The PASTEL catalogue of stellar parameters
The PASTEL catalogue is an update of the [Fe/H] catalogue, published in 1997
and 2001. It is a bibliographical compilation of stellar atmospheric parameters
providing (Teff,logg,[Fe/H]) determinations obtained from the analysis of high
resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra, carried out with model atmospheres.
PASTEL also provides determinations of the one parameter Teff based on various
methods. It is aimed in the future to provide also homogenized atmospheric
parameters and elemental abundances, radial and rotational velocities. A web
interface has been created to query the catalogue on elaborated criteria.
PASTEL is also distributed through the CDS database and VizieR. To make it as
complete as possible, the main journals have been surveyed, as well as the CDS
database, to find relevant publications. The catalogue is regularly updated
with new determinations found in the literature. As of Febuary 2010, PASTEL
includes 30151 determinations of either Teff or (Teff,logg,[Fe/H]) for 16649
different stars corresponding to 865 bibliographical references. Nearly 6000
stars have a determination of the three parameters (Teff,logg,[Fe/H]) with a

What breeding strategy(ies) should be carry up for organic winter wheat? Results and prospects from a long-term comparison with low input variety trials
Breeding varieties adapted to various organic farming conditions is one solution, among others, to increase yields and improve organic winter bread wheat quality. From 2004 to 2011, INRA winter wheat breeders have conducted variety trials in three contrasting agro-climatic regions across north-west France to test the relative response of 25 to 30 diversified genotypes when cultivated in low input (FI) and organic (AB) conditions. The comparison of 17 paired management trials showed the relevance of low input conditions to identify genotypes adapted to organic farming conditions for yield and protein content. Such a selection environment is useful also to screen “GPD+” (positive Grain Protein Deviation) genotypes with better nutrient use efficiency. In contrast, our results highlighted the need to evaluate genotypes baking quality in organic conditions in which bread making ability is frequently lost
Multicolour CCD Measurements of Visual Double and Multiple Stars. III
Recent CCD observations were performed in the period 1998-2004 for a large
sample of visual double and multiple stars selected from the Hipparcos
Catalogue and/or from the Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars. Accurate
astrometric and photometric data allowing to characterize the individual
components are provided. These data are confronted to Hipparcos data or to data
from an older epoch in order to assess the nature of the observed systems. We
simultaneously apply a Moffat-Lorentz profile with a similar shape to all
detected components and adjust the profile parameters from which we obtain the
relative astrometric position (epoch, position angle, angular separation) as
well as differential multi-colour photometry (filters (B)VRI). We thus acquired
recent data for 71 visual systems of which 6 are orbital binaries, 27 are
nearby and 30 are multiple systems. In three cases, the systems remained
unresolved. 23 new components were detected and measured. Two new visual double
stars of intermediate separation were also found. The estimated accuracies in
relative position are 0.04 deg and 0.01" respectively, while those in
differential photometry are of the order of 0.01-0.02 mag in general. The
nature of the association of 55 systems is evaluated. New basic binary
properties are derived for 20 bound systems. Component colours and masses are

Kinematic parameters and membership probabilities of open clusters in the Bordeaux PM2000 catalogue
We derive lists of proper-motions and kinematic membership probabilities for
49 open clusters and possible open clusters in the zone of the Bordeaux PM2000
proper motion catalogue (). We test
different parametrisations of the proper motion and position distribution
functions and select the most successful one. In the light of those results, we
analyse some objects individually. The segregation between cluster and field
member stars, and the assignment of membership probabilities, is accomplished
by applying a new and fully automated method based on both parametrisations of
the proper motion and position distribution functions, and genetic algorithm
optimization heuristics associated with a derivative-based hill climbing
algorithm for the likelihood optimization. We present a catalogue comprising
kinematic parameters and associated membership probability lists for 49 open
clusters and possible open clusters in the Bordeaux PM2000 catalogue region. We
note that this is the first determination of proper motions for five open
clusters. We confirm the non-existence of two kinematic populations in the

Xq27 FRAXA locus is a strong candidate for dyslexia: evidence from a genome-wide scan in French families.
Dyslexia is a frequent neurodevelopmental
learning disorder. To date, nine susceptibility loci have
been identified, one of them being DYX9, located in Xq27.
We performed the first French SNP linkage study followed
by candidate gene investigation in dyslexia by studying 12
multiplex families (58 subjects) with at least two children
affected, according to categorical restrictive criteria for
phenotype definition. Significant results emerged on
Xq27.3 within DYX9. The maximum multipoint LOD
score reached 3,884 between rs12558359 and rs454992.
Within this region, seven candidate genes were investigated
for mutations in exonic sequences (CXORF1,
CXORF51, SLITRK2, FMR1, FMR2, ASFMR1, FMR1NB),
all having a role during brain development. We further
looked for 50
UTR trinucleotide repeats in FMR1 and FMR2
genes. No mutation or polymorphism co-segregating with
dyslexia was found. This finding in French families with
Dyslexia showed significant linkage on Xq27.3 enclosing
FRAXA, and consequently confirmed the DYX9 region as
a robust susceptibility locus. We reduced the previously
described interval from 6.8 (DXS1227–DXS8091) to 4 Mb
also disclosing a higher LOD score
Multiwavelength Observations of 1ES 1959+650, One Year After the Strong Outburst of 2002
In April-May 2003, the blazar 1ES 1959+650 showed an increased level of X-ray
activity. This prompted a multiwavelength observation campaign with the Whipple
10 m gamma-ray telescope, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, the Bordeaux Optical
Observatory, and the University of Michigan Radio Astrophysical Observatory. We
present the multiwavelength data taken from May 2, 2003 to June 7, 2003 and
compare the source characteristics with those measured during observations
taken during the years 2000 and 2002. The X-ray observations gave a data set
with high signal-to-noise light curves and energy spectra; however, the
gamma-ray observations did not reveal a major TeV gamma-ray flare. Furthermore,
we find that the radio and optical fluxes do not show statistically significant
deviations from those measured during the 2002 flaring periods. While the X-ray
flux and X-ray photon index appear correlated during subsequent observations,
the apparent correlation evolved significantly between the years 2000, 2002,
and 2003. We discuss the implications of this finding for the mechanism that

The correlated optical and radio variability of BL Lacertae. WEBT data analysis 1994-2005
Since 1997, BL Lacertae has undergone a phase of high optical activity, with
the occurrence of several prominent outbursts. Starting from 1999, the Whole
Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) consortium has organized various multifrequency
campaigns on this blazar, collecting tens of thousands of data points. One of
the main issues in the study of this huge dataset has been the search for
correlations between the optical and radio flux variations, and for possible
periodicities in the light curves. The analysis of the data assembled during
the first four campaigns (comprising also archival data to cover the period
1968-2003) revealed a fair optical-radio correlation in 1994-2003, with a delay
of the hard radio events of ~100 days. Moreover, various statistical methods
suggested the existence of a radio periodicity of ~8 years. In 2004 the WEBT
started a new campaign to extend the dataset to the most recent observing
seasons, in order to possibly confirm and better understand the previous
results. In this campaign we have collected and assembled about 11000 new
optical observations from twenty telescopes, plus near-IR and radio data at
various frequencies. Here, we perform a correlation analysis on the long-term
R-band and radio light curves. In general, we confirm the ~100-day delay of the
hard radio events with respect to the optical ones, even if longer (~200-300
days) time lags are also found in particular periods. The radio
quasi-periodicity is confirmed too, but the "period" seems to progressively
lengthen from 7.4 to 9.3 years in the last three cycles. The optical and radio
behaviour in the last forty years suggests a scenario where geometric effects
play a major role. In particular, the alternation of enhanced and suppressed
optical activity (accompanied by hard and soft radio events, respectively) canComment: 6 pages, 4 figure
WEBT and XMM-Newton observations of 3C 454.3 during the post-outburst phase. Detection of the little and big blue bumps
The blazar 3C 454.3 underwent an unprecedented optical outburst in spring
2005. This was first followed by a mm and then by a cm radio outburst, which
peaked in February 2006. We report on follow-up observations by the WEBT to
study the multiwavelength emission in the post-outburst phase. XMM-Newton
observations on July and December 2006 added information on the X-ray and UV
fluxes. The source was in a faint state. The radio flux at the higher
frequencies showed a fast decreasing trend, which represents the tail of the
big radio outburst. It was followed by a quiescent state, common at all radio
frequencies. In contrast, moderate activity characterized the NIR and optical
light curves, with a progressive increase of the variability amplitude with
increasing wavelength. We ascribe this redder-when-brighter behaviour to the
presence of a "little blue bump" due to line emission from the broad line
region, which is clearly visible in the source SED during faint states.
Moreover, the data from the XMM-Newton OM reveal a rise of the SED in the UV,
suggesting the existence of a "big blue bump" due to thermal emission from the
accretion disc. The X-ray spectra are well fitted with a power-law model with
photoelectric absorption, possibly larger than the Galactic one. However, the
comparison with previous X-ray observations would imply that the amount of
absorbing matter is variable. Alternatively, the intrinsic X-ray spectrum
presents a curvature, which may depend on the X-ray brightness. In this case,

A new activity phase of the blazar 3C 454.3. Multifrequency observations by the WEBT and XMM-Newton in 2007-2008
We present and analyse the WEBT multifrequency observations of 3C 454.3 in
the 2007-2008 observing season, including XMM-Newton observations and near-IR
spectroscopic monitoring, and compare the recent emission behaviour with the
past one. In the optical band we observed a multi-peak outburst in July-August
2007, and other faster events in November 2007 - February 2008. During these
outburst phases, several episodes of intranight variability were detected. A mm
outburst was observed starting from mid 2007, whose rising phase was
contemporaneous to the optical brightening. A slower flux increase also
affected the higher radio frequencies, the flux enhancement disappearing below
8 GHz. The analysis of the optical-radio correlation and time delays, as well
as the behaviour of the mm light curve, confirm our previous predictions,
suggesting that changes in the jet orientation likely occurred in the last few
years. The historical multiwavelength behaviour indicates that a significant
variation in the viewing angle may have happened around year 2000. Colour
analysis reveals a complex spectral behaviour, which is due to the interplay of
different emission components. All the near-IR spectra show a prominent Halpha
emission line, whose flux appears nearly constant. The analysis of the
XMM-Newton data indicates a correlation between the UV excess and the
soft-X-ray excess, which may represent the head and the tail of the big blue
bump, respectively. The X-ray flux correlates with the optical flux, suggesting
that in the inverse-Compton process either the seed photons are synchrotron
photons at IR-optical frequencies or the relativistic electrons are those that
produce the optical synchrotron emission. The X-ray radiation would thus be

WEBT multiwavelength monitoring and XMM-Newton observations of BL Lacertae in 2007-2008. Unveiling different emission components
In 2007-2008 we carried out a new multiwavelength campaign of the Whole Earth
Blazar Telescope (WEBT) on BL Lacertae, involving three pointings by the
XMM-Newton satellite, to study its emission properties. The source was
monitored in the optical-to-radio bands by 37 telescopes. The brightness level
was relatively low. Some episodes of very fast variability were detected in the
optical bands. The X-ray spectra are well fitted by a power law with photon
index of about 2 and photoelectric absorption exceeding the Galactic value.
However, when taking into account the presence of a molecular cloud on the line
of sight, the data are best fitted by a double power law, implying a concave
X-ray spectrum. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) built with
simultaneous radio-to-X-ray data at the epochs of the XMM-Newton observations
suggest that the peak of the synchrotron emission lies in the near-IR band, and
show a prominent UV excess, besides a slight soft-X-ray excess. A comparison
with the SEDs corresponding to previous observations with X-ray satellites
shows that the X-ray spectrum is extremely variable. We ascribe the UV excess
to thermal emission from the accretion disc, and the other broad-band spectral
features to the presence of two synchrotron components, with their related SSC
emission. We fit the thermal emission with a black body law and the non-thermal
components by means of a helical jet model. The fit indicates a disc
temperature greater than 20000 K and a luminosity greater than 6 x 10^44 erg/s.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&
