Alginate Films Encapsulating Lemongrass Essential Oil as Affected by Spray Calcium Application

[EN] The necessity of producing innovative packaging systems has directed the attention of food industries towards the use of biodegradable polymers for developing new films able to protect foods and to extend their shelf-life, with lower environmental impact. In particular, edible films combining hydrophilic and hydrophobic ingredients could retard moisture loss, gas migration and ensure food integrity, reducing the necessity of using synthetic plastics. Alginate-based films obtained from emulsions of lemongrass essential oil (at 0.1% and 0.5%) in aqueous alginate solutions (1%), with Tween 80 as surfactant (0.3%), were obtained by casting and characterized as to microstructure and thermal behavior, as well as tensile, barrier and optical properties. Films were also crosslinked through spraying calcium chloride onto the film surface and the influence of oil emulsification and the crosslinking effect on the final film properties were evaluated. The film microstructure, analyzed through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) revealed discontinuities in films containing essential oil associated with droplet flocculation and coalescence during drying, while calcium diffusion into the matrix was enhanced. The presence of essential oil reduced the film stiffness whereas calcium addition lowered the film¿s water solubility, increasing tensile strength and reducing the extensibility coherent with its crosslinking effect. This research was funded by the Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (MINECO) of Spain, through the project AGL2016-76699-R.Cofelice, M.; Cuomo, F.; Chiralt, A. Efficacy of the treatment of developmental language disorder: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Background. Language disorder is the most frequent developmental disorder in childhood and it has a significant negative impact on children’s development. The goal of the present review was to systematically analyze the effectiveness of interventions in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) from an evidence-based perspective. Methods. We considered systematic reviews, meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), control group cohort studies on any type of intervention aimed at improving children’s skills in the phono-articulatory, phonological, semantic-lexical, and morpho-syntactic fields in preschool and primary school children (up to eight years of age) that were diagnosed with DLD.We identified 27 full-length studies, 26 RCT and one review. Results. Early intensive intervention in three- and four-year-old children has a positive effect on phonological expressive and receptive skills and acquisitions are maintained in the medium term. Less evidence is available on the treatment of expressive vocabulary (and no evidence on receptive vocabulary). Intervention on morphological and syntactic skills has effective results on expressive (but not receptive) skills; however, a number of inconsistent results have also been reported. Only one study reports a positive effect of treatment on inferential narrative skills. Limited evidence is also available on the treatment of meta-phonological skills. More studies investigated the effectiveness of interventions on general language skills, which now appears as a promising area of investigation, even though results are not all consistent. Conclusions. The effectiveness of interventions over expressive and receptive phonological skills, morpho-syntactic skills, as well as inferential skills in narrative context underscores the importance that these trainings be implemented in children with DLD

The Legro Burial Ground Archaeological Excavations and Funerary Hardware Analysis: a Shift in Nineteenth Century Mortuary Consumer Behavior in Rochester, New Hampshire

    No full text
In September 2009, archaeologists from Independent Archaeological Consulting, LLC (IAC) of Portsmouth, New Hampshire completed the disinterment of the Legro family burial ground, encountering the remains of four adults and seven children. The burial ground was once located in a quiet corner of the Legro family farm in Rochester, (Strafford County) New Hampshire. Modern highway construction drastically altered the historic landscape , leaving the burial ground isolated within the Exit 15 off ramp alongside NH Route 16. When proposed highway construction required relocation of the burial ground, the subsequent archaeological excavations resulted in the discovery of a myriad of burial treatments spanning the dynamic period between 1800 and 1865 leading up to the development of the modern funerary industry. Analysis of the Legro funerary hardware assemblage in terms of material culture provided historic archaeologists with a unique case study to demonstrate how an increase in hardware complexity parallels a shift in mortuary consumer behavior. In addition, the shift in material culture coincides with the transition from home based burial practices to a reliance on professionals trained to manage the new American way of death

The Italian Yearbook of Human Rights 2018 offers an up-to-date overview of the measures Italy has taken to adapt its legislation and policies to inter-national human rights law and to comply with commitments voluntarily assumed by the Italian Government at the international level on the sub-ject of fundamental rights. The 2018 Yearbook surveys the most significant activities of national and local Italian actors at domestic and international level, including civil society organisations and universities. It also dedicates space to recommendations made by international monitoring bodies within the framework of the United Nations, OSCE, the Council of Europe, and the European Union. Finally, the Yearbook provides a selection of in-ternational and national case-law that casts light on Italy's position vis-\ue0-vis internationally recognised human rights."Italy and Human Rights in 2017: Time to Restart" is the title of the 2018 Year-book introduction. From this year onwards, the Yearbook will present an in-depth analysis on various human rights themes. This edition is dedicated to the state of implementation of Italy\u2019s Special Action Plan against Sexual and Gender-based Violence 2015.The Italian Agenda of Human Rights 2018 represents an updated orienta-tion tool with regards to the main initiatives to be undertaken on the leg-islative, infrastructural and policy-making fronts in order to strengthen the Italian system for promoting and protecting human rights

Large chorioangioma of placenta with a fair fetal outcome

Chorioangioma is the most common tumor of placenta. Usually it is small in size, less than 4 cm in diameter, asymptomatic and so is only accidentally diagnosed during routine ultrasound or after careful histologic examination. It is a benign, non-trophoblastic vascular tumor coming from the primitive chorionic mesenchyme whose etiology and pathophysiology is still unknown. Its prevalence is about 1% of all pregnancies. In larger tumor, various and significant both maternal and fetal complications are reported
