Two cases of urinary retention secondary to benign inframmatory nervous diseases

We report two cases of acute urinary retention secondary to benign inflammatory nervous disease. Case 1 is in a 48-year-old male who was diagnosed with aseptic meningitis. Case 2 is in a 67-year-old male who was diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. These two cases differred in specific mechanism of the disease, but both shared symptoms of temporal voiding disturbance due to sacral radiculopathy (Elsberg syndrome). This condition is extremely rare, but should be kept in mind because delayed treatment can lead to permanent impairment

Morphological Characteristics and Suitable Temperature for the Growth of Several Strains of the Rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis

Ten strains of the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis collected from various places were morphologically studied by measuring 3 parts of lorica: Lorica length, maximal lorica width and minimal lorica width, at the growth stage of biological minimum. Suitable temperature for the growth of each strains was judged by the values of two indices: Net reproduction rate (R₀) and intrinsic rate of population increase (r) obtained at various temperatures. Many first-laid eggs were cultured separately in many test tubes each containing two or three individuals and were observed to obtain the survival rate and fecundity at a regular intervals (1~3 times/day), while food suspension (marine type of Chlorella sp.; 277×10⁴ cells/ml) was renewed at every time of observation. From the data of survival rate and fecundity thus obtained, the values of two indices were calculated by Birch\u27s computational method. Results obtained are as follows. The strains used in this studies can be divided into two groups, so-called L- and S-types, according to Ōgami. Even in the strains belonging to the same group, however, the size and shape of occiput spines differ slightly with different strains. There are some strains to be considered as the intermediate form between two types. On the basis of the values of R₀ and r, the suitable temperature for the growth of the strains belonging to S-type is estimated as around 30℃, and the upper limit of temperature for the growth may be over 35℃. For the strains of L-type, relatively low temperature is suitable compared with S-type, and they can grow even at 16℃. These facts support Ōgami\u27s results that the strains of S-type is adaptable to higher temperature than those of L-type. But, even in the strains belonging to the same type, the suitable temperature for the growth is somewhat different
