Fluctuation-Dissipation theorems and entropy production in relaxational systems
We show that for stochastic dynamical systems out of equilibrium the
violation of the fluctuation-dissipation equality is bounded by a function of
the entropy production. The result applies to a much wider situation than `near
equilibrium', comprising diffusion as well as glasses and other macroscopic
systems far from equilibrium. For aging systems this bounds the age-frequency
regimes in which the susceptibilities satisfy FDT in terms of the rate of decay
of the H-function, a question intimately related to the reading of a
thermometer placed in contact with the system.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex; formula and reference added plus various minor

On the reliability of a simple method for scoring phenotypes to estimate heritability: A case study with pupal color in Heliconius erato phyllis, Fabricius 1775 (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae)
In this paper, two methods for assessing the degree of melanization of pupal exuviae from the butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis, Fabricius 1775 (Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae, Heliconiini) are compared. In the first method, which was qualitative, the exuviae were classified by scoring the degree of melanization, whereas in the second method, which was quantitative, the exuviae were classified by optical density followed by analysis with appropriate software. The heritability (h2) of the degree of melanization was estimated by regression and analysis of variance. The estimates of h 2 were similar with both methods, indicating that the qualitative method could be particularly suitable for field work. The low estimates obtained for heritability may have resulted from the small sample size (n = 7-18 broods, including the parents) or from the allocation-priority hypothesis in which pupal color would be a lower priority trait compared to morphological traits and adequate larval development
Effects of N-acetylcysteine on amphetamine-induced sensitization in mice
Objective: N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is beneficial in psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia. Patients with schizophrenia exhibit mesolimbic dopamine hyperfunction consequent to an endogenous sensitization process. This sensitization can be modeled in rodents by repeated exposure to psychostimulants, provoking an enduring amplified response at subsequent exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of NAC on amphetamine sensitization in mice. Methods: D-amphetamine was administered to C57BL/6 mice three times a week for 3 weeks; the dose was increased weekly from 1 to 3 mg/kg. NAC (60 mg/kg) or saline was administered intraperitoneally before saline or amphetamine during the second and third weeks. After a 4-week washout period, latent inhibition (LI) and the locomotor response to amphetamine 2 mg/kg were assessed. Results: Sensitization disrupted LI and amplified the locomotor response; NAC disrupted LI in control mice. In sensitized animals, NAC attenuated the enhanced locomotion but failed to prevent LI disruption. Conclusion: NAC warrants consideration as a candidate for early intervention in ultra-high risk subjects due to its safety profile and the relevance of its mechanism of action. Supplementing this proposition, we report that NAC attenuates sensitization-induced locomotor enhancement in mice. The finding that NAC disrupted LI incites a cautionary note and requires clarification
Transient thermal analysis of semiconductor diode lasers under pulsed operation
Self-heating in semiconductor lasers is often assumed negligible during pulsed operation,
provided the pulses are ‘short’. However, there is no consensus on the upper limit of
pulse width for a given device to avoid-self heating. In this paper, we present an experimental and
theoretical analysis of the effect of pulse width on laser characteristics. First,
a measurement
method is introduced to study thermal transients of edge-emitting lasers during pulsed
operation. This method can also be applied to lasers that do not operate in
continuous-wave mode. Secondly, an analytical thermal model is presented which is used to fit the
experimental data to extract important parameters for thermal analysis. Although
commercial numerical tools are available for such transient analyses, this model is more suitable for
parameter extraction due to its analytical nature. Thirdly, to validate this approach, it
was used to study a GaSb-based inter-band laser and an InP-based quantum cascade laser
(QCL). The maximum
pulse-width for less than 5% error in the measured threshold currents was determined to be 200 and 25
ns for the GaSb-based laser and QCL, respectively
