Degrees of tenant isolation for cloud-hosted software services : a cross-case analysis
A challenge, when implementing multi-tenancy
in a cloud-hosted software service, is how to ensure that the
performance and resource consumption of one tenant does
not adversely affect other tenants. Software designers and
architects must achieve an optimal degree of tenant isolation
for their chosen application requirements. The objective
of this research is to reveal the trade-offs, commonalities,
and differences to be considered when implementing
the required degree of tenant isolation. This research uses
a cross-case analysis of selected open source cloud-hosted
software engineering tools to empirically evaluate varying
degrees of isolation between tenants. Our research reveals
five commonalities across the case studies: disk space reduction,
use of locking, low cloud resource consumption,
customization and use of plug-in architecture, and choice of
multi-tenancy pattern. Two of these common factors compromise
tenant isolation. The degree of isolation is reduced
when there is no strategy to reduce disk space and customization
and plug-in architecture is not adopted. In contrast,
the degree of isolation improves when careful consideration
is given to how to handle a high workload, locking of
data and processes is used to prevent clashes between multiple
tenants and selection of appropriate multi-tenancy pattern. The research also revealed five case study differences:
size of generated data, cloud resource consumption, sensitivity
to workload changes, the effect of the software process,
client latency and bandwidth, and type of software process.
The degree of isolation is impaired, in our results, by
the large size of generated data, high resource consumption
by certain software processes, high or fluctuating workload,
low client latency, and bandwidth when transferring multiple
files between repositories. Additionally, this research
provides a novel explanatory framework for (i) mapping tenant
isolation to different software development processes,
cloud resources and layers of the cloud stack; and (ii) explaining
the different trade-offs to consider affecting tenant
isolation (i.e. resource sharing, the number of users/requests,
customizability, the size of generated data, the scope of control
of the cloud application stack and business constraints)
when implementing multi-tenant cloud-hosted software services.
This research suggests that software architects have
to pay attention to the trade-offs, commonalities, and differences
we identify to achieve their degree of tenant isolation
requirements

Amniotic membrane application in surgical treatment of conjunctival tumors
The amniotic membrane (AM) has special properties, making it ideal for clinical applications in various surgical fields like ophthalmology. It is used more frequently to cover conjunctival and corneal defects. In our retrospective study we have been combined 68 patients with epibulbar conjunctival tumors they have been surgically treated in the period of 2011–2021. Seven (10.3%) patients have been treated with AM application after surgical removal of the tumor. 54 (79%) cases were malignant, and 14 (21%) were benign. In the analyzed dataset the males had just slightly higher chance of malignancy than females, 80% versus 78.3%. For the significancy calculation the Fisher exact test was used and the result proved no significancy (p = 0.99). Six patients with AM application were malignant. The observed difference in the number of quadrants of the bulbar conjunctiva infiltrated versus significant malignancy with p = 0.050 calculated by Fisher Exact test and with p = 0.023 calculated by Likelihood-ratio test. The results of our study indicate that AM grafts are an effective alternative to cover defects after removal of epibulbar lesions due to their anti-inflammatory properties because the conjunctiva must be preserved, and especially the most important application is in malignant epibulbar conjunctival tumors
Postural control during reaching while sitting and general motor behaviour when learning to walk
AimTo study changes in muscular postural strategies and general motor behaviour during the transition to independent walking. Postural control was assessed at its two functional levels: (1) direction specificity, in which dorsal muscles are primarily activated when reaching forward; and (2) fine-tuning of direction specificity. MethodIn an explorative longitudinal study, surface electromyograms of the arm, trunk, and neck muscles of 28 typically developing infants were recorded during reaching while sitting. Each infant was assessed in three developmental phases: during pull-to-stand (T0), first independent steps (T1), and 1 month after T1 (T2). Motor behaviour was assessed using the Infant Motor Profile (IMP). The effect on developmental outcome measures (postural parameters and IMP) of the developmental phases (T0, T1, T2) was estimated using linear mixed-effects models. ResultsNone of the postural parameters changed significantly over time. However, individual developmental trajectories showed infant-specific postural reorganizational changes. Total IMP score decreased between T0 and T1 (mean IMP score 95% and 91% respectively; p InterpretationTypically developing infants do not show consistent patterns of postural reorganization but show individual muscular strategies during the transition to independent walking. Work-family spillover among Japanese dual-earner couples: A large community-based study
Objectives: To examine the effects of multiple types of work-family spillover (work-to-family negative spillover, WFNS; family-to-work negative spillover, FWNS; and work-family positive spillover, WFPS) on psychological distress among Japanese dual-earner couples with preschool children. Methods: 2,346 parents completed questionnaires measuring work-family spillover, work- and family-specific variables (i.e., job demands and resources, family demands and resources), and psychological distress. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted by entering demographic characteristics (gender, age, age of the youngest child, and job contract) in step 1, job demands and resources in step 2, family demands and resources in step 3, work-family spillover in step 4, and three two-way interactions between types of work-family spillover and gender in the final step. Results: Both WFNS and FWNS were positively related to psychological distress after controlling for demographic characteristics and domain specific variables (i.e. job and family demands/resources), and FWNS (ß=0.26) had a stronger relation with psychological distress than WFNS (ß=0.16). Although WFPS was significantly and negatively related to psychological distress, the relationship was weak (ß=-0.05). In addition, two-way interactions of WFNS and FWNS with gender were found; the impact of both WFNS and FWNS on psychological distress is stronger for females than for males. No significant interaction effect was observed between WFPS and gender. Conclusions: In this study of Japanese dual-earner couples with preschool children, work-family negative spillover had a stronger relationship with psychological distress than positive spillover. Gender had a moderating effect on the relationship between negative spillover and psychological distress
