    Estimation of fiber diameters in the spinal dorsal columns from clinical data

    Lack of human morphometric data regarding the largest nerve fibers in the dorsal columns (DCs) of the spinal cord has lead to the estimation of the diameters of these fibers from clinical data retrieved from patients with a new spinal cord stimulation (SCS) system. These patients indicated the perception threshold of stimulation induced paresthesia in various body segments, while the stimulation amplitude was increased. The fiber diameters were calculated with a computer model, developed to calculate the effects of SCS on spinal nerve fibers. This computer model consists of two parts: (1) a three-dimensional (3-D) volume conductor model of a spinal cord segment in which the potential distribution due to electrical stimulation is calculated and (2) an electrical equivalent cable model of myelinated nerve fiber, which uses the calculated potential field to determine the threshold stimulus needed for activation. It is shown that the largest fibers in the medial DCs are significantly smaller than the largest fibers in the lateral parts. This finding is in accordance with the fiber distribution in cat, derived from the corresponding propagation velocities. Moreover, it is shown that the mediolateral increase in fiber diameter is mainly confined to the lateral parts of the DCs.     Bayesian clustering of multiple zero-inflated outcomes

    Several applications involving counts present a large proportion of zeros (excess-of-zeros data). A popular model for such data is the hurdle model, which explicitly models the probability of a zero count, while assuming a sampling distribution on the positive integers. We consider data from multiple count processes. In this context, it is of interest to study the patterns of counts and cluster the subjects accordingly. We introduce a novel Bayesian approach to cluster multiple, possibly related, zero-inflated processes. We propose a joint model for zero-inflated counts, specifying a hurdle model for each process with a shifted Negative Binomial sampling distribution. Conditionally on the model parameters, the different processes are assumed independent, leading to a substantial reduction in the number of parameters as compared with traditional multivariate approaches. The subject-specific probabilities of zero-inflation and the parameters of the sampling distribution are flexibly modelled via an enriched finite mixture with random number of components. This induces a two-level clustering of the subjects based on the zero/non-zero patterns (outer clustering) and on the sampling distribution (inner clustering). Posterior inference is performed through tailored Markov chain Monte Carlo schemes.     Alcohol production from cheese whey permeate using genetically modified flocculent yeast cells

    Alcoholic fermentation of cheese whey permeate was investigated using a recombinant flocculating Saccharomyces cerevisiae, expressing the LAC4 (coding for β-galactosidase) and LAC12 (coding for lactose permease) genes of Kluyveromyces marxianus enabling for lactose metabolization. Data on yeast fermentation and growth on cheese whey permeate from a Portuguese dairy industry is presented. For cheese whey permeate having a lactose concentration of 50 gLˉ¹, total lactose consumption was observed with a conversion yield of ethanol close to the expected theoretical value. Using a continuously operating 5.5-L bioreactor, ethanol productivity near 10 g Lˉ¹ hˉ¹ (corresponding to 0.45 hˉ¹ dilution rate) was obtained, which raises new perspectives for the economic feasibility of whey alcoholic fermentation.     Key actors leading knowledge brokerage for sustainable school improvement with PLCs:Who brokers what?

    This study investigated knowledge brokerage key actors, in schools that realized sustainable school improvement through professional learning communities (PLCs). To gain insight into what knowledge key actors brokered and how they brokered knowledge, key actors at five secondary schools that worked sustainably with PLCs participated in an in-depth mixed-method study. The findings showed what types of knowledge were brokered and through what activities, what characteristics of key actors were important for knowledge brokerage, and how key actors fit different profiles. These insights can help schools improve their knowledge brokerage as they work towards sustainable school improvement

    Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Amine-Boranes using Geminal Phosphino-Boranes

    The reaction of the intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) tBu2PCH2BPh2 with the amine-boranes NH3·BH3 and Me2NH·BH3 leads to the formation of the corresponding FLP-H2 adducts as well as novel five-membered heterocycles that result from capturing the in situ formed amino-borane by a second equivalent of FLP. The sterically more demanding tBu2PCH2BMes2 does not form such a five-membered heterocycle when reacted with Me2NH·BH3 and its H2 adduct liberates dihydrogen at elevated temperatures, promoting the metal-free catalytic dehydrogenation of amine-boranes.Peer reviewe
