    Adaptive Digital Scan Variable Pixels

The square and rectangular shape of the pixels in the digital images for sensing and display purposes introduces several inaccuracies in the representation of digital images. The major disadvantage of square pixel shapes is the inability to accurately capture and display the details in the objects having variable orientations to edges, shapes and regions. This effect can be observed by the inaccurate representation of diagonal edges in low resolution square pixel images. This paper explores a less investigated idea of using variable shaped pixels for improving visual quality of image scans without increasing the square pixel resolution. The proposed adaptive filtering technique reports an improvement in image PSNR.Comment: 4th International Conference on Advances in Computing, Communications and Informatics, August, 201

The Development of Student Conceptions of the Earth-Sun Relationship in an Inquiry-Based Curriculum

This investigation examined conceptual change in three fifth-grade students as they participated in a curriculum on Earth's surface temperature. Data were collected via individual interviews and classroom observations and interactions, and were analyzed by comparing the students' thinking at various points before, during and after the unit. Throughout the study, the students exhibited misconceptions identified in current literature as well as novel misconceptions of their own. Although the curriculum was found to be partially effective, the students retained some misconceptions with which they began the study, revealing that conceptual understanding may be more fragmentary than theory-like, and that the depth of one's prior knowledge affects how readily new knowledge is constructed. Examining the Relationship between Academic Success, Lifestyle Factors and Psychological Wellbeing: An Exploratory Study with University Students

This item is only available electronically. In Australia the government provides financial aid for eligible university students. However, after the consensus date has passed the government cannot withdraw this funding, despite there being a large number of students who are failing and withdrawing from their studies. Examining the factors that predict students’ academic success can be beneficial in providing tailored support services for students struggling academically, which in turn may reduce unnecessary government expenditure. The Big 5 Model of Personality, and Intellectual Ability on academic success have already been explored in the literature, but the impact of factors such as lifestyle and wellbeing on the achievement of university students have not been well researched. The present study aims to fill this gap. First year psychology students (N = 83, age M = 20) completed questionnaires that comprised of the OCEANIC scale, and the APM-short form to measure personality traits and intellectual ability respectively. Self-report information was also gained about the various lifestyle factors: alcohol and drugs, employment and primary caregiver hours, dietary habits, daytime sleepiness, physical activity; and also wellbeing: depression, anxiety and stress. Academic success was measured using the students’ final grade for their psychology course. As expected, conscientiousness, openness, and intellectual ability were found to be significant predictors of academic success. Surprisingly, physical activity showed a significant, negative correlation with final grade, and all other lifestyle and wellbeing factors demonstrated no significant associations with final grade. These results were unexpected but nonetheless demonstrate the need to further explore the predictors of academic success.Thesis (B.PsychSc(Hons)) -- University of Adelaide, School of Psychology, 201

Polysaccharide-specific memory B-cells predict protection against experimental human 1 pneumococcal carriage

RATIONALE: We have previously demonstrated that experimental pneumococcal carriage enhances immunity and protects healthy adults against carriage reacquisition following re-challenge with homologous strain. Here we have used a heterologous challenge model to investigate the role of naturally acquired pneumococcal protein and polysaccharide (PS)-specific immunity in protection against carriage acquisition. METHODS: We identified healthy volunteers that were naturally colonised with pneumococcus and, following clearance of their natural carriage episode, challenged them with a heterologous 6B strain. In another cohort of volunteers we assessed 6BPS-specific, PspA-specific and PspC-specific IgG and IgA plasma and memory B-cell populations prior to and 7, 14 and 35 days following experimental pneumococcal inoculation. RESULTS: Heterologous challenge with 6B resulted in 50% carriage among volunteers with previous natural pneumococcal carriage. Protection from carriage was associated with a high number of circulating 6BPS IgG-secreting memory B-cells at baseline. There were no associations between protection from carriage and baseline levels of 6BPS IgG in serum or nasal wash, PspA-specific or PspC-specific memory B-cells or plasma cells. In volunteers who did not develop carriage, the number of circulating 6BPS memory B-cells decreased and the number of 6BPS plasma cells 7 days post inoculation. CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that naturally acquired polysaccharide-specific memory B-cells, but not levels of circulating IgG at time of pneumococcal exposure, are associated with protection against carriage acquisition
