The Influence of Chinese Nationalism on China Film Industry Since 1990s

중국은 개혁 개방을 통해서 연평균 10%에 이르는 경제 성장을 이루었다. 이러한 경제적 성공의 이면에는 빈부 격차의 확대, 지역 격차의 확대, 소수민족문제 등 사회 갈등 요소도 점진적으로 증대하였다. 이러한 중국 사회의 변화는 중국정부의 이데올로기의 변화의 원인으로 작용한다. 중국 정부는 사회의 통합과 통치의 정당성을 확보하기 위해서 1990년대 중화민족주의를 통치 이념으로 새롭게 조명한다. 본 논문은 중국 영화산업의 개혁 개방과정에서 중국 민족주의가 어떤 역할을 하였는지 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 중국 영화산업이 90년대 말까지 시장의 붕괴를 우려할 정도까지 시장의 침체기를 겪다가 2000년 이후 무협 대작영화를 중심으로 시장의 폭발적인 성장을 이룬 측면에 주목한다. 본 논문은 개혁개방시기 중국에서 중국영화인과 정부사이에 긴장관계에 있다가 2000년대 들어와 무협영화의 중화민족주의 요인에 의해서 적극적인 협력 동반자관계로 전환된다고 설명한다. 본고는 민족주의 변수가 중국 영화산업의 시장화와 개방화 정책이 효과적으로 작동 될 수 있게 하는 촉매역할을 한다고 여긴다. 곧, 중화 민족주의 요소를 담지하는 무협 대작영화가 중국정부와 영화계를 상호 협력적인 관계로 변화시키고, 이는 다시 중국 영화 시장의 급속한 성장을 가져왔다고 주장한다. China has experienced an economic growth rate of 10% since adopting open-door reform policies. However, along with this success, there has been an expansion of the gap between rich and poor, between regions, and a gradual increase in social conflicts such as problems with the ethnic minorities. These changes in Chinese society have been reflected in governmental ideology shifts, with the Chinese government seeking to maintain its legitimacy through adopting the guiding principle of Chinese nationalism during the 1990s. This paper examines the impact of this Chinese nationalist ideology on the Chinese film industry during the reform period. The Chinese film industry suffered a serious decline during the 1990s which lasted until 2000. After 2000, however, series of martial arts epics brought about an explosive growth in the industry. This paper looks at the tense relationship between the Chinese government and film industry during the reform period, and the progression to a cooperative partnership between the two following the release of the Chinese Kung Fu films(Wu Xia Pian) from 2000. This thesis looks at the role of nationalism as a catalyst in the implementation of the marketization and opening policies. We argue that the insertion of nationalistic elements into the martial arts epics was an act of mutual support between the film industry and the government, and because of this, the Chinese film industry was able to rapidly become successful again
