    Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV guidelines: Nurses’ views at four primary healthcare facilities in the Limpopo Province

    Background: When new guidelines for existing programmes are introduced, it is often the clinicians tasked with the execution of the guidelines who bear the brunt of the changes. Frequently their opinions are not sought. In this study, the researcher interviewed registered nurses working in the field of the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to gain an understanding of their perspectives on the changes introduced to the guidelines. The guideline changes in 2014 were to move from the World Health Organization (WHO) Option B to Option B + which prescribes lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) for all HIV-positive pregnant women regardless of CD4 cell count.Objective: To determine what the registered nurses’ perspectives are on the PMTCT programme as implemented at four PHC facilities in the Limpopo Province.Method: For this qualitative investigation, a descriptive research design was implemented. The data were collected during semi-structured interviews with nurses from four primary healthcare facilities in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Data were analysed using thematic analysis.Results: Challenges preventing effective implementation (e.g. increased workloads, viz. staff shortages; poor planning of training; equipment and medication shortages and long lead times; poor patient education) were identified.Conclusion: In spite of the successes of the PMTCT programme, considerable challenges still prevail; lack of patient education, poor facilities management and staff shortages could potentially influence the implementation of the PMTCT guidelines negatively

    This Article argues that the Court’s recent decisions have effectively revived Pennoyer’s focus on physical presence and status, at the expense of the fairness and contact considerations set forth in International Shoe, as the bases for asserting personal jurisdiction. Part II details the jurisdictional analysis under both Pennoyer and International Shoe. Part III discusses the evolution of personal jurisdiction doctrine under International Shoe. Part IV demonstrates that the Court’s recent decisions have revitalized Pennoyer’s territorially based regime, and consequently diminished the thrust of International Shoe

    The effect of wind on foraging activity of the tenebrionid beetle Lepidochora discoidalis in the sand dunes of the Namib Desert

    The foraging activity of the tenebrionid beetle, Lepidochora discoidalis, was studied in the sand dunes of the Namib Desert. The surface activity of this beetle species was found to be correlated both with time of day and wind speed. Higher numbers were observed on the dune surface between 17:00-19:00 h when wind speeds were consistently higher than 9 m/s. Noise and vibrations in the dune sand were found to be highly dependent on wind speed. Wind blowing at speeds higher than 5 m/s lifts the surface sand grains and generates vibrations in the sand. The peak frequency of these vibrations is in the range of 700-1000 Hz. The vibrational amplitude at the peak frequency is on average 40 dB higher at those wind speeds when the beetles are active compared to lower wind speeds. The results indicate that wind is an important cue for these beetles and can be perceived by buried beetles through substrate vibrations.S. Afr. J Zool. 1997,32(4

    What can we learn from GIS-based prospectivity mapping in mature terranes?

    This study used robust spatial statistics to systematically examine regional-scale targeting criteria that have been suggested for orogenic gold mineralization in the Yilgarn Craton. The spatial relationships between known orogenic gold mineralization and a series of targeting criteria were examined using both the number and endowment of the deposits. Both proximity and containment analyses were performed and a series of measures used to assess whether the geological feature being tested could be considered a good regional-scale targeting criteria. Spatial analysis indicated the best targeting criteria for orogenic gold mineralization in the Yilgarn Craton are: containment within greenstones, proximity to mafic group granite intrusions, proximity to regional-scale fault bends, and regional fault density. Using these targeting criteria, a fuzzy logic prospectivity map was generated. Fuzzy membership values were derived using the %endowment/%area statistic and the proximity and density threshold values set from the class at which the maximum %endowment/%area statistic was observed. The spatial analysis revealed some surprising results, with several targeting criteria that were thought to have a strong relationship with orogenic gold mineralization in the Yilgarn craton shown to have weak relationships when a robust statistical analysis was performed. Due to the analysis focussing on the relationship between endowment and the geological features, it raised the question as to how much influence the Golden Mile had on the results. Separate analysis of the super-giant and giant deposits compared to the remaining smaller deposits indicated that controls on the large deposits may differ to the controls on smaller deposits

    Porous silica spheres as indoor air pollutant scavengers

    Porous silica spheres were investigated for their effectiveness in removing typical indoor air pollutants, such as aromatic and carbonyl-containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and compared to the commercially available polymer styrene-divinylbenzene (XAD-4). The silica spheres and the XAD-4 resin were coated on denuder sampling devices and their adsorption efficiencies for volatile organic compounds evaluated using an indoor air simulation chamber. Real indoor sampling was also undertaken to evaluate the affinity of the silica adsorbents for a variety of indoor VOCs. The silica sphere adsorbents were found to have a high affinity for polar carbonyls and found to be more efficient than the XAD-4 resin at adsorbing carbonyls in an indoor environment

    Design and fabrication of chemically robust three-dimensional microfluidic valves

    A current problem in microfluidics is that poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), used to fabricate many microfluidic devices, is not compatible with most organic solvents. Fluorinated compounds are more chemically robust than PDMS but, historically, it has been nearly impossible to construct valves out of them by multilayer soft lithography (MSL) due to the difficulty of bonding layers made of non-stick fluoropolymers necessary to create traditional microfluidic valves. With our new three-dimensional (3D) valve design we can fabricate microfluidic devices from fluorinated compounds in a single monolithic layer that is resistant to most organic solvents with minimal swelling. This paper describes the design and development of 3D microfluidic valves by molding of a perfluoropolyether, termed Sifel, onto printed wax molds. The fabrication of Sifel-based microfluidic devices using this technique has great potential in chemical synthesis and analysis
