    Capacity bounds and estimates for the finite scatterers MIMO wireless channel

    We consider the limits to the capacity of the multiple-input–multiple-output wireless channel as modeled by the finite scatterers channel model, a generic model of the multipath channel which accounts for each individual multipath component. We assume a normalization that allows for the array gain due to multiple receive antenna elements and, hence, can obtain meaningful limits as the number of elements tends to infinity. We show that the capacity is upper bounded by the capacity of an identity channel of dimension equal to the number of scatterers. Because this bound is not very tight, we also determine an estimate of the capacity as the number of transmit/receive elements tends to infinity which is asymptotically accurate

    Post-operative rehabilitation after PIP joint arthroplasty with early active motion: A retrospective review of outcomes

    We present a retrospectively review of outcomes of the first fifteen patients who underwent proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint arthroplasty and were treated using the same early active motion rehabilitation regime introduced by the therapy department at Mount Vernon Hospital. The regime utilises early motion of the PIP joint while protecting the arthroplasty with a small static splint and digit strapping to reduce lateral forces on the joint. The notes of fifteen patients were reviewed and their outcomes presented. To evaluate the outcomes in more detail the patients were divided into three groups according to their diagnostic reason for the procedure (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and trauma). The overall mean arc of motion at the PIP joint on discharge from therapy was 54 improved from 28 pre operatively. The patients with the osteoarthritic PIP joints gained the largest improvement in the PIP joint arc of motion and required the least rehabilitation intervention. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis required intense rehabilitation to gain less overall PIP joint motion but still reported satisfaction with their outcome. All 15 patients experienced an improvement in their pain level and subjectively reported increased function in their affected hand. Following this retrospective review of cases the team continue to use this regime for metal and silastic prosthesis but now routinely provide additional written information pre operatively to assist patients’ understanding of the procedure and the extent of the rehabilitation required

    One major assumption in all orthogonal space-time block coding (O-STBC) schemes is that the channel remains static over the entire length of the codeword. However, time selective fading channels do exist, and in such case the conventional O-STBC detectors can suffer from a large error floor in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) cases. This paper addresses such an issue by introducing a parallel interference cancellation (PIC) based detector for the G(i) coded systems (i = 3 and 4)

    Resolving the structure of TiBe12_{12}

    There has been considerable controversy regarding the structure of TiBe12_{12}, which is variously reported as hexagonal and tetragonal. Lattice dynamics simulations based on density functional theory show the tetragonal phase space group I4/mmmI4/mmm to be more stable over all temperatures, while the hexagonal phase exhibits an imaginary phonon mode, which, if followed, would lead to the cell adopting the tetragonal structure. We then report the predicted ground state elastic constants and temperature dependence of the bulk modulus and thermal expansion for the tetragonal phase.Comment: In press at Acta Crystallographica B.     Crystal structure, thermodynamics, magnetics and disorder properties of Be-Fe-Al intermetallics

    The elastic and magnetic properties, thermodynamical stability, deviation from stoichiometry and order/disorder transformations of phases that are relevant to Be alloys were investigated using density functional theory simulations coupled with phonon density of states calculations to capture temperature effects. A novel structure and composition were identified for the Be-Fe binary {\epsilon} phase. In absence of Al, FeBe_5 is predicted to form at equilibrium above ~ 1250 K, while the {\epsilon} phase is stable only below ~ 1650 K, and FeBe_2 is stable at all temperatures below melting. Small additions of Al are found to stabilise FeBe_5 over FeBe_2 and {\epsilon}, while at high Al content, AlFeBe_4 is predicted to form. Deviations from stoichiometric compositions are also considered and found to be important in the case of FeBe_5 and {\epsilon}. The propensity for disordered vs ordered structures is also important for AlFeBe_4 (which exhibits complete Al-Fe disordered at all temperatures) and FeBe_5 (which exhibits an order-disorder transition at ~ 950 K).Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in J.
