Explaining ATLAS and CMS Results Within the Reduced Minimal 3-3-1 model

Recently the ATLAS and CMS collaborations announced the discovery of a higgs particle with a mass of 125\sim 125 GeV. The results are mildly consistent with the Standard Model Higgs boson. However, the combined data from these collaborations seem to point to an excess in the hγγh \rightarrow \gamma \gamma channel. In this work we analyze under which conditions this excess may be plausibly explained within the reduced minimal 3-3-1 model, while being consistent with bb, WW, ZZ and τ+τ\tau^+\tau^- channels. Moreover, we derive the properties of the heavy neutral and the doubly charged scalars predicted by the model. We then conclude that at a scale of a few TeV, this model provides a good fit to the ATLAS and CMS signal strength measurements, and therefore stands as an appealing alternative to the standard model.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures. Combining type I and type II seesaw mechanisms in the minimal 3-3-1 model

The minimal 3-3-1 model is perturbative until energies around 4-5TeV, posing a challenge to generate neutrino masses at eV scale, mainly if one aims to take advantage of the seesaw mechanism. As a means to circumvent this problem we propose a modification of the model such that it accommodates the type I and type II seesaw mechanisms altogether. We show that the conjunction of both mechanisms yield a neutrino mass expression suppressed by a high power of the cutoff scale, M5M^5, in its denominator. With such a suppression term we naturally obtain neutrino masses at eV scale when MM is around few TeV. We also investigate the size of lepton flavor violation through the process μeγ\mu \rightarrow e\gamma.Comment: about 15 pages, no figure

UID/EQU/00511/2019 "LEPABE-2-ECOINNOVATION"-NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000005.Similar to oil, biological origin feedstock can be converted into a number of products allowing to recover the maximum value from the raw biological material, within what is nowadays called a biorefinery. Among other biological materials, microalgae are a very interesting biomass due to the high economic value of certain cellular components, such as carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this project, a genetically modified cyanobacteria, that produces ethanol as an extracellular product, was used as the basis of this study. In order to assess the optimal configuration of the biorefinery, different scenarios were designed, each one with different sequences of unit operations, equipment and products. With the design stage completed, an economic analysis was performed to choose the 2 scenarios with the best economic performance.publishersversionpublishe

Reducing Volume to Increase Capacity—Measures to Reduce Transport Energy for Recyclable Waste Collection

    Get PDF
The production of municipal waste is increasing all over the world. Although a significant part of the waste is collected as commingled waste, much of it is recyclable if disposed of properly. Thus, separate deposition and collection plays an extremely important role today, more than ever, not only in terms of preventing pollution but also from the point of view of recycling as a driver of circular economy and of efficient use of resources. This work is focused on the development of compaction equipment to be applied to containers, which allows a more efficient approach to the process of collecting waste for recycling. As a management option, recycling depends on collective behavior which is based on individual acts. Therefore, individual use of plastic/metal compaction systems can help meet recycling targets, even as a complement to conventional bins. Thus, herein a proposal is presented for a plastic/metal collection station with a built-in compaction element that allows for the compacting of the separated waste, individually, in an easily accessible drawer. Sorting and compacting waste before collection will result in a reduction of the number of collection/transport stops, which will also translate into higher energy efficiency, cost savings, optimization of the transported tons/km ratio, and profitability. This work was financially supported by Base Funding–UIDB/50022/2020 (LAETA) of INEGI–Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Portugal, and UIDB/04730/2020 of CIETI–Center for Innovation in Industrial Engineering and Technology, LA/P/0045/2020 (ALiCE), UIDB/00511/2020 and UIDP/00511/2020 (LEPABE), funded by national funds through the FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC), Portugal.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

We aim at reflecting on the dialectics between country and city as ways through  which human groups organize themselves and as indexes of the history and literature of Brazil  and Mozambique, countries inserted in a specific linguistic system, so as to investigate the  cultural resemblances and differences between them. For this purpose, this paper will analyze  comparatively the following short stories: "A enxada", written by the Brazilian author Bernardo  Elis, and “A avó, a cidade e o semáforo”, by the Mozambican author Mia Couto. Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping platforms have been widely used in studies in diverse areas, ranging from population genetics to applied genetic improvement and breeding. SNP genotyping data generated with these platforms can also be used for detecting and genotyping copy number variations (CNVs). CNVs are defined as a variable copy numbers of DNA segments ranging from 50bp to several megabases (Mbp), in comparison with a reference genome. Several studies have identified an abundance of CNVs in human and domestic animal genomes, where it has been shown that they are involved in phenotypic variability. This initial study reports a high resolution map of CNVs in Nelore beef cattle generated with the PennCNV software. CNVs were called in a dataset from 1709 animals of the Nelore breed genotyped with Illumina BovineHD BeadChip for a total of 735,242 markers. After non-restrictive quality filtering, a total of 246,290 CNVs were identified on autosomal chromosomes, representing 219,997 and 26,293 gain and loss events, respectively. CNVs lengths ranged from 20.02 Kb to 8.37 Mb with an average of 352 Kb and a median of 204.5 Kb. The number of SNPs in each detected CNV varied from 20 to 2,116 with an average of 104 and a median of 63. A total of 138,066 CNVs were present in regions with annotated genes.P553

SNP genotyping with High Density (HD) chips offers a relative low cost when compared to genotyping by re- sequencing using Next Generation Sequencing technologies, which is a significant advantage when a large number of individuals are under study. Currently, there are commercial HD chips for several economically important species, for very reasonable prices per sample
