    Quantum diffusion of microcavity solitons

    Coherently pumped (Kerr) solitons in an ideal optical microcavity are expected to undergo random quantum motion that determines fundamental performance limits in applications of the soliton microcombs. Here this random walk and its impact on Kerr soliton timing jitter are studied experimentally. The quantum limit is discerned by measuring the relative position of counter-propagating solitons. Their relative motion features weak interactions and also presents common-mode suppression of technical noise, which typically hides the quantum fluctuations. This is in contrast to co-propagating solitons, which are found to have relative timing jitter well below the quantum limit of a single soliton on account of strong correlation of their mutual motion. Good agreement is found between theory and experiment. The results establish the fundamental limits to timing jitter in soliton microcombs and provide new insights on multisoliton physics

    Recovery of dialysis patients with COVID-19 : health outcomes 3 months after diagnosis in ERACODA

    Background. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related short-term mortality is high in dialysis patients, but longer-term outcomes are largely unknown. We therefore assessed patient recovery in a large cohort of dialysis patients 3 months after their COVID-19 diagnosis. Methods. We analyzed data on dialysis patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from 1 February 2020 to 31 March 2021 from the European Renal Association COVID-19 Database (ERACODA). The outcomes studied were patient survival, residence and functional and mental health status (estimated by their treating physician) 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. Complete follow-up data were available for 854 surviving patients. Patient characteristics associated with recovery were analyzed using logistic regression. Results. In 2449 hemodialysis patients (mean ± SD age 67.5 ± 14.4 years, 62% male), survival probabilities at 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis were 90% for nonhospitalized patients (n = 1087), 73% for patients admitted to the hospital but not to an intensive care unit (ICU) (n = 1165) and 40% for those admitted to an ICU (n = 197). Patient survival hardly decreased between 28 days and 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis. At 3 months, 87% functioned at their pre-existent functional and 94% at their pre-existent mental level. Only few of the surviving patients were still admitted to the hospital (0.8-6.3%) or a nursing home (∼5%). A higher age and frailty score at presentation and ICU admission were associated with worse functional outcome. Conclusions. Mortality between 28 days and 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis was low and the majority of patients who survived COVID-19 recovered to their pre-existent functional and mental health level at 3 months after diagnosis

    In this study, novel condensed 1,4-dihydropyridines bearing cyclopentanone (1-21) or tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide ring (22-42) with various ester substituents were synthesized via a modified Hantzsch reaction and their calcium channel modulator activities were investigated on isolated rat ileum and rat thoracic aorta. The introduction of a cyclopentanone ring fused to the 1,4-dihydropyridine nucleus and methyl, ethyl and allyl moieties to the ester group led to more active calcium modulators

    Chronic pansinusitis is a mucosal inflammation of the nose and all paranasal sinuses with severe inflammation of the upper airways. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is associated with oxidative stress. In this study, we aimed to examine the plasma levels and importance of ADMA and nitric oxide (NO) in patients with chronic pansinusitis. The study was conducted with a total of 64 patients. The study group included a total of 40 patients with chronic pansinusitis. (18 females, 22 males) (mean age 32.27 ± 10.02). The control group consisted of 24 patients (11 females and 13 males). The mean age of the patients in the control group was 31.35 ± 6.05 years. Nasal endoscopic examinations were performed in patients with a history of chronic pansinusitis and symptoms of chronic pansinusitis. Later, the diagnosis of chronic pansinusitis was confirmed with coronal paranasal sinus Computed tomography scans. Plasma ADMA levels were measured by ELISA method and NO levels were measured by Griess method. Plasma ADMA and NO levels of the patients and healthy volunteers were measured and the mean plasma levels of the two groups were compared. ADMA levels were significantly higher in the group with chronic pansinusitis compared to the control group (1.23 ± 0.41 ?M and 0.28 ± 0.06 ?M, respectively) (p < 0.001), while NO levels were significantly lower in the patient group compared to the control group (7.06 ± 1.07 ?M and 12.25 ± 0.95, ?M, respectively) (p < 0.001). Our results show that the increase in ADMA levels and the decrease in NO levels are associated with chronic pansinusitis. According to these results, increased plasma levels of ADMA in chronic pansinusitis may be useful in clinical use as a sign of increased oxidative stress. © 2021, Association of Otolaryngologists of India.2019010The present study has been supported by Istanbul Rumeli University, through the Scientific Research Project no: 2019010
