Among the transportation modes, road has always been the most preferred form of transport mode due to having advantage of the time required for the infrastructure. However, it has the highest share in the percentage of transportation-related emissions, noise and visual pollution, fatalities and accidents with injuries. Minimizing the adverse effects that caused by the road is always on the transport strategy of most of the developed and developing countries. It was agreed in the studies that the current demand and the adverse effects caused by the volume of road transport can be reduced by shifting demands to the other modes of transportation. Combined transportation taking into consideration the geographical conditions that contains a large part of the sea and railway in transport chain is the optimum solution for the transfer of road transport demand to greener mode. Turkey is in an advantageous position with its peninsular structure in terms of combined transport. Combined transportation with sea, rail and road could be utilized even for parallel transportation of goods. Although it has potential in Turkey, combined transportation has not developed much yet. In this study, short haul sea transport and combined transport mode as an alternative to highway transport mode, is compared with road transportation in terms of emissions, fuel consumption, transportation time, transportation costs and the advantages of combined transport are highlighte

In this study, Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves Method (MASW), Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) method, resistivity tomography and microgravity, together with the were used in Izmir - Turkey. By using these data, soil layer thickness, surface layer of the structural distribution of lateral, vertical direction, and the depth of bedrock were interpretated

Perception of male otolaryngologists on gender discrimination: a comparative study

    No full text
Purpose: To gather information on perception of male otolaryngologists (MORLs) about gender discrimination towards female otolaryngologists (FORLs). Methods: MORLs were invited to participate to an online survey. Minimum participation requirement was completion of at least their first year of residency. The responses were analyzed and compared vis-a-vis with the previously conducted similar survey among FORLs. Results: Statistically significant responses on the Likert scale are classified in four main groups. MORLs and FORLs share the same views about financial factors, benefits and opportunities, housework as burden, establishing work–life balance and physical strength requirements. They have opposing views about FORLs being meticulous, exposed to more negative attitude of the opposite gender and men’s dominance in decision-making. FORLs don’t have consensus, but MORLs disagree about MORLs being favored in pursuing academic careers. On the other hand, MORLs don’t have consensus, but FORLs agree about patients having more confidence in MORLs. Conclusion: MORLs don’t usually have any confrontation with FORLs in regards to the roles of women in the society such as their motherhood role. On the other hand, MORLs show rather a contradiction on their perception towards the gender discrimination mainly in achieving career goals by FORLs such as growing in the profession and holding managing roles. When the views of the both gender group are compared, MORLs don’t seem to fully acknowledge FORLs’ gender discrimination experience. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature

The Prospective Science Teachers' Perceptions of Biodiversity

This descriptive study aims to determine the perceptions of the prospective science teachers about biological diversity with a field trip organized to Abant Natural Park in Bolu/Turkey. Turkey is one of the most important countries having the richest biological diversity in Europe and Middle East. Sample of the study consists of 20 prospective science teachers. A field trip is organized for the research with five activities. The data were collected via five open ended questions and analyzed by qualitative method. According to the results of the study prospective science teachers should be educated about biodiversity. (C) 2013 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd
