Spinning down newborn neutron stars: nonlinear development of the r-mode instability
We model the nonlinear saturation of the r-mode instability via three-mode
couplings and the effects of the instability on the spin evolution of young
neutron stars. We include one mode triplet consisting of the r-mode and two
near resonant inertial modes that couple to it. We find that the spectrum of
evolutions is more diverse than previously thought. The evolution of the star
is dynamic and initially dominated by fast neutrino cooling. Nonlinear effects
become important when the r-mode amplitude grows above its first parametric
instability threshold. The balance between neutrino cooling and viscous heating
plays an important role in the evolution. Depending on the initial r-mode
amplitude, and on the strength of the viscosity and of the cooling this balance
can occur at different temperatures. If thermal equilibrium occurs on the
r-mode stability curve, where gravitational driving equals viscous damping, the
evolution may be adequately described by a one-mode model. Otherwise, nonlinear
effects are important and lead to various more complicated scenarios. Once
thermal balance occurs, the star spins-down oscillating between thermal
equilibrium states until the instability is no longer active. For lower
viscosity we observe runaway behavior in which the r-mode amplitude passes
several parametric instability thresholds. In this case more modes need to be
included to model the evolution accurately. In the most optimistic case, we
find that gravitational radiation from the r-mode instability in a very young,
fast spinning neutron star within about 1 Mpc of Earth may be detectable by
advanced LIGO for years, and perhaps decades, after formation. Details
regarding the amplitude and duration of the emission depend on the internal
dissipation of the modes of the star, which would be probed by such detections.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D.

Evaluation of the Performance Characteristics of CGLSS II and U.S. NLDN Using Ground-Truth Dalta from Launch Complex 398, Kennedy Space Center, Florida
A new comprehensive lightning instrumentation system has been designed for Launch Complex 39B (LC39B) at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. This new instrumentation system includes seven synchronized high-speed video cameras, current sensors installed on the nine downconductors of the new lightning protection system (LPS) for LC39B; four dH/dt, 3-axis measurement stations; and five dE/dt stations composed of two antennas each. The LPS received 8 direct lightning strikes (a total of 19 strokes) from March 31 through December 31 2011. The measured peak currents and locations are compared to those reported by the Cloud-to-Ground Lightning Surveillance System (CGLSS II) and the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN). Results of comparison are presented and analyzed in this paper
COST-S: a new methodology and tools for sewerage asset management based on whole life costs
This is the final version of the article. Freely available from IWA Publishing via the link in this record. This paper discusses the development of a methodology and software tools aimed at
assisting management decisions in order to provide acceptable performance at a
minimum cost over the whole life of the sewerage system. Whole Life Costing (WLC)
approaches have been shown to offer an ideal platform to provide investment and
operational management tools that take account of the timing of interventions, system
behaviour and performance all within a sensible economic and engineering framework.
The need for such a methodology and the requirements for its useful implementation
are introduced first. The paper then describes how research collaboration between the
UK Water Industry and two UK research centres (Centre for Water Systems at Exeter
University and Pennine Water Group at Universities of Sheffield and Bradford), and
supported by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council grant,
resulted in an innovative, practical and auditable methodology with associated tools for
better proactive management of ageing and rapidly deteriorating sewerage systems. The authors would like to

High frequency longitudinal and transverse dynamics in water
High-resolution, inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the dynamic
structure factor S(Q,\omega) of liquid water have been performed for wave
vectors Q between 4 and 30 nm^-1 in distinctly different thermodynamic
conditions (T= 263 - 420 K ; at, or close to, ambient pressure and at P = 2
kbar). In agreement with previous inelastic x-ray and neutron studies, the
presence of two inelastic contributions (one dispersing with Q and the other
almost non-dispersive) is confirmed. The study of their temperature- and
Q-dependence provides strong support for a dynamics of liquid water controlled
by the structural relaxation process. A viscoelastic analysis of the
Q-dispersing mode, associated with the longitudinal dynamics, reveals that the
sound velocity undergoes the complete transition from the adiabatic sound
velocity (c_0) (viscous limit) to the infinite frequency sound velocity
(c_\infinity) (elastic limit). On decreasing Q, as the transition regime is
approached from the elastic side, we observe a decrease of the intensity of the
second, weakly dispersing feature, which completely disappears when the viscous
regime is reached. These findings unambiguously identify the second excitation
to be a signature of the transverse dynamics with a longitudinal symmetry
component, which becomes visible in the S(Q,\omega) as soon as the purely
viscous regime is left.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure
Tet2 Rescues Age-Related Regenerative Decline and Enhances Cognitive Function in the Adult Mouse Brain.
Restoring adult stem cell function provides an exciting approach for rejuvenating the aging brain. However, molecular mechanisms mediating neurogenic rejuvenation remain elusive. Here we report that the enzyme ten eleven translocation methylcytosine dioxygenase 2 (Tet2), which catalyzes the production of 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC), rescues age-related decline in adult neurogenesis and enhances cognition in mice. We detected a decrease in Tet2 expression and 5hmC levels in the aged hippocampus associated with adult neurogenesis. Mimicking an aged condition in young adults by abrogating Tet2 expression within the hippocampal neurogenic niche, or adult neural stem cells, decreased neurogenesis and impaired learning and memory. In a heterochronic parabiosis rejuvenation model, hippocampal Tet2 expression was restored. Overexpressing Tet2 in the hippocampal neurogenic niche of mature adults increased 5hmC associated with neurogenic processes, offset the precipitous age-related decline in neurogenesis, and enhanced learning and memory. Our data identify Tet2 as a key molecular mediator of neurogenic rejuvenation
Finite-Size Scaling of the Domain Wall Entropy Distributions for the 2D Ising Spin Glass
The statistics of domain walls for ground states of the 2D Ising spin glass
with +1 and -1 bonds are studied for square lattices with , and = 0.5, where is the fraction of negative bonds, using periodic
and/or antiperiodic boundary conditions. When is even, almost all domain
walls have energy = 0 or 4. When is odd, most domain walls have
= 2. The probability distribution of the entropy, , is found
to depend strongly on . When , the probability distribution
of is approximately exponential. The variance of this distribution
is proportional to , in agreement with the results of Saul and Kardar. For
the distribution of is not symmetric about zero. In
these cases the variance still appears to be linear in , but the average of
grows faster than . This suggests a one-parameter scaling
form for the -dependence of the distributions of for .Comment: 13 page

An analysis of the elastic properties of a porous aluminium oxide film by means of indentation techniques
The elastic modulus of thin films can be directly determined by instrumented indentation when the indenter penetration does not exceed a fraction of the film thickness, depending on the mechanical properties of both film and substrate. When it is not possible, application of models for separating the contribution of the substrate is necessary. In this work, the robustness of several models is analyzed in the case of the elastic modulus determination of a porous aluminium oxide film produced by anodization of an aluminium alloy. Instrumented indentation tests employing a Berkovich indenter were performe data nanometric scale, which allowed a direct determination of the film elastic modulus, whose value was found to be approximately 11 GPa. However, at a micrometric scale the elastic modulus tends toward the value corresponding to the substrate, of approximately 73 GPa. The objective of the present work is to apply different models for testing their consistency over the complete set of indentation data obtained from both classical tests in microindentation and the continuous stiffness measurement mode in nanoindentation. This approach shows the continuity between the two scales of measurement thus allowing a better representation of the elastic modulus variation between two limits corresponding to the substrate and film elastic moduli. Gao's function proved to be the best to represen the elastic modulus variation
