Dept. of Health Administration/박사This study examined factors relevant to successful aging of the elderly in a small-medium city and researched the effect of ageism on successful aging. The sample group was composed of 556 senior citizens aged 65 and over residing in Jeonju city. The research period was from July 20 to August 31, 2011 and a structuralized questionnaire was used to measure health related behaviors, health status, characteristics of social network, physical?cognitive function, psychological traits, productive activity and ageism experience.Collected data was analyzed by using SPSS 15.0 and Amos 7.0.The main research results of this study are as follows.First, this study analyzed the differences presented according to socio-economic variables in the following components for successful aging: health-related behaviors, health status, characteristics of social network, physical?cognitive function, psychological traits and productive activities. Analysis results presented that higher statistical significance was presented by most variables measuring health status, characteristics of social network (size of social network, emotional support, instrumental support), physical?cognitive function, psychological traits (life satisfaction, self-efficacy), and productive activities among younger, higher economic status and academic ability.Second, this study used a structural equation model to establish and verify paths formed between the 6 main variables of successful aging: health related behaviors, health status, characteristics of social network, physical?cognitive function, psychological traits, and productive activity. First, it was verified that health-related behaviors positively affect health status and characteristics of social network. In other words, steady exercise improves health and broadens opportunities for meeting other people. Furthermore, health status positively affects physical?cognitive function. Next, it was shown that the characteristics of social network positively affect physical?cognitive function and psychological traits. On the other hand, psychological traits are positively influenced by physical?cognitive function while positively affecting productive activities. Lastly, it was shown that productive activities indirectly affect physical?cognitive function through psychological traits without providing any direct effect. This not only verifies that the model of Row and Kahn excessively pursues objective information, but also shows that the emotional aspect, such as life satisfaction and self-efficacy, also plays an important role in successful aging.Third, according to the observation on the mediator effect of ageism experience on the process of successful aging, it was presented that groups with high ageism experience largely affected the domains in the path related with characteristics of social network, physical?cognitive function, and psychological traits. This signifies that groups with high ageism experience can significantly affect mental characteristics, such as cognitive function and self-efficacy, due to psychological deprivation experienced in relation to discrimination. As presented in these research results, successful aging is significantly affected by physical health, mental health, and social health, which in turn emphasizes the need for drafting relevant policies and programs. First, to enhance physical and mental health, it is essential to activate a health improvement program and consulting program customized according to the individual characteristics of senior citizens and regional society. As most of the health improvement programs provided in the present day do not consider the individual characteristics of the elderly, it is important to activate a regional elderly-customized health improvement program in health centers and welfare centers. In addition, as it has been verified that ageism experience increases the mental anxiety of the elderly, measures must be taken to minimize ageism and boost mental health. Lastly, it is important to provide the elderly with places to enjoy or take part in social activities in order to improve the social health of the aged.restrictio
