    Determination of Flower Characteristics of Some Kiwifruit Genotypes (Actinidia Spp.) Obtained with Breeding Program

    All Actinidia species are dioecious, male and female flowers grow on separate kiwifruit plants. In breeding studies, it is generally desirable to obtain female individuals. However, male plants are also of great importance for pollination. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the flower characteristics of the genotypes obtained by breeding studies. This research was conducted in the kiwifruit breeding plot of Yalova Atatürk Horticultural Central Research Institute for two years. Genotypes obtained from cultivars belonging to Actinidia deliciosa and Actinidia chinensis were used in the research. At the time of flowering, phenological observations of male and female genotypes, which are prominent in the population, have been made and the developmental stages of the flowers have been determined. At least 10 flowers of each genotype were used to determine the morphological characteristics.Number of leaves, number of petals, number of male organs, number of filaments, number of female organs, number of female organs and number of stylus were examined in order to determine flower characteristics. When the data obtained as a result of two years are evaluated; significant differences have been obtained particularly in terms of flowering time, flowering period, the number of stylus, the filament size, the number of female organs and the number of male organs. Female cultivars/genotypes tend to flowering later than male cultivars/genotypes, and female cultivars/genotypes have shorter filament length than male cultivars/genotypes. It has also been clearly observed that ovaries are not functional in male types

    Modeling Heatshield Erosion Due to Dust Particle Impacts for a Martian Entry Vehicle

    Because planetary missions to Mars take years from initial design to arrival at Mars, and because of the unpredictability of major global dust storms, the de-sign of the thermal protection system (TPS) of a Mars entry vehicle requires an estimation for the potential damage caused by dust particle impacts on the heat-shield. This paper will review previous analytical and experimental approaches to modeling dust particle ero-sion and will compare the legacy models against more modern computational techniques and new dust ero-sion models that will be based on upcoming experi-ments in the German Aerospace Center (DLR) GBK facility. The various models will be compared by incorporating them into the Icarus material response code applied to a representative vehicle entering the Martian atmosphere

    Molecular Cytogenetic Analysis and Resequencing of Contactin Associated Protein-Like 2 in Autism Spectrum Disorders

    Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of related neurodevelopmental syndromes with complex genetic etiology.1 We identified a de novo chromosome 7q inversion disrupting Autism susceptibility candidate 2 (AUTS2) and Contactin Associated Protein-Like 2 (CNTNAP2) in a child with cognitive and social delay. We focused our initial analysis on CNTNAP2 based on our demonstration of disruption of Contactin 4 (CNTN4) in a patient with ASD;2 the recent finding of rare homozygous mutations in CNTNAP2 leading to intractable seizures and autism;3 and in situ and biochemical analyses reported herein that confirm expression in relevant brain regions and demonstrate the presence of CNTNAP2 in the synaptic plasma membrane fraction of rat forebrain lysates. We comprehensively resequenced CNTNAP2 in 635 patients and 942 controls. Among patients, we identified a total of 27 nonsynonymous changes; 13 were rare and unique to patients and 8 of these were predicted to be deleterious by bioinformatic approaches and/or altered residues conserved across all species. One variant at a highly conserved position, I869T, was inherited by four affected children in three unrelated families, but was not found in 4010 control chromosomes (p = 0.014). Overall, this resequencing data demonstrated a modest nonsignificant increase in the burden of rare variants in cases versus controls. Nonethless, when viewed in light of two independent studies published in this issue of AJHG showing a relationship between ASD and common CNTNAP2 alleles,4,5 the cytogenetic and mutation screening data suggest that rare variants may also contribute to the pathophysiology of ASD, but place limits on the magnitude of this contribution

    Constraints on the χ_(c1) versus χ_(c2) polarizations in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV

    The polarizations of promptly produced χ_(c1) and χ_(c2) mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at √s=8  TeV. The χ_c states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χ_c → J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e⁺e⁻, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χ_(c2) to χ_(c1) yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ → μ⁺μ⁻ decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum
