the CRISPRO26:H11 gene marker specific for a newly emerging virulent EHEC O26:H11 French clone. We show that screening for stx, eae, espK, and espV, in association with the CRISPRO26:H11 marker is a better approach to narrow down the EHEC screening step in beef enrichments. The number of potentially positive samples was reduced by 48.88% by means of this alternative strategy compared to the European and American reference methods, thus substantially improving the discriminatory power of EHEC screening systems. This approach is in line with the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) opinion on pathogenic STEC published in 2013

Connection between the Largest Lyapunov Exponent, Density Fluctuation and Multifragmentation in Excited Nuclear Systems
Within a quantum molecular dynamics model we calculate the largest Lyapunov
exponent (LLE), density fluctuation and mass distribution of fragments for a
series of nuclear systems at different initial temperatures. It is found that
the peaks at the temperature ("critical temperature") where the density
fluctuation reaches a maximal value and the mass distribution of fragments is
best fitted by the Fisher's power law from which the critical exponents for
mass and charge distribution are obtained. The time-dependent behavior of the
LLE and density fluctuation is studied. We find that the time scale of the
density fluctuation is much longer than the inverse LLE, which indicates that
the chaotic motion can be well developed during the process of fragment
formation. The finite-size effect on "critical temperature" for nuclear systems

Non equilibrium effects in fragmentation
We study, using molecular dynamics techniques, how boundary conditions affect
the process of fragmentation of finite, highly excited, Lennard-Jones systems.
We analyze the behavior of the caloric curves (CC), the associated thermal
response functions (TRF) and cluster mass distributions for constrained and
unconstrained hot drops. It is shown that the resulting CC's for the
constrained case differ from the one in the unconstrained case, mainly in the
presence of a ``vapor branch''. This branch is absent in the free expanding
case even at high energies . This effect is traced to the role played by the
collective expansion motion. On the other hand, we found that the recently
proposed characteristic features of a first order phase transition taking place
in a finite isolated system, i.e. abnormally large kinetic energy fluctuations
and a negative branch in the TRF, are present for the constrained (dilute) as
well the unconstrained case. The microscopic origin of this behavior is also
