The small genus Chrysophthalmum (tribe Inuleae) with four species, distributed over South-East Türkiye and Iran. While the chemistry of many genera of Inuleae group has been studied nothing is known about that of Chrysophthalmum. Different types of sesquiterpene lactones; guaianolides, eudesmanolides, germacranes, pseudo-guaianolides have been reported from Inula species which is the most close genus to Chrysophytalmum. Noteworthy, some of these sesquiterpene lactones showed cytotoxic, antibacterial, immunmodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities. In the course of a search for cytotoxic sesquiterpenes in the Asteraceae, we have examined C. montanum a plant on which extensive phytochemical studies have not been previously conducted and isolated four new [2-O-β-D-glucopyranoside-4α- hydroxy-guai-1(10)-en-12-8β-olide (1), 2-O-(6′-trans-caffeoyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside-4α-hydroxy-guai-1(10)-en-12-8β- olide (2), 4-O-β-D-glucopyra-noside-10β-hydroxy-guai-1 (2)-en-12-8β-olide (3) and 4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside-10β- hydroxy-guai-12-8β-olide (4)] and three known [2-Deoxypleniradin, 2-Deoxy-6-acetoxy-pleniradin, 4β, 10α- Dihydroxy-5αH-guai-1(2), 11(13)-dien-12,8α-olide] guaianolide type sesquiterpene lactones, along with the three methoxylated flavonoids and chlorogenic acid. The structures of these compounds were elucidated using spectroscopic methods (UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR and MS). We would like to thank TUBITAK (Grant No: 112S553) and Research foundation of Erciyes University (TCD-2012-4006) for financially supporting this project.</p
