    Role of Extruded Sheet Morphology in Phase Separation and Final Morphology of Superhydrophobic Polypropylene

    In this study, we prepared polypropylene sheets with a superhydrophobic surface from extruded sheets with a phase separation method. We investigated the influence of extrusion parameters on the morphological properties of the polypropylene sheet and found that two significantly different structures can be formed in the cross-section of the sheet when the cooling temperature was varied. The effect of the morphology of the extruded material was studied on phase separation and through that on the surface structure that formed. The created morphology of the extruded sheet plays a significant role in the procedure of the phase separation method and less in surface wettability. We also included a polypropylene blend and nucleated polypropylene in this study to investigate their role in surface morphological changes and indirectly on wetting behavior. Surfaces have become superhydrophobic with an increased water contact angle from 102° to 150° and contact angle hysteresis below 10°. For nucleated polypropylene samples, we achieved remarkably good results (a water contact angle of 158°). The morphological and wettability behavior of the surfaces were investigated with a polarized optical microscope and water contact angle measurements, and scanning electron microscopy, respectively

    Knowledge creation community portal for research development

    Developing thesis research remains the central requirement of graduation for most universities. Lack of personal knowledge and experience are among the main challenges facing post graduate students during their research completion. Failure to resolve these issues could lead to drop out or delay their graduation. It is considered that previously unacquainted research students who have already gone through the research writing can be a good knowledge and experience resource for those who have just started. It is a highly desirable to help post graduate students in order to overcome their difficulties in research development through facilitating experience and knowledge-sharing. Online communities and social networking have become important aspects in information systems technology nowadays. Developing or emerging these online communities for connecting educators can establish a powerful form of sustained professional learning. The purpose of this study is to develop web based community of knowledge-creation for research development, to help post graduate students overcome their research development difficulties, and to achieve such strategically professional sustainability. Multi-methodological approach was used for this study as it is more advisable for information system development research. The research was started by observation, literature review, and interviews to understand the current situation and identify required web tools and knowledge conversions within research development activities; next a questionnaire is used to develop the proposed model. Finally the information system was developed based on the proposed model. The user acceptance test proofs that the proposed model and developed system can successfully implemented and help post graduate students to overcome their difficulties

    Nucleon superfluidity versus thermal states of isolated and transiently accreting neutron stars

    The properties of superdense matter in neutron star (NS) cores control NS thermal states by affecting the efficiency of neutrino emission from NS interiors. To probe these properties we confront the theory of thermal evolution of NSs with observations of their thermal radiation. Our observational basis includes cooling isolated NSs (INSs) and NSs in quiescent states of soft X-ray transients (SXTs). We find that the data on SXTs support the conclusions obtained from the analysis of INSs: strong proton superfluidity with T_{cp,max} >= 10^9 K should be present, while mild neutron superfluidity with T_{cn,max} =(2*10^8 -- 2*10^9) K is ruled out in the outer NS core. Here T_{cn,max} and T_{cp,max} are the maximum values of the density dependent critical temperatures of neutrons and protons. The data on SXTs suggest also that: (i) cooling of massive NSs is enhanced by neutrino emission more powerful than the emission due to Cooper pairing of neutrons; (ii) mild neutron superfluidity, if available, might be present only in inner cores of massive NSs. In the latter case SXTs would exhibit dichotomy, i.e. very similar SXTs may evolve to very different thermal states

    [...] Nelle riflessioni di Bernhard, come in quelle di Bloch, l'esilità del traciato di confine tra opera ed esistenza contribuisce a determinare profondamente lo statuto stesso della immagine e dello sguardo che la contempla. Di fronte a un'arte che è divenuta terreno incerto, l'occhio dello spettatore non può che muoversi in costante bilico, sull'orlo del precipizio, sulla linea di demarcazione tra il mondo irredento e quel regno outopico che la rappresentazione artistica rivela. Ciò che emerge da entrambe le letture è la consapevolezza della necessità di calarsi nelle crepe e negli abissi della realtà. In fondo questo è uno degli insegnamenti fondamentali di Bloch: è nelle buche e nelle lacune che costellano il terreno dell'esistenza che si annida il possibile sognato. Il confine (lo Zwischenraum) incollocabile, tra vita e arte, deve essere affrontato in tutta la sua problematicità funambolesca, e non tolto per mezzo della creazione di un universo fittizio. La relazione pendolare restituisce il senso della cornice mobile, come consapevolezza della impossibilità di tracciare una fisionomia nitida e definitiva del reale. Sia nella prospettiva di Bemhard sia in quella di Bloch l'immagine che tiene prigionieria l'umanita e l'idea della forma formata, una soluzione definiva posticcia e inautentica. La necessaria contromossa consiste allora nell'affidarsi a uno sguardo inquieto, perché consapevole di un'alterità che sempre sfugge
