    Experimental nonlocality-based randomness generation with non-projective measurements

    We report on an optical setup generating more than one bit of randomness from one entangled bit (i.e. a maximally entangled state of two-qubits). The amount of randomness is certified through the observation of Bell non-local correlations. To attain this result we implemented a high-purity entanglement source and a non-projective three-outcome measurement. Our implementation achieves a gain of 27%\% of randomness as compared with the standard methods using projective measurements. Additionally we estimate the amount of randomness certified in a one-sided device independent scenario, through the observation of EPR steering. Our results prove that non-projective quantum measurements allows extending the limits for nonlocality-based certified randomness generation using current technology.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    The Effects of Additives on the Dehydrogenation of Amorphous Manganese Borohydride and Its Crystalline Form after Solvent Filtration/Extraction

    A non-stoichiometric, amorphous a-Mn(BH4)(2x) hydride, accompanied by a NaCl-type salt, was mechanochemically synthesized from the additive-free mixture of (2NaBH4 + MnCl2), as well as from the mixtures containing the additives of ultrafine filamentary carbonyl nickel (Ni), graphene, and LiNH2. It is shown that both graphene and LiNH2 suppressed the release of B2H6 during thermal gas desorption, with the LiNH2 additive being the most effective suppressor of B2H6. During solvent filtration and extraction of additive-free, as well as additive-bearing, (Ni and graphene) samples from diethyl ether (Et2O), the amorphous a-Mn(BH4)(2x) hydride transformed into a crystalline c-Mn(BH4)2 hydride, exhibiting a microstructure containing nanosized crystallites (grains). In contrast, the LiNH2 additive most likely suppressed the formation of a crystalline c-Mn(BH4)2 hydride during solvent filtration/extraction. In a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), the thermal decomposition peaks of both amorphous a-Mn(BH4)(2x) and crystalline c-Mn(BH4)2 were endothermic for the additive-free samples, as well as the samples with added graphene and Ni.     O feijão-de-corda (Vigna unguiculata) apresenta grande importância social, cultural, agronômica e econômica para os agricultores familiares no Acre que trouxeram o hábito de cultivo e consumo do feijão-de-corda do Nordeste. Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar as sementes de variedades locais de feijão-de-corda coletadas em feiras e mercados públicos em diversos municípios do Acre no primeiro semestre de 2012. Em laboratório foram identificados descritores biométricos, forma, cor, brilho e peso de 100 sementes. Foram detectadas cinco formas de sementes, quatro cores distintas e três classes de brilho sendo duas variedades opacas. As variedades mostraram grande variabilidade no fator peso de 100 sementes com amplitude de 26,9 g. Quanto aos caracteres quantitativos observou-se grande variação nos valores de comprimento, largura e espessura das sementes entre as variedades mostrando que há variação genética entre os quinze cultivares de feijão-de-corda avaliados

    Foram analisados dados de rebanhos Canchim pertencentes a alguns estados do Brasil (IGA1) e clusters de municípios paulistas (IGA2) para a investigação da presença de interação genótipo-ambiente (IGA) para a característica peso ao sobreano (PS). Duas investigações distintas foram realizadas para os diferentes ambientes (IGA1 e IGA2) por meio da comparação de dois modelos sugeridos em cada ambiente, um com o efeito aleatório de touro-ambiente e o outro sem este efeito. Para o estudo no ambiente IGA1 foi constatada a presença da IGA, indicando alteração significativa no desempenho de PS dos animais conforme a região em que foram avaliados. No estudo no ambiente IGA2 não foi encontrada diferença significativa entre os desempenhos de PS nos clusters paulistas, sugerindo não haver IGA entre os municípios analisados. No entanto, no estudo de IGA2 houve variação entre os modelos das estimativas das variâncias genéticas, de ambiente e fenotípicas, o que não permitiu descartar a possibilidade da presença da IGA

    A biochemical case study is reported on a 50-year old lady known to have breast cancer. The woman was treated by mastectomy and this was followed by unraveling brain metastases three years post-diagnosis of the cancer, which was treated by radiation and chemotherapy. Two months after ending her treatment, she exhibited acute changes in her mental status manifested by severe amnesia and fever. A generalized analytical and biochemical assessment revealed the presence of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis

    Super-radiant light scattering from trapped Bose Einstein condensates

    We propose a new formulation for atomic side mode dynamics from super-radiant light scattering of trapped atoms. A detailed analysis of the recently observed super-radiant light scattering from trapped bose gases [S. Inouye {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 285}, 571 (1999)] is presented. We find that scattered light intensity can exhibit both oscillatory and exponential growth behaviors depending on densities, pump pulse characteristics, temperatures, and geometric shapes of trapped gas samples. The total photon scattering rate as well as the accompanied matter wave amplification depends explicitly on atom number fluctuations in the condensate. Our formulation allows for natural and transparent interpretations of subtle features in the MIT data, and provides numerical simulations in good agreement with all aspects of the experimental observations.Comment: 24 pages,16 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Las rickettsiosis transmitidas por garrapatas son afecciones de distribución mundial, que por diferentes motivos se pueden considerar emergentes y reemergentes. Hasta hace escasos años la única rickettsiosis transmitida por garrapatas en Latinoamérica era la infección por Rickettsia rickettsii, pero en la actualidad y fundamentalmente, gracias a la incorporación de nuevas herramientas para el diagnóstico microbiológico como la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa y secuenciación o el cultivo celular rápido en tubo cerrado, se han descrito e involucrado otras especies de Rickettsia en la producción de patología humana. En estas guías se detallan y describen las diferentes técnicas utilizadas para el diagnóstico microbiológico de las rickettsiosis. Además, se incluye una sección en la que se detallan las especies más importantes de garrapatas duras relacionadas con las rickettsiosis en Latinoamérica, con claves para su clasificación taxonómica.Tick-borne rickettsioses are worldwide infectious diseases that are considered emerging and re-emerging. Until recently the only tick-borne rickettsiosis present in Latin America was Rickettsia rickettsii infection, but to date, with the incorporation of new tools as PCR and sequencing and the quick cellular close tube cultures (Shell-vial), new species has been involved as human pathogens. In these guidelines, we offer an update of the microbiological assays for diagnosing rickettsioses.     Germinação e florescimento de cultivares locais de feijão-de-corda e feijoeiro comum em Rio Branco, Acre.

    Este trabalho teve como objetivo quantificar os processos de germinação de sementes em campo e laboratório e o florescimento de seis variedades locais de feijão comum e de quatro variedades de feijão-de-corda no Acre. Os dez materiais genéticos avaliados foram coletados no Acre no primeiro semestre de 2012. O teste de germinação em laboratório foi realizado usando 100 sementes mantidas em estufa a 250C por sete dias. No campo o experimento foi conduzido em delineamento em quatro blocos casualizados sendo contabilizada a germinação das plantas aos sete dias e o número de dias para florescimento. A germinação das sementes em campo foi superior ao teste de laboratório para maioria das variedades. O florescimento variou entre 23 e 56 dias dependendo da variedade
