    Quantum Monte Carlo Study of electrons in low dimensions

    We report on a diffusion Monte Carlo investigation of model electron systems in low dimensions, which should be relevant to the physics of systems obtainable nowadays in semiconductor heterostructures. In particular, we present results for a one dimensional electron gas, at selected values of the coupling strength and confinement parameter, briefly analyzing the pair correlations and relating them to predictions by Schulz for a Luttinger liquid with long-range interactions. We find no evidence of the the Bloch instability yielded by approximate treatments such as the STLS and DFT schemes.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.     A stochastic delay differential model of cerebral autoregulation

    Mathematical models of the cardiovascular system and of cerebral autoregulation (CAR) have been employed for several years in order to describe the time course of pressures and flows changes subsequent to postural changes. The assessment of the degree of efficiency of cerebral auto regulation has indeed importance in the prognosis of such conditions as cerebro-vascular accidents or Alzheimer. In the quest for a simple but realistic mathematical description of cardiovascular control, which may be fitted onto non-invasive experimental observations after postural changes, the present work proposes a first version of an empirical Stochastic Delay Differential Equations (SDDEs) model. The model consists of a total of four SDDEs and two ancillary algebraic equations, incorporates four distinct delayed controls from the brain onto different components of the circulation, and is able to accurately capture the time course of mean arterial pressure and cerebral blood flow velocity signals, reproducing observed auto-correlated error around the expected drift

    The frequency band used by cellular telephones includes the eigenfrequencies of a dielectric sphere with physical characteristics close to those of a human head. Proceeding from the spatial features of the natural modes of such a sphere we propose an independent and clear evident accuracy test for the complicated numerical calculations which are conducted when estimating the potential hazard due to the use of cellular telephones, in particular, for the check of a proper handling of the electromagnetic shape resonances of a human head.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure with 2 eps file

    Modeling Escape from a One-Dimensional Potential Well at Zero or Very Low Temperatures

    The process of activation out a one-dimensional potential is investigated systematically in zero and nonzero temperature conditions. The features of the potential are traced through statistical escape out of its wells whose depths are tuned in time by a forcing term. The process is carried out on the damped pendulum system imposing specific initial conditions on the potential variable. While for relatively high values of the dissipation the statistical properties follow a behavior that can be derived from the standard Kramers model, decreasing the dissipation we observe responses/deviations which have regular dependencies on initial conditions, temperature, and loss parameter itself. It is shown that failures of the thermal activation model are originated at low temperatures, and very low dissipation, by the initial conditions and intrinsic, namely T=0, characteristic oscillations of the potential-generated dynamical equation.Comment: 25 pages and 13 Figure
