Deterioro cognitivo en la esclerosis mĂșltiple

Amongst the varied symptomology of multiple sclerosis is to be fo und the alteration of higher functions (cognitive deficit), which has considerable repercussions on the quality of life of patients. The old descriptions of the disease rarely differentiate cognitive affectation from the more general category of “mental symptoms”, which also includes a broad range of affective disorders. Towards 1960 neuropsychological tests began to be employed, and it was from the 1970s onwards that a clear distinction was drawn between deterioration of the higher functions and psycho-affective aspects in the disease. The pattern of cognitive deterioration in patients with multiple sclerosis is not uniform. During the initial phases of the disease it is, in general, light and it has an insidious start, although inter-individual variability is wide, depending on the predominant pathological alterations in the lesions and on their number and localisation. In more severe cases, it is possible to include within the debatable term of subcortical dementia, intellectual slowness, problems of attention, alterations in abstract reasoning, shortcomings in the resolution of problems and memory dysfunction. It is an almost invariable complication of the advanced stages of the disease, since the lesions characterised by axonal loss affect broad areas of white matter, which determines the deafferentation of several areas of cortical association. There does not appear to be any correlation between cognitive deterioration and the variables of the disease considered in an independent way, such as demographic data, clinical course, alterations of mood, consumption of medicines or fatigue. Although, evidently, the disease’s progressive secondary forms of greater duration and the accumulation of lesions are what present the greatest deterioration. With present-day techniques of neuroimaging it has been possible to show a correlation between cognitive deterioration and the existence of an increase in ventricular size, periventricular lesions and atrophy of the callous body

Status of the LHC Short Dipole Model Programme

    Get PDF
The 1-m model program for the main LHC dipoles is now mainly focussed on double-aperture magnets. In the past years an intensive program based on single-aperture dipoles allowed to select the series-design features among several variants for the coil cross section, the material of the collars and of the coil end spacers, the coil pre-stress and the cable insulation. The recent double-aperture models are dedicated to the fine-tuning of the baseline design and the manufacture of the coil ends. This paper reports about the fabrication and testing of these magnets and the results relevant for the series production of the 15-m long full-size dipole cold masses

A Probabilistic Model and Capturing Device for Remote Simultaneous Estimation of Spectral Emissivity and Temperature of Hot Emissive Materials

    Get PDF
Estimating the temperature of hot emissive samples (e.g. liquid slag) in the context of harsh industrial environments such as steelmaking plants is a crucial yet challenging task, which is typically addressed by means of methods that require physical contact. Current remote methods require information on the emissivity of the sample. However, the spectral emissivity is dependent on the sample composition and temperature itself, and it is hardly measurable unless under controlled laboratory procedures. In this work, we present a portable device and associated probabilistic model that can simultaneously produce quasi real-time estimates for temperature and spectral emissivity of hot samples in the [0.2, 12.0ÎŒm ] range at distances of up to 20m . The model is robust against variable atmospheric conditions, and the device is presented together with a quick calibration procedure that allows for in field deployment in rough industrial environments, thus enabling in line measurements. We validate the temperature and emissivity estimates by our device against laboratory equipment under controlled conditions in the [550, 850∘C ] temperature range for two solid samples with well characterized spectral emissivity’s: alumina ( α−Al2O3 ) and hexagonal boron nitride ( h−BN ). The analysis of the results yields Root Mean Squared Errors of 32.3∘C and 5.7∘C respectively, and well correlated spectral emissivity’s.This work was supported in part by the Basque Government (Hazitek AURRERA B: Advanced and Useful REdesign of CSP process for new steel gRAdes) under Grant ZE-2017/00009

Performance evaluation of an ORC unit integrated to a waste heat recovery system in a steel mill

Waste heat revalorization creates interesting opportunities to energy intensive industries. In the present project, a large-scale ORC pilot plant along with a waste heat recovery unit (WHRU) in a steel mill has been designed, commissioned and operated. The plant is part of the European Commission funded PITAGORAS project and it has been installed at ORI MARTIN in Brescia (Italy). Waste heat is recovered from the fumes of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) to produce saturated steam which is then delivered to a district heating (DH) network during heating season and to the ORC for electricity generation during the rest of the year. The main challenge was the integration of these systems in a single plant since the heat source is highly unstable and steady heat load is preferable for the DH and ORC for their safe operation. A steam accumulator of 150m3 volume was implemented between the WHRU and the ORC/DH systems to maintain a steady discharge pressure, to reduce the fast transients and to extend the supply over longer periods. The ORC has a nominal power output of 1,8MW and the preliminary results of the first weeks of operation of the ORC unit resulted in a net efficiency of 21.7%. Currently the plant is undergoing monitoring campaign which will provide additional data to further evaluate and optimize the system. The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013 under grant agreement n° ENER / FP7EN / 314596 / PITAGORAS

A Semantic web page linguistic annotation model

Although with the Semantic Web initiative much research on web page semantic annotation has already been done by AI researchers, linguistic text annotation, including the semantic one, was originally developed in Corpus Linguistics and its results have been somehow neglected by AI. The purpose of the research presented in this proposal is to prove that integration of results in both fields is not only possible, but also highly useful in order to make Semantic Web pages more machine-readable. A multi-level (possibly multi-purpose and multi-language) annotation model based on EAGLES standards and Ontological Semantics, implemented with last generation Semantic Web languages is being developed to fit the needs of both communities

A female patient, 22 years oíd, showing characteristic sclerotic bone images on radiographic examinations is reported. The main locations were on the distal limbs and pelvis. She has also elastic nevi as freckles in the skin. This entity was not stablished as inhered process. The differential diagnosis lies between sclerotic metastasis, neurofibromatosis (Von Recklinghausen), Bourneville disease and other displastyc lesions

Channeler Ant Model: 3D segmentation of medical images through ant colonies

    Get PDF
In this paper the Channeler Ant Model (CAM) and some results of its applications to the analysis of medical images are described. The CAM is an algorithm able to segment 3D structures with different shapes, intensity and background. It makes use of virtual ant colonies and exploits their natural capabilities to modify the environment and communicate with each other by pheromone deposition. Its performance has been validated with the segmentation of 3D artificial objects and it has been already used successfully in lung nodules detection on Computer Tomography images. This work tries to evaluate the CAM as a candidate to solve the quantitative segmentation problem in Magnetic Resonance brain images: to evaluate the percentage of white matter, gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid in each voxel
