A Study of the Health Effect on the Traffic Policemen due to Exposure to Air Pollution - Measurement of individual exposure to CO and Health assessment - Yo Seop Kim Dept. of Environmental Science Graduate School of Health Science and Management Yonsei University (Directed by Professor, Yong chang, Ph.D) Recently, the number of motor vehicles has increased to about 4 million and the exhaust gas of these vehicles have become a more threatening factor to human health. The traffic policemen are among the higest health risk taking group since they have long working hours which are directly exposed to air pollutants. To study the effects of air pollution to the health of traffic policemen, both direct and indirect approaches were used. As an indirect approach, 187 traffic policemen who work in urban(Mapo) and suburban(Ansan) area were surveyed with a self administered questionnaire. Among these policemen, 31 of them had their personal CO exposure monitored for 8 hours and their %HbCO in blood measured. The results are as follows: 1. Complaint of health subjective symptoms of 187 traffic policemen was significantly higher in urban area than in suburban area. And that of policemen on compulsory duty under age 25, was higher than that of regular policemen. There was no significant difference between smokers and non-smokers. 2. Among those who answered, 94.1% clamed that air pollution is severe in Korea, and 96.1% replied that air pollution does great harm to health. This shows high recognition of health risk due to air pollution among traffic policemen. 3. Policemen on outdoor duty who had an intense health hazard intelligence for road-duty, also had a higher complaint of health subjective symptoms. 4. An 8 hours personal CO exposure of 31 subjects were ranged form 1.4 to 14.5ppm with the average of 6.7ppm. Those who were an outdoor duty had 3.8 times higher exposure than indoor duty. 5. %HbCO levels in blood per subject was 4.25%, which had no statistically significant difference according to duty type. But, the older and the heavier smokers had higher %HbCO levels. 6.
