Women's Occupations in Japanese Language Textbooks: A Comparative Analysis of Textbooks and Teachers' Gender Consciousness

departmental bulletin pape

Spectrum and decays of kaonic hydrogen

By using the non-relativistic effective Lagrangian approach to bound states, a complete expression for the isospin-breaking corrections to the energy levels and the decay widths of kaonic hydrogen is obtained up-to-and-including O(alpha,m_d-m_u) in QCD. It is demonstrated that, although the leading-order corrections at O(alpha^{1/2},(m_d-m_u)^{1/2}) emerging due to the unitarity cusp, are huge, they can be expressed solely in terms of the KN S-wave scattering lengths. Consequently, at leading order, it is possible to derive parameter-free modified Deser-type relations, which can be used to extract the scattering lengths from the hadronic atom data.Comment: 9 pages, 3 postscript figures, epj style. Phantom appearance of non-phantom matter

Two cosmological models with non-phantom matter having the same expansion of the universe as phantom cosmologies are constructed. The first model is characterized by the evolving gravitational "constant" GG and a dark energy component with a non-conserved energy-momentum tensor. The second model includes two interacting components, the dark energy component and the matter component. Closed form solutions are obtained for the constant values of model parameters and constraints on the parameters of each model from cosmological observations are outlined. For both models it is explicitly shown how the components of each model produce the expansion of the universe characteristic of phantom cosmologies, despite the absence of phantom energy. These findings stress the interpretation of phantom energy as an effective description of the more complex dynamics of non-phantom matter.Comment: v1: 9 pages. v2: references added, minor changes in the text. v3: minor changes, references added and updated, version to appear in Eur. Calibration of the logarithmic-periodic dipole antenna (LPDA) radio stations at the Pierre Auger Observatory using an octocopter

    Get PDF
An in-situ calibration of a logarithmic periodic dipole antenna with a frequency coverage of 30 MHz to 80 MHz is performed. Such antennas are part of a radio station system used for detection of cosmic ray induced air showers at the Engineering Radio Array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, the so-called Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) . The directional and frequency characteristics of the broadband antenna are investigated using a remotely piloted aircraft carrying a small transmitting antenna. The antenna sensitivity is described by the vector effective length relating the measured voltage with the electric-field components perpendicular to the incoming signal direction. The horizontal and meridional components are determined with an overall uncertainty of 7.4(+0.9)(−)(0.3)% and 10.3(+2.8)(−)(1.7)% respectively. The measurement is used to correct a simulated response of the frequency and directional response of the antenna. In addition, the influence of the ground conductivity and permittivity on the antenna response is simulated. Both have a negligible influence given the ground conditions measured at the detector site. The overall uncertainties of the vector effective length components result in an uncertainty of 8.8(+2.1)(−)(1.3)% in the square root of the energy fluence for incoming signal directions with zenith angles smaller than 60°.Peer Reviewe

Spectral Calibration of the Fluorescence Telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    Get PDF
We present a novel method to measure precisely the relative spectral response of the fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We used a portable light source based on a xenon flasher and a monochromator to measure the relative spectral efficiencies of eight telescopes in steps of 5 nm from 280 nm to 440 nm. Each point in a scan had approximately 2 nm FWHM out of the monochromator. Different sets of telescopes in the observatory have different optical components, and the eight telescopes measured represent two each of the four combinations of components represented in the observatory. We made an end-to-end measurement of the response from different combinations of optical components, and the monochromator setup allowed for more precise and complete measurements than our previous multi-wavelength calibrations. We find an overall uncertainty in the calibration of the spectral response of most of the telescopes of 1.5% for all wavelengths; the six oldest telescopes have larger overall uncertainties of about 2.2%. We also report changes in physics measurables due to the change in calibration, which are generally small.Peer Reviewe

Multidimensional analyses reveal modulation of adaptive and innate immune subsets by tuberculosis vaccines

    Get PDF
We characterize the breadth, function and phenotype of innate and adaptive cellular responses in a prevention of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection trial. Responses are measured by whole blood intracellular cytokine staining at baseline and 70 days after vaccination with H4:IC31 (subunit vaccine containing Ag85B and TB10.4), Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG, a live attenuated vaccine) or placebo (n = ~30 per group). H4:IC31 vaccination induces Ag85B and TB10.4-specific CD4 T cells, and an unexpected NKTlike subset, that expresses IFN-γ, TNF and/or IL-2. BCG revaccination increases frequencies of CD4 T cell subsets that either express Th1 cytokines or IL-22, and modestly increases IFNγ-producing NK cells. In vitro BCG re-stimulation also triggers responses by donor-unrestricted T cells, which may contribute to host responses against mycobacteria. BCG, which demonstrated efficacy against sustained Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, modulates multiple immune cell subsets, in particular conventional Th1 and Th22 cells, which should be investigated in discovery studies of correlates of protection
