    The ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey (the GIS Catalog Project): Source Counts and Evidence for Emerging Population of Hard Sources

    We present first results from the ASCA Medium Sensitivity Survey (AMSS; or the GIS catalog project). From the serendipitous fields amounting to 106 degE-2, we determined the Log N - Log S relations in the 0.7-7 keV and 2-10 keV bands with the best statistical accuracy obtained so far, over the flux range from 1 x 10E-11 to 5 x 10E-14 and 7 x 10E-14 erg sE-1 cmE-2, respectively. When the sources detected in the 0.7-7 keV band are divided into two subsamples with higher and lower spectral hardness, the former exhibits a significantly steeper slope than the latter at fluxes below ~10E-12 erg sE-1 cmE-2 (0.7-7 keV). The average spectrum of sources becomes continuously harder toward fainter fluxes, from a photon index of 2.1 in the 0.7-10 keV range at the flux of ~10E-11 to 1.6 at ~10E-13 erg sE-1 cmE-2 (0.7-7 keV). This is consistent with the comparison of source counts between the 2-10 keV and the 0.7-2 keV band, and solves the puzzle of their discrepancy reported previously. Our results demonstrate rapid emergence of hard X-ray sources with a decreasing flux from \~10E-12 to ~10E-13 erg sE-1 cmE-2 (2-10 keV).Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures (including 2 color figures).     51歳男性.患者は右胸部痛を主訴に近医を受診, 胸部X線・CTにて右胸水, 多発性肺腫瘍を指摘され, 著者らの施設へ紹介入院となった.胸部CTでは上記所見とともに左腎腫瘍が発見され, 精査の結果, 左腎癌の肺転移と診断し, 根治的左腎摘除術を施行した.病理組織学的にClear cell carcinomaで, 術後, 肺転移に対しIFN-α投与を開始したが, 1ヵ月後より四肢の痺れが出現した.頭部CT・MRIにて脳転移と診断し, gamma knife radiosurgeryを行ったところ, 脳転移は消失した.肺転移はIFN-αとIL-2の併用投与にて消失が得られたが, 治療中うつによる自殺企図をおこした.INF-αまたはIL-2による副作用と診断し, 両薬剤を中止し, 抗うつ剤投与にて精神状態の安定が得られたA 51-year-old man with left renal tumor and multiple lung metastases was admitted to our hospital for treatment. Left nephrectomy was performed, and pathological diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma (clear cell carcinoma, G2, pT3a). Initially, Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) therapy was started for lung metastases. About 40 days after surgery, head magnetic resonance imaging revealed brain metastases, and therefore gamma knife radiosurgery(GKS) was performed. Since chest computed tomography showed no change in lung metastases, we tried a combination of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and IFN-alpha therapy to elininate those metastases. As a result, neither lung nor brain metastases could be detected at the 4th month follow-up examination. At 5 months after the IL-2 and IFN-alpha therapy, the patient attempted suicide. Therefore, the IL-2 and IFN-alpha therapy was stopped and an antidepressant was prescribed. Now 11 months after withdrawal of the IL-2 and IFN-alpha, the patient's mental condition remains stable. No recurrence of the cancer has been detected by CT

    A simple method to detect step height, slope angle and trench width using four PSD range sensors (GP2D12) is proposed, and the reproducibility and accuracy of characteristic parameter detection are examined. The detection error of upward slope angle is within 2.5 degrees, while that of downward slope angle exceeded 20 degrees very large. In order to reduce such errors, a range sensor that has better range-voltage performance must be introduced, or we will have to increase trial frequency to prevent detection delay. Step height can be identified with an error off ± 1.5mm. Trench width cannot be reliably measured at this time.     ASCA observation of Unusually X-ray Hard Radio Quiet QSO Kaz 102

    We have observed a radio-quiet QSO Kaz 102 (z=0.136) with ASCA as a part of our program of complete spectral characterization of hard X-ray selected AGNs. We found that Kaz 102 shows unusual spectral properties. A simple power-law with absorption in our galaxy gave a satisfactory description of the spectrum. However, it showed a very hard photon index of Gamma=1.0 with no sign of deep absorption or a prominent spectral feature. We further explored the Compton reflection with Fe K-alpha line and warm absorber models for hardening the spectrum. Both gave statistically satisfactory fits. However, the Compton reflection model requires a very low metal abundance (0.03-0.07 in solar units).The warm absorber model with no direct component is preferred and gave a very high ionization parameter xi=200. If this is the case, the values of xi, warm absorber column density, and variability over about 10 years may suggest that the warm absorber resides in the broad-line region and crosses the line of sight to the central X-ray source.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures.
