Nonâintact Families and Childrenâs Educational Outcomes: Comparing Native and Migrant Pupils
This study explores whether the association between living in a single-parent household and childrenâs educational outcomes differs by migration background through comparing natives with first- and second-generation migrant children from different areas of origin. While there is strong evidence of an educational gap between migrant and native pupils in Western countriesâand particularly in Italyâthe interaction with family structure has been under-investigated. We suggest that native children have more socioeconomic resources to lose as a consequence of parental breakups, and thus may experience more negative consequences from living in a single-parent household compared to migrant children, who tend to have poorer educational outcomes regardless of family disruptions. Moreover, for migrant children, family disruption could result from parentsâ migratory project
(transnationalism)
rather than separation or divorce, thus not necessarily implying parental conflict and a deteriorating family environment. Empirical analyses of data from the ISTAT âIntegration of the Second Generationâ survey (2015) show that native Italian pupils from single-parent households in lower secondary schools are more strongly penalised in terms of grades, and less likely to aspire to the most prestigious upper secondary tracks when compared to second- and, especially, first-generation children.
Indeed, the latter have been found to experience virtually no negative consequences from parental absence. Contrary to expectations, we found no substantial differences in the non-intact penalty based on the reason for parental absence (transnationalism vs divorce), nor by migrantsâ area of origin
Mycobacteriosis in Aquatic Invertebrates: A Review of Its Emergence
Mycobacteriosis is a chronic bacterial disease reported in aquatic and terrestrial animals,
including humans. The disease affects a wide range of cultured and wild organisms worldwide.
Mycobacteriosis is well-known in aquatic vertebrates (e.g., finfish, marine mammals), while in the last
few years, reports of its presence in aquatic invertebrates have been on the rise, for both freshwater
and marine species. The number of cases is likely to increase as a result of increased awareness,
surveillance and availability of diagnostic methods. Domestication of wild aquatic species and the
intensification of modern aquaculture are also leading to an increase in the number of reported
cases. Moreover, climate changes are affecting fresh and marine aquatic ecosystems. The increasing
reports of mycobacteriosis in aquatic invertebrates may also be influenced by global climate warming,
which could contribute to the microbesâ development and survival rates, pathogen transmission
and host susceptibility. Several species of the genus Mycobacterium have been diagnosed in aquatic
invertebrates; a few of them are significant due to their wide host spectrum, economic impact
in aquaculture, and zoonotic potential. The impact of mycobacteriosis in aquatic invertebrates is
probably underestimated, and there is currently no effective treatment other than facility disinfection.
In this review, we provide an overview of the diversity of mycobacterial infections reported in
molluscs, crustaceans, cnidarians, echinoderms and sponges. We highlight important issues relating
to its pathological manifestation, diagnosis and zoonotic consideration
Baseline pathological data of the wedge clam Donax trunculus from the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Basin)
In recent years, a collapse in Donax trunculus fishing yields has occurred in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Basin). There is little information available on the impact disease may have had on D. trunculus populations. For the first time, a pathological survey was performed on the natural beds of the bivalve on the Campania and Lazio coasts, western Italy. Detected pathogens and related diseases were analysed, and their prevalence and mean intensity values were calculated. Viral particles, Chlamydia-like organisms, ciliates, coccidians, microcells and trematodes were observed. An unknown ciliate was linked to severe inflammatory and necrotic lesions in the digestive gland. Metacercariae of the trematode Postmonorchis sp. were also strongly represented in almost all samples, reaching high levels of infection; however, none of the pathogens described required the World Organisation for Animal Health to be notified. Initial results indicated that further surveys related to environmental data are necessary in order to assess the relevance of these early observations in managing the declining D. trunculus population in the Tyrrhenian Sea.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
Design thinking for entrepreneurship: An explorative inquiry into its practical contributions
Design thinking (DT) is expanding its horizons across a variety of different domains. One of the early and debated contributions regarding DT addressed its relationship with the entrepreneurial field. Today, there are numerous contributions that design thinking can offer in the creation of new ventures. However, there are few examples in the literature that discuss the concrete impacts and benefits of adopting DT in this field, demonstrating it through entrepreneurial projects. This paper aims to explore practitionersâ experiences with the application of theories from design thinking inside an entrepreneurial context. The impacts of
the learning and the relative application of the main design thinking principles are evaluated via a sample of 50 participants in an international summer academy that offered
education on DT concepts and practices. Through this research, a deep understanding of how design thinking can contribute to entrepreneurship is provided, highlighting which specific DT abilities enable the development of entrepreneurial activity
High nonlinear optical response in 4-chlorothiazole-based azo dyes
Four azo dyes showing high nonlinear optical properties were prepared, based on a 4-chlorothiazole azo moiety functionalized with strong acceptor groups and/or further donor/acceptor groups along the conjugated backbone. The effects of the acceptors as well as the lateral donor/acceptor groups upon absorption properties, thermal stability and second order nonlinear optical activity were evaluated. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Imatinib-mesylate for all patients with hypereosinophilic syndrome?
Some recent papers have focused on the activity of imatinib-mesylate, a selective inhibitor of tyrosine kinase, in idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) [1], [2], [3] and [4]. In this setting, a possible therapeutic target was identified by Cools et al. [2], who described the fusion tyrosine-kinase gene FIP1L1/PDGFRA as the result of an interstitial deletion within chromosome 4 in nine out of sixteen (56%) patients affected by HES. Of interest, although in this study the response to imatinib was strictly correlated with the presence of FIP1L1/PDGFRA rearrangement (all patients with such a molecular lesion treated with imatinib responded), only five out of nine responding patients evidenced the abnormal transcript [2]. Diagnostic accuracy of short-time inversion recovery sequence in Graves' ophthalmopathy before and after prednisone treatment
Introduction: In Graves' Ophthalmopathy, it is important to distinguish active inflammatory phase, responsive to immunosuppressive treatment, from fibrotic unresponsive inactive one. The purpose of this study is, first, to identify the relevant orbital magnetic resonance imaging signal intensities before treatment, so to classify patients according to their clinical activity score (CAS), discriminating inactive (CAS3) subjects and, second, to follow post-steroid treatment disease. Methods: An observational study was executed on 32 GO consecutive patients in different phases of disease, based on clinical and orbital Magnetic Resonance Imaging parameters, compared to 32 healthy volunteers. Orbital Magnetic Resonance Imaging was performed on a 1.5 tesla Magnetic Resonance Unit by an experienced neuroradiologist blinded to the clinical examinations. Results: In pre-therapy patients, compared to controls, a medial rectus muscle statistically significant signal intensity ratio (SIR) in short-time inversion recovery (STIR) (long TR/TE) sequence was found, as well as when comparing patients before and after treatment, both medial and inferior rectus muscle SIR resulted significantly statistically different in STIR. These increased outcomes explain the inflammation oedematous phase of disease, moreover after steroid administration, compared to controls; patients presented lack of that statistically significant difference, thus suggesting treatment effectiveness. Conclusion: In our study, we proved STIR signal intensities increase in inflammation oedematous phase, confirming STIR sequence to define active phase of disease with more sensibility and reproducibility than CAS alone and to evaluate post-therapy involvement. © 2014 Springer-Verlag
Perylene diimides functionalized with N-thiadiazole substituents: Synthesis and electronic properties in OFET devices
Two new perylene diimide derivatives N,NâČ-bis(5-tridecyl-1,3,4- thiadiazol-2-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic 3,4:9,10-diimide (PDI-T1) and N,NâČ-bis[5-(1-hexyl)nonyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]perylene-3,4,9, 10-tetracarboxylic 3,4:9,10-diimide (PDI-T2), achieved by functionalizing the basic perylene molecular core at imide nitrogen with 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings, have been synthesized. Both these compounds make possible the fabrication of n-type organic thin-film transistors able to work in air, even when bare SiO2 surfaces are utilized as gate dielectric. As active channels of transistors in the bottom-contact bottom-gate configuration, PDI-T1 evaporated films exhibited a maximum mobility of 0.016 cm2/V s in vacuum. For evaporated PDI-T2 films, instead, mobility values were found to be more than one order of magnitude lower, because of their reduced degree of crystalline order. However, PDI-T2 films can be also deposited by solution techniques and field-effect transistors were fabricated by spin-coating, displaying mobility values ranging between 10-6 and 10-5 cm2/V s. Similar to what previously found for other perylene diimide derivatives, our experimental work also demonstrates that the electrical response of both PDI-T1 and PDI-T2 transistors under ambient conditions can be improved by increasing the level of hydrophobicity of the dielectric surface. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
