Background The DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) provides the opportunity to integrate the needed developmental perspective in the assessment of personality pathology. Based on this model, Krueger and colleagues (2012) developed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5), which operationalizes the proposed DSM-5 traits. Methods Eighty-five consecutively admitted Italian adolescent inpatients were administered the Italian translation of the PID-5, in order to obtain preliminary data on PID-5 reliability and clinical usefulness in clinically referred adolescents. Results With the possible exception of the PID-5 Suspiciousness scale, all other PID-5 scales evidenced adequate internal consistency reliability (i.e., Cronbach's α values of at least .70, most being greater than .80). Our data seemed to yield at least partial support for the construct validity of the PID-5 scales also in clinical adolescents, at least in terms of patterns of associations with dimensionally assessed DSM-5 Section II PDs that were also included in the DSM-5 AMPD (excluding Antisocial PD because of the participants' minor age). Finally, our data suggested that the clinical usefulness of the PID-5 in adolescent inpatients may extend beyond PDs to profiling adolescents at risk for life-threatening suicide attempts. In particular, PID-5 Depressivity, Anhedonia, and Submissiveness trait scales were significantly associated with adolescents' history of life-threatening suicide attempts, even after controlling for a number of other variables, including mood disorder diagnosis. Discussion As a whole, our study may provide interesting, albeit preliminary data as to the clinical usefulness of PID-5 in the assessment of adolescent inpatients

Long-term changes in the structure of a polychaete community on artificial habitats

A mediterranean polychaete community was studied for 10 years since the first settlement to examine community dynamics and to compare it with the model proposed by Hughes (1984) for benthic invertebrates. Cluster analysis (Q-mode) pointed out the presence of four main periods during the colonization process in agreement with edaphic changes produced by the colonization and disappearance of mussels. During this time the pattern of species abundance changed from a log series distribution (with few dominant species) towards a truncated log normal distribution (with many rare species) characteristic of a more complex community structure

Colonization and disappearance of Mytilus galloprovincialis Lam. on an artificial habitat in the Mediterranean Sea

A Mytilus galloprovincialis population, settled on a new artificial habitat at 12 m depth in the Central Tyrrhenian Sea, was investigated for 10 years. The new substratum, located at a depth lower than the preferential range of the species, was colonized temporarily by mussels which reached very high densities and dominated the benthic community from their colonization until the third year. The length-frequency distribution analysis showed a progressively complex population structure with up to three cohorts. The yearly recruitments were observed once a year in spring. The growth curve provided a maximum length higher than that reported for shallow waters. Nevertheless, the gregarious habits of mussels and the reduced water movement caused edaphic modifications of the substratum, which was covered progressively by sediments and biodeposits (pseudofaeces). Consequently, the population structure was affected by a reduction of the newly recruited cohorts, and mussels disappeared after 5 years of colonization. This may be explained by the reduction in the substratum available for the first settlement (hydroid covering), as well as by the modification of the surface required for final settlement. Impact of mapping errors on the reliability of landslide hazard maps

International audienceIdentification and mapping of landslide deposits are an intrinsically difficult and subjective operation that requires a great effort to minimise the inherent uncertainty. For the Staffora Basin, which extends for almost 300 km2 in the northern Apennines, three landslide inventory maps were independently produced by three groups of geomorphologists. In comparing each map with the others, large positional discrepancies arise (in the range of 55?65%). When all three maps are overlain, the locational mismatch of landslide deposit polygons increases to over 80%. To assess the impact of these errors on predictive models of landslide hazard, for the study area discriminant models were built up from the same set of geological-geomorphological factors as predictors, and the occurrence of landslide deposits within each terrain-unit, derived from each inventory map, as dependent variable. The comparison of these models demonstrates that statistical modelling greatly minimises the impact of input data errors which remain, however, a major limitation on the reliability of landslide hazard maps

Hypermentalizing as a marker of borderline personality disorder in Italian adolescents: A cross-cultural replication of Sharp and colleagues' (2011) findings

Background: Extant literature indicates that Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may be reliably assessed in adolescence. Sharp and colleagues' (2011) suggested that mentalization could be an important early target for intervention in BPD adolescents and showed that hypermentalizing may represent an important marker to distinguish emerging BPD from adolescent turmoil. We aimed at testing if both dimensionally-assessed and categorically-diagnosed BPD was selectively associated with hypermentalizing errors on the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC) task in Italian adolescent inpatients and community adolescents. Findings: The sample was composed of 58 Italian adolescents who were consecutively admitted to an adolescent psychiatry unit in Rome, Italy. BPD was assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Personality Disorders (SCID-5-PD); the MASC task was used to assess mentalizing. Findings supported the hypothesis of a specific link between BPD features and hypermentalizing in adolescent inpatients. Both dimensionally-assessed and categorically-assessed BPD showed significant and non-negligible associations with hypermentalizing. The overall performance on the MASC task significantly discriminated BPD adolescents from Italian community-dwelling adolescents. Conclusions: Our findings supported the hypothesis that specific deficits in mentalization-namely, hypermentalizing-may play a crucial role in the developmental pathway leading to emerging BPD in adolescence

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of WOx-decorated ZnO photocatalysts for NOx abatement

Heterojunctions based on ZnO have numerous applications, such as water splitting, sensing and energy storage [1]. Recently, ZnO/WO3 composites have shown promising results in the sonocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation of aqueous and gas pollutants [2]. Several synthetic approaches have been reported, including chemical vapor deposition, magnetron sputtering, hydrothermal methods and high temperature annealing. Ultrasound-assisted synthesis can provide a scalable and cost-effective strategy to tailor the catalyst structural and morphological properties [3]. In the present work, pristine ZnO and ZnO/WOx composites were synthesized via a sonochemical method, studying the role of the ultrasound amplitude and mode (continuous/pulsed), metal precursor, WOx content and post-synthetic annealing. The resulting materials were extensively characterized, investigating their structural, morphological, optical, and surface properties. Samples were tested towards the photocatalytic removal of NOx under both UV and visible light irradiation in a batch reactor. A good degree of crystallinity is appreciable even before calcination and better morphological features are observed with respect to reference samples prepared without ultrasounds. The morphological properties can be further tuned by changing the metal precursor and adding a post-synthetic annealing step. Photocatalytic activity is promoted with respect to both benchmark samples (Figure 1)
