Going beyond 20 μm-sized channels for studying red blood cell phase separation in microfluidic bifurcations

Despite the development of microfluidics, experimental challenges are considerable for achieving a quantitative study of phase separation, i.e., the non-proportional dis- tribution of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) and suspending fluid, in microfluidic bifurca- tions with channels smaller than 20lm. Yet, a basic understanding of phase separation in such small vessels is needed for understanding the coupling between microvascular network architecture and dynamics at larger scale. Here, we present the experimental methodologies and measurement techniques developed for that pur- pose for RBC concentrations (tube hematocrits) ranging between 2% and 20%. The maximal RBC velocity profile is directly measured by a temporal cross-correlation technique which enables to capture the RBC slip velocity at walls with high resolu- tion, highlighting two different regimes (flat and more blunted ones) as a function of RBC confinement. The tube hematocrit is independently measured by a photometric technique. The RBC and suspending fluid flow rates are then deduced assuming the velocity profile of a Newtonian fluid with no slip at walls for the latter. The accuracy of this combination of techniques is demonstrated by comparison with reference measurements and verification of RBC and suspending fluid mass conservation at individual bifurcations. The present methodologies are much more accurate, with less than 15% relative errors, than the ones used in previous in vivo experiments. Their potential for studying steady state phase separation is demonstrated, highlight- ing an unexpected decrease of phase separation with increasing hematocrit in symmetrical, but not asymmetrical, bifurcations and providing new reference data in regimes where in vitro results were previously lacking. Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody and Screening for Postpartum Thyroid Dysfunction

    Get PDF
Postpartum thyroid dysfunction (PPTD) is a common disorder which causes considerable morbidity in affected women. The availability of effective treatment for hypothyroid PPTD, the occurrence of the disease in subsequent pregnancies and the need to identify subjects who develop long term hypothyroidism, has prompted discussion about screening for this disorder. There is currently no consensus about screening as investigations hitherto have been variable in their design, definitions and assay frequency and methodology. There is also a lack of consensus about a suitable screening tool although thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) is a leading contender. We present data about the use of TPOAb in early pregnancy and its value as a screening tool. Although its positive predictive value is moderate, its sensitivity and specificity when used in early pregnancy are comparable or better compared to other times during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Recent studies have also confirmed this strategy to be cost effective and to compare favourably with other screening strategies. We also explore the advantages of universal screening

The study of computer science and information systems requires commitment and dedication Students must learn above and beyond the standard requirements in order to compete in the job market Hence the motivation is the major driver to accomplish such requirements This paper investigates the possible factors affecting students motivation at Computer Science and Information System College in Najran University To find the best ways to improve student performance academic planning and improve college performance in general was behind the reason for the authors to study the motivation factors Fifty undergraduate students from a computer and information college participated in this research The students completed Academic Intrinsic Motivation Questionnaire MSLQ questionnaires In addition instructors answered interview questions related to factors affecting their students motivation Instructors who participated in seminars and interview believes the English language is the major barrier affecting motivation In addition instructors believes incentives and strict regulation may help improving students motivation Adding to incentives the sense of completion is missing beside no enough recognition from college and instructors The survey results shows students agreed that the Needs and Mastery factors motivate them Whilst the students wasn t able to decide on Power Fear Authority and Peers motivation factors The paper provides recommendations for college leaders and instructors on best ways to improve students motivation in order to reach better performanc

The Role of Thyrotrophin Receptor Antibody Assays in Graves' Disease

    Get PDF
Thyrotrophin receptor antibodies (TRAb) exist as stimulating or blocking antibodies in the serum (neutral TRAb have been identified recently). The clinical features of GD occur when stimulating TRAb predominate. But the relationship of TRAb to clinical phenotype and outcome is not clear when current assay methods are used. Therefore no consensus exists about its utility in diagnosing and predicting outcome in GD. The most commonly used TRAb assays, measure thyroid binding inhibiting immunoglobulins (TBII or “receptor assays”) and don't differentiate between stimulating and blocking antibodies. However, the more expensive, technically demanding and less freely available “biological assays” differentiate between them by their ability to stimulate cyclic AMP or failure to do so. Failure to differentiate between TRAb types and its heterogeneous molecular and functional properties has limited TBII use to GD diagnosis and differentiating from other forms of thyrotoxicosis. The current 2nd-3rd generation receptor assays are highly sensitive and specific when used for this purpose. TRAb assays should also be done in appropriate pregnant women. Current data do not support its use in outcome prediction as there is a significant variability of assay methodology, population characteristics and study design in published data, resulting in a lack of consensus
