    Purpose: The purpose of this finite element analysis study is to introduce the novel Lock screw system and analyze its mechanical property to see if it can prevent abutment screw loosening. Materials and Methods: The Lock screw is a component tightened on the inside of the implant abutment which applies compressive force to the abutment screw head. To investigate the effect, modeling was done using CAD program and it was analyzed by finite element analysis under various load conditions. First, the preload was measured according to the tightening torque of the abutment screw then it was compared with the theoretical value to verify the analytical model. The validated analytical model was then divided into those with no external load and those with 178 N, and the tightening torque of the lock screw was changed to 10, 20, 30 Ncm respectively to examine the property of stress distribution on the implant components. Results: Using Lock screw under various loading conditions did not produce equivalent stresses beyond the yield strength of the implant components. In addition, the axial load was increased at the abutment-abutment screw interface. Conclusion: The use of Lock screw does not exert excessive stress on the implant components and may increase the frictional force between the abutment-abutment screw interface, thus it is considered to prevent loosening of the abutment screw.ope

    After the teeth were extracted, maxillary and mandibular alveolar ridges show the opposite resorption pattern and as a result, the mandibular arch is enlarged than maxillary arch relatively. In this situation, we should evaluate both alveolar ridge relationship and arrange the artificial teeth properly for stability of removable prosthesis. This case is a 77 years old male patient who wishes to make removable prosthesis and has atrophic alveolar ridge. By use of model scanner and CAD software, the angle between interalveolar crest line and occlusal plane was easily measured. Depending on the measurement, the artificial teeth are arranged in unilateral cross bite and after completion, patientwas satisfied with the denture which showed proper stability, retention, support.ope

    Visible Light-Mediated Sustainable Antibacterial Activity and Osteogenic Functionality of Au and Pt Multi-Coated TiO 2 Nanotubes

    The visible light reactions of noble metal-based photocatalysts have been increasingly utilized to investigate their antibacterial activities. Furthermore, the photoreactions at various visible light wavelengths for specific combinations of titania nanotubes and noble metal nanoparticles have been found to promote osteogenic functionality. In this investigation, a novel multi-coating combination of noble metals (gold and platinum) on titania nanotubes was assessed using plasmonic photocatalysis and low-level laser therapy at 470 and 600 nm. The results showed that this coating on the nanotubes promoted antibacterial activity and osteogenic functionality. The order in which the gold and platinum coatings were layered onto the titania nanotubes strongly affected the osteogenic performance of the human mesenchymal stem cells. These results have identified a new approach for the development of efficient novel combinations of noble metal nanoparticles and titania nanotubes with visible light responses, sustainable antimicrobial activity, and osteogenic functionality.ope

    Visible Light-Enhanced Antibacterial and Osteogenic Functionality of Au and Pt Nanoparticles Deposited on TiO 2 Nanotubes

    This study aimed at evaluating the visible light mediated antimicrobial and osteogenic applications of noble metal, such as gold (Au) and platinum (Pt) coated titania (TiO2) nanotubes (NTs). In this study, the Au and Pt nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on anodized 100 nm TiO2 NTs by ion plasma sputtering. The Au and Pt NPs were mainly deposited on the top surface layer of TiO2 NTs and showed light absorbance peaks around the 470 and 600 nm visible light region used in this study, as seen from the surface characterization. From the results of antibacterial activity test, Au and Pt NPs that were deposited on TiO2 NTs showed excellent antibacterial activity under 470 nm visible light irradiation due to the plasmonic photocatalysis based on the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of the Au and Pt NPs. In addition, alkaline phosphate activity test and quantitative real-time PCR assay of osteogenic related genes resulted that these NPs promoted the osteogenic functionality of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) under 600 nm visible light irradiation, because of the synergic effect of the photothermal scattering of noble metal nanoparticles and visible light low-level laser therapy (LLLT). Therefore, the combination of noble metal coated TiO2 NTs and visible light irradiation would be expected to perform permanent antibacterial activity without the need of an antibacterial agent besides promoting osteogenic functionality.ope

    A Comparative Study of Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing Techniques for a Zirconia Dental Product: An Analysis of the Manufacturing Accuracy and the Bond Strength of Porcelain to Zirconia

    This study was aimed at preparing zirconia samples via additive manufacturing (AM) and subtractive manufacturing (SM) and testing the following aspects: (1) the manufacturing accuracy of the zirconia samples and (2) the bond strength of porcelain to zirconia to evaluate the applicability of the zirconia fabricated by AM in dental clinics. We used three milling machines for SM (AR, K5, and UP) and a 3D printer for AM (AO). The manufacturing accuracy of the zirconia specimen in the internal and marginal areas was evaluated by superimposing techniques to calculate the root mean square (RMS) values. The bond strengths of porcelain to zirconia prepared via SM and AM were measured using a universal testing machine. The internal and marginal RMS values of the zirconia prepared by AM (AO) were within the range of those of the zirconia prepared by SM (AR, K5, and UP). Moreover, the bond strength value of the zirconia prepared by AM (35.12 ยฑ 4.09 MPa) was significantly higher than that of the zirconia prepared by SM (30.26 ยฑ 5.20 MPa). Therefore, AM technology has significant potential for applications in dentistry.ope

    The effects of desensitizing agents, bonding resin and tooth brushing on dentin permeability, in vitro

    PURPOSE. The effects of desensitizing agent are often for a short duration. One of the reasons is believed to be wear of desensitizing agent by tooth brushing. To reduce the wear and make the duration longer, dental bonding resin was applied and the changes of dentin permeability after toothbrushing were measured. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Extracted teeth free from caries were chosen. Coronal dentin discs with thickness of 1 mm were prepared. Using the split chamber device developed by Pashely, hydraulic conductance and scanning electron microscope images (SEM) were compared and contrasted before and immediately after the application of desensitizing agent and bonding resin and then after equivalent tooth brushing of 1 week, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks. Four commercially available desensitizing agents were used in this study; they were All-Bond 2, Seal & Protect, Gluma, and MS Coat. And Dentin/Enamel Bonding resin (Bisco Inc.) was used. The results of this study are as follows. RESULTS. On all specimens, the hydraulic conductance decreased after the application of tooth desensitizing agent and bonding resin. Compared with the specimens treated only with desensitizer, the specimens treated with All-Bond 2, Gluma, MS Coat and plus D/E bonding resin had a little increase in hydraulic conductance after 1, 2 and 6-week tooth brushing. In case of Seal & Protect, the specimens showed the same result only after 6-week tooth brushing. On examination of SEM, the dentinal tubule diameter had decreased after treatment of desensitizing agents and bonding resin. And the specimens treated with All-Bond2, Seal&Protect, Gluma, MS Coat and plus D/E bonding resin had an significant decrease in diameter of dentinal tubule after 6-week tooth brushing. CONCLUSION. According to the results of this study, it is effective to use bonding resin after application of desensitizer in reducing the wear by tooth brushing and making the duration longer. In this study, just 6-week tooth brushing was performed, and it is not enough to regard it as a long-term data. So further study is needed and more perfect method for treating dentin hypersensitivity should be developed.ope

    The treatment of patients with severe periodontitis should be proceeded step-by-step through an accurate diagnosis of each patientsโ€™ individual tooth and with a strategic treatment plan. Implant-supported fixed prosthetic restoration has the advantage of high patient satisfaction and stable vertical dimension compared to the removable partial denture. However, multiple teeth defect areas lacking hard tissue may be disadvantageous in aesthetic failure and longer treatment time. In addition, it takes a certain period of time to manufacture and install a conventional fixed prosthesis, and during this process, the provisional prosthesis must satisfy the mechanical, biological, and aesthetic requirements of teeth. The purpose of this article is to describe the fabrication of implant-supported fixed prosthesis through a step-by-step approach in a partially edentulous patient.ope

    Near-infrared laser-mediated drug release and antibacterial activity of gold nanorod-sputtered titania nanotubes

    The infection control of implants is one of the hot issues in the field of medicine and dentistry. In this study, we prepared gold nanorod-sputtered titania nanotubes on titanium surface, which is the main component of implant material, and aimed to estimate the remote-controlled tetracycline release and resulting antibacterial effects of gold nanorod-sputtered titania nanotubes using near-infrared laser irradiation. Gold nanorods prepared by ion plasma sputtering (aspect ratio = 1:3) showed optical properties like those of chemically synthesized gold nanorods, exhibiting photothermal effects in the near-infrared region, as demonstrated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and diffuse ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared spectrophotometry. In addition, a 2 wt% tetracycline/polycaprolactone mixture was found to be the most suitable experimental group to demonstrate the biological compatibilities and antibacterial activities. The results of antibacterial agar diffusion tests and near-infrared-mediated tetracycline release tests in vivo confirmed that remote-controlled tetracycline elution using near-infrared laser irradiation was highly effective. Therefore, gold nanorod-sputtered titania nanotubes would be expected to enable the continued use of the photothermal therapy of gold nanorods and extend the limited use of titania showing photocatalytic activity only within the ultraviolet-to-near-infrared region.ope
