Hypereosinophilic syndrome with erythrodermia

A 77-year-old male, with a history of heart failure and atrial fibrillation receiving warfarin, hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus and hyperuricaemia, with a one-year history of erythematous and desquamative skin lesions in the trunk, pruritic and moderate recurrent eosinophilia. After allergic, parasitic, autoimmune and neoplastic causes were ruled out, the diagnosis of idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome was done. He was treated with prednisone and hydroxyurea, resulting in complete remission of eosinophilia and progressive improvement of dermal lesions.Varón de 77 años de edad, con antecedentes de insuficiencia cardiaca y fibrilación auricular recibiendo warfarina, hipotiroidismo, diabetes mellitus e hiperuricemia, con historia de un año de lesiones dérmicas eritematosas y descamativas en el tronco, pruriginosas y con moderada eosinofilia recurrente. Después de descartarse causas alérgicas, parasitarias, autoinmunes y neoplásicas, se hizo el diagnóstico de síndrome hipereosinofílico idiopático. Recibió tratamiento con prednisona e hidroxiurea, consiguiéndose una remisión completa de la eosinofilia y mejoría progresiva de las lesiones dérmicas

EVALUACIÓN DE LA ACTIVIDAD ANTIMICROBIANA DEL ACEITE DE PENICILINA (JUSTICIA ADHATODA L.), FRENTE A MICROORGANISMOS PATÓGENOS EN ALIMENTOS

Este proyecto busca evaluar el estudio fitoquímico y la actividad biológica de la especie Justicia adhatoda L., frente a microorganismos patógenos encontrados en los alimentos naturales de origen vegetal (no procesados).La metodología empleada, parte de una revisión bibliográfica de plantas arvenses, también denominadas malas hierbas o malezas y su potencial antimicrobiano. Posteriormente se aplicarán una serie de técnicas extractivas, de separación, purificación y análisis de los principios activos de la Penicilina por análisis espectroscópicos (CG). La obtención de los metabolitos secundarios, nos dará paso al estudio de inhibición frente a bacterias como la E. colli y a S. aureus.Buscando en el aceite Justicia adhatoda L. impacto como bioherbicida a partir de extractos polares de la Penicilina, frente agentes infecciosos que pueden provocar enfermedades del consumidor por la ingestión de alimentos no procesados y de uso continuo en la canasta familiar

Sexual exploitation of children and teenagers is a degrading form of child labor that is one of today’s most serious human rights violations. Th aim of this study, carried out by reviewing national and international literature, is to propose policies and actions to effctively prevent and eradicate sexual exploitation of children and teenagers, ensuring their healthy and balanced physical, psychological, intellectual, moral and social development. It was completed by the “Minorities, Discrimination and Effctiveness” Research Group of the Masters Program on Rights at the Law Center at the Unisal of São Paulo (EU Lorraine). It was associated with the III Latin American Seminar on Human Rights, Multiculturalism and Diversity in Latin America. Th research began in 2011 and was completed in 2012.La unión marital de hecho, como institución humana conformadora de familia, es una realidad y un tema fundamental para esta investigación, cuyo punto de partida es una introspección sobre la familia formada por vínculos naturales frente a la conformada por vínculo de matrimonio. Personality in patients with migraine evaluated with the "Temperament and Character Inventory"

The objective of this study was to assess the personality profile of a sample of Mexican patients with migraine using the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). A cross-sectional study was performed including adult migraine patients identified from the outpatient neurology clinics of two large teaching hospitals in Mexico City. Patients were asked to voluntarily participate in the study. A physician conducted a standardised diagnostic interview adhering to the criteria of the International Headache Society (IHS). Patients were interviewed and administered the TCI. We used two healthy controls groups and a third group of non-migraine pain controls. One hundred and fortytwo subjects with migraine, 108 healthy blood donors, 269 young healthy controls and 30 patients with non-migraine pain (NMP) were included in the study. Patients with migraine had higher scores in the dimension harm avoidance (HA) and all its sub-dimensions (p<0.05) than healthy patients. Patients with non-migraine pain had high scores in HA and low scores in novelty seeking, self-directedness and cooperativeness. Blood donors had high scores in the following subdimensions: HA1, HA4 and C3 (Cooperativeness). Personality features consistent with migraine are avoidance, rigidity, reserve and obsessivity. Our study shows that patients with chronic pain share some of the personality features of patients with migraine but their TCI profile could be indicative of cluster C avoidant personality. Blood donors were shown to have more energy, with a tendency to help other people and be more optimistic. The results support serotoninergic involvement as explaining the physiopathology of migraine

Homologue expression of a fungal endo-1,4-β-Dxylanase using submerged and solid substrate fermentations

The xyn5 gene, which encodes an endo-β-1,4-xylanase (Xyn5), in Aspergillus niger GS1 was cloned into an expression cassette under the control of constitutive glyceraldhehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene promoter. The expression system was designed to produce the recombinant enzyme containing a six-histidine peptide fused to the carboxyl end of the protein. The efficiency of Xyn5 production under submerged (SmF) and solid-state (SSF) fermentation was investigated using the homologous cotransformed A. niger AB4.1. A productivity of 17.1 U/(l·h) was estimated for SSF and 3.2 U/(l·h) for SmF calculated at peak value of enzyme titers. Recombinant Xyn5 obtained by SSF on polyurethane fiber, was purified 5.1-fold by anion exchange and immobilized metal affinity chromatography, with 35.7% recovery. The purified recombinant enzyme showed an apparent molecular weight of 30 kDa and optimal activity (522 U/mg protein) at pH 5.5 and 50°C.Key words: Aspergillus niger GS1, xylanolytic activity, solid-state fermentation, homologue expression, polyurethane fiber

Hipertiroidismo secundario a coriocarcinoma metastásico, reporte de caso

Aunque la enfermedad de Graves sigue siendo considerada la causa más frecuente de hipertiroidismo clínico en el embarazo, la producción desproporcionadamente alta de gonadotropina coriónica humana (HCG) como ocurre en la enfermedad trofoblástica gestacional (ETG), es otra de las posibles causas, debido a la analogía entre ésta (HCG) y la TSH. Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 23 años que consulta por presentar dolor pélvico de moderada intensidad, síntomas respiratorios, taquicardia, temblor, astenia y pérdida de peso; a quien se le diagnostica coriocarcinoma metastásico a pulmón, con tirotoxicosis asociada, por lo que requirió manejo quimioterapéutico y antitiroideo. Se presenta este caso, por ser el hipertiroidismo secundario a coriocarcinoma una patología poco frecuente pero que debe diagnosticarse y tratarse oportunamente, ya que de eso depende el pronóstico del paciente

Una de las características de la enseñanza-aprendizaje de lenguas en nuestro país es el énfasis excesivo en el desarrollo de habilidades orales en detrimento del desarrollo de las escritas y de la redacción de textos en particular. Entre las razones que se plantean se encuentran, que la comunicación oral es la que más se utiliza y que a los estudiantes les interesa más aprender a hablar que a escribir. Ambas razones son muy ciertas, no obstante, el desarrollo vertiginoso de las telecomunicaciones, en especial, por medio de redes como Internet, impone la necesidad de reevaluar esta posición y trabajar el aspecto motivacional en los alumnos de modo tal que se comprenda la necesidad de también aprender las formas escritas

Readiness Potential in Parkinson's Disease: Effects of L-Dopa Therapy and Brain Transplants

Accurate local positioning systems usually use a network of anchor nodes at known locations to track mobile nodes based on the measurement of the time of arrival (TOA) at anchor nodes of beacon signals transmitted by the mobile nodes. To localize the mobile node either TOA processing, where the unknown transmit time is estimated along with the node location, or time difference of arrival (TDOA) processing, where the transmit time is eliminated before estimating the node location, can be used. We show that the position error bound of both these formulations are the same by analyzing the Cramér-Rao lower bound. When processing data collected in field trials, however, we observed that the TOA processing yields better localization accuracy, and explain this behavior using differential geometry-based curvature measures that show that the TDOA cost function has greater degree of non-linearity.T. Follicle Wave and Natural Estrus Synchronization Superovulation in Holstein Cows.

The effects of two superovulation protocols were compared (synchronization of the follicle wave SFW and natural estrus  NE) in embryos collected from Holstein cows. Twenty cows were chosen as donors, body condition of 2.75  -3.5; between 40 and 60 months, with normal cycles and no breeding problems. The cows were randomly assigned to SFW treatment (n=10), and the NE treatment (n=10). The SFW group was synchronized with intravaginal progester-one plus estradiol  benzoate, on day 0, and increasing doses  of FSH for 4 days, twice a day, from  the 4th on. The im-plant was removed on the 6thday, and prostaglandin was applied. On the 8th day, insemination was made at 6 am and 6 pm. The NE group received  increasing doses of FSH twice a day, during 4 days, from the 10th day. On the 12th day prostaglandin was administered, and insemination took place on the 14th day, at 6 am and 6 pm.  The em-bryos were recovered from the two groups without surgery, 7 days after the first artificial insemination. The values of embryos for transference were 5.7 + 0.76 and 2.8 + 0.31 (P &lt; 0.05) for SFW and NE, respectively
