Despite the enormous anthropogenic and environmental hazards affecting wild fisheries resources, southern coastal waters are still considered one of the aquatic biodiversity hotspots in Bangladesh. Therefore, the present study was conducted to make a complete account of fishes and to assess their condition and conservation status in the rivers spread across four southern coastal districts of Bangladesh. During the study period from January to December 2014, a total of 98 species of fish were recorded belonging to 81 genera, 48 families and 13 orders. Perciforms were recorded as the most diverse fish group in terms of both number and individuals of species observed. Of the 98 species, 26.53% were listed as Locally Threatened in Bangladesh, including 11.22% species listed as Vulnerable, 10.20% as Endangered and 5.10% as Critically Endangered. Four population indices viz, Shannon–Wiener index (H), Simpson’s dominance index (D), Simpson’s index of diversity (1-D) and Margalef’s index (d) were applied to demonstrate the species diversity, richness and evenness of fish in sampling areas and their overall values were 3.54-3.70, 0.04-0.05, 0.95-0.96 and 7.48-8.67, respectively. To sustain the prospect of fisheries biodiversity in the southern coastal areas of Bangladesh, management and conservation strategies like restocking economically important fish species, establishing and maintaining fish sanctuaries, banning indiscriminate fishing and destructive fishing gears, identification and protection of the breeding and nursery grounds should be taken into consideration with utmost priority.

Total Quality Management: An Islamic Perspective

    Get PDF
Quality management has occupied a vast space of the management literature in general and the quality management literature in particular. Academics as well as practitioners devoted much attention to the Total Quality Management (TQM) philosophy and its impact on business performance. It is found that the roots of TQM and its successor can be traced to more than 1400 years ago in the holy book Al-Qur’?n and the teachings of Prophet Mohammad, Peace and Blessings of All?hbe upon him. Many verses in the holy Qur’an stressed the impact of good deeds and doing the right things. Not only we will explain these principles, but we will give some business applications of these principles from an Islamic perspective. This paper is therefore structured as follows. First, we will offer some of the existing concept of the quality management paradigms, literature review and suggest definition to reflect our contribution from an Islamic perspective. Second we will discuss the dimensions of the philosophical under pinning of quality management from Islamic Perspective and then principles quality management from Islamic perspective and finally quality leadership for quality management

The American Journal of International Law.

Distribution of Risk and Return: A Statistical Test of Normality on Dhaka Stock Exchange

The present study deals with the normal distribution of risk and return of the capital market of Bangladesh. Normal distribution of return is an essential assumption in the field of efficient market hypothesis which posits that the returns of a market must follow the random walk behaviour. Again it is an integral part of Capital Asset Pricing Model, which suggests that if an investor wants to get higher return then he must consider higher risk, this denotes to the normal distribution of risk and return. This study has used a set of parametric and non-parametric tools to examine the returns calculated from the three indices of Dhaka Stock Exchange: DGEN (from 2002 to 2010), DSE20 (from 2002 to 2010) and DSI (from 2006 to 2010). As positive skewness and kurtosis are evident in most of the cases, the returns are found to be suffering from some extremities. Daily, weekly and monthly returns are not normally distributed which shows the contra-evidence of random walk behaviour of market return. Besides the inconsistency between risk and return (daily and weekly) is found, which suggests that additional return may be achieved without having exposure to additional risk. The present research was conducted to evaluate the potential ecological and human health risk of toxic elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb) from agricultural soils around the industrial areas of Tangail district in Bangladesh. Potential ecological and human health risk were assessed through enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (Cif), geoaccumulation index (Igeo), pollution load index (PLI), toxic unit analysis, exposure pathway, hazard quotient and hazard index. The mean concentration of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Pb in the studied soils were 5.88, 13.92, 18.07, 5.90, 2.19 and 8.08 mg/kg, respectively. The mean values of enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, contamination factor, pollution load index and toxic units were found low for all metals excluding Cd. Considering the severity of potential ecological risk factor for single metal (Eir), the descending order of pollutants was Cd > As > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cr. In the perspective of potential ecological risk (PER), soils from all sampling sites indicated moderate to very high PER. Chronic daily intake values were higher in children than the adult for both ingestion and dermal contact as body weight of children was lower than the adult. The non-cancer health risks related to individual element exposure through soil ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation was low for all investigated elements resulted in a HQ < 1, indicating low risk for both adults and children. Considering the total exposure of hazard index of ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation, there was no chance of having non-cancer risk for the inhabitants of the studied industrial area. Carcinogenic risks for both adult and children lying between an acceptable ranges.Banglades

The corruption of waqf land in Malaysia is still happening even though this issue has been raised for a long time. Apart from the growing population in Malaysia, the standard of living in Malaysia is also high. The number of B40 community groups is increasing due to the increase in the B40 community class measurement graph. There are still many who need housing as a place to live and education as a core element of life. Thus, this study is to see the extent of preservation of waqf for education and housing development built on waqf land to help the Malay Muslim community, especially in Malaysia. This study is a qualitative study that uses a survey research design. The study found that the issue of waqf land that has been going on for a long time is starting to be addressed as in some states that have implemented residential waqf and educational waqf. However, only a few states have succeeded in curbing the issue of waqf land corruption by making waqf properties for residence and education. Therefore, the construction of waqf residences and waqf study institutes should be empowered because settlement and education are a necessity for the community to build a prosperous civilization

Is Capital Structure Study Still A Puzzle? Southeast Asian Panel Data Evidence

    Get PDF
Issues on inconclusive results in capital structure studies are still unresolved todate. Various perhaps and justifications being put forward by researchers past and present to rationalize their inconsistent findings. Different leverage definitions used in the studies is identified as one of the main factors that lead to inconsistent results recorded in the literature. Different leverage definition serves differently according to the needs of the study thus produces inconclusive findings. Different models employed also play a significant role in this issue of inconsistencies. Different natures of models employed influence greatly the results in capital structure studies throughout. The three countries selected for this study, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore prove that inconsistent results reported within each country are due to the different definitions of leverage (six leverage measures used) as well as the different models (the static and dynamic models) employed. Inconsistencies are more rampant in the use of different leverage definitions with the same model as compared to different models with the same leverage definition. The Fixed Effect Model and Partial Adjustment Model are employed representing the static and dynamic models respectively. Therefore, the capital structure studies are still craving for one universally accepted leverage definition and also one appropriate model to satisfy the needs of in depth understanding of the relationship between capital structure decisions and value of a firm
