    Economic performance or electoral necessity? Evaluating the system of voluntary income to political parties

    Whilst the public funding of political parties is the norm in western democracies, its comprehensive introduction has been resisted in Britain. Political and electoral arrangements in Britain require parties to function and campaign on a regular basis, whilst their income follows cycles largely related to general elections. This article shows that the best predictor of party income is the necessity of a well-funded general election campaign rather than party performance. As a result, income can only be controlled by parties to a limited degree, which jeopardises their ability to determine their own financial position and fulfil their functions as political parties

    The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.     Exposure and connectedness to natural environments: An examination of the measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups

    Detachment from nature is contributing to the environmental crisis and reversing this trend requires detailed monitoring and targeted interventions to reconnect people to nature. Most tools measuring nature exposure and attachment were developed in high-income countries and little is known about their robustness across national and linguistic groups. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey to assess measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and the Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). While multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) of the NES supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, only partial scalar invariance was supported across national and linguistic groups. MG-CFA of the CNS also supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, but only partial scalar invariance of a 7-item version of the CNS across national and linguistic groups. Nation-level associations between NES and CNS scores were negligible, likely reflecting a lack of conceptual clarity over what the NES is measuring. Individual-level associations between both measures and sociodemographic variables were weak. Findings suggest that the CNS-7 may be a useful tool to measure nature connectedness globally, but measures other than the NES may be needed to capture nature exposure cross-culturally

    Production process monitoring by serial mapping of microbial carbon flux distributions using a novel sensor reactor approach: I - Sensor reactor system

    A novel Sensor Reactor technology is presented which permits C-13 labeling experiments for metabolic flux analysis during large-scale, semi-industrial, (fed-) batch fermentation processes deriving a series of flux maps that document fermentation courses in detail. The small-scale Sensor Reactor can be inoculated within 1.50-1.20 s via a special inoculation unit with an inoculation volume accuracy of 1.025 +/- 0.021 L. The large-scale production reactor (here: 300 L) and the Sensor Reactor were run in parallel master/ slave modes to control the current pH, temperature, pressure and dissolved oxygen values as changing set points for the Sensor Reactor. Using an automated pulsing technology, glucose pulses of 5 g/L could be realized within 0.51 s. The similarity of fermentations in the Sensor Reactor with the production process was demonstrated by studying L-lysine production with C. glutamicum during multiple, 'simulated' labeling experiments each lasting 2.5 h.     Serial flux mapping of Corynebacterium glutamicum during fed-batch L-lysine production using the sensor reactor approach

    Using our recently developed sensor reactor approach, lysine-producing, nongrowing Corynebacterium glutamicum MH20-22B cells were subjected to serial (13)C-labeling experiments for flux analysis during the leucine-limited fed-batch production phase in a 300-L bioreactor. Based on two-dimensional (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of (13)C-labeling patterns of cytoplasmic free metabolites, metabolic flux distributions in the central metabolism were successfully determined. Focusing on the highly concentrated metabolite L-glutamate, the working hypothesis was validated that the equilibration of labeling patterns in intracellular pools was much faster (up to 9.45 min) than the labeling period (3 h) used in the experiments. Analysis of anaplerotic reactions revealed that highly selective lysine production was accompanied by a significant reduction of decarboxylating reactions from 10 mol% to only 2 mol%, whereas PEP/pyruvate-carboxylating fluxes remained constant at about 40 mol% of consumed glucose. These results support the conclusion that an optimized C. glutamicum L-lysine producer should possess increased PEP carboxylase and/or pyruvate carboxylase activity combined with downregulated, decarboxylating fluxes consuming oxaloacetate/malate. The findings also illustrate the usefulness of the sensor reactor approach in the study of industrial fermentations
