    Quelques repùres d’une traductologie productive

    A Few Guidelines for Productive Translation Studies  The paper is based on the concept of “productive Translation Studies”, understood as a science of translation anchored in the present and designed to help both translators and translation scholars. To provide some directions for productive Translation Studies, the paper starts with a diachronic analysis of the discipline. The field acquired its autonomy in the 80s when it was no longer considered a branch of linguistics. Nevertheless, translation scholars have manifested some hesitations in the past and there are aspects to be rectified. To establish the aim and methodology of the discipline, a clear definition of translation (both as a process and as a product) is needed. In addition, the nature of Translation Studies should be discussed: whether they are a scientific field or a branch of humanities and to what extent they are interdisciplinary. This historical overview is also used to discuss the “ages” of Translation Studies, as defined by Jean-RenĂ© Ladmiral. Thus, prescriptive Translation Studies fix some general principles of a “good” translation and have a theoretical nature; descriptive Translation Studies rely on comparative and contrastive methods, analysing translation as a product; inductive Translation Studies aim at discovering what happens in the translator’s mind and are not developed yet; productive Translation Studies are connected to the reality of the market and provide methodological principles to translators and translation scholars to facilitate their work. In the final part of the paper, the author describes several strategies to be followed by contemporary Translation Studies. One step is to put an end to the scientific hesitations of the past and to have a coherent approach. Then, the debate concerning translation dichotomies (such as the possibility or impossibility of translation, faithfulness, and unfaithfulness in translation, translating form or translating meaning) should be left behind because it is unproductive. Connecting theory and practice and putting in contact with translators and translation scholars is another objective. Translation critics should give up the sacralization of the source text: in fact, any approach should put the translator on center stage to empower him/her. A double approach – psychological and sociological – may be needed to understand the translator’s choices: the psychological approach is based on the Theory of Sense, while the sociological analysis takes into consideration the constraints of the market. New technologies should become a topic of research. Also, translation studies should be rendered into various languages to disseminate new ideas and trends

    Protocol analysis modulo combination of theories: A case study in Maude-NPA

    There is a growing interest in formal methods and tools to analyze cryptographic protocols modulo algebraic properties of their underlying cryptographic functions. It is well-known that an intruder who uses algebraic equivalences of such functions can mount attacks that would be impossible if the cryptographic functions did not satisfy such equivalences. In practice, however, protocols use a collection of well-known functions, whose algebraic properties can naturally be grouped together as a union of theories E 1... Âż n. Reasoning symbolically modulo the algebraic properties E 1... Âż n requires performing (E 1... Âż n)-unification. However, even if a unification algorithm for each individual E i is available, this requires combining the existing algorithms by methods that are highly non-deterministic and have high computational cost. In this work we present an alternative method to obtain unification algorithms for combined theories based on variant narrowing. Although variant narrowing is less efficient at the level of a single theory E i, it does not use any costly combination method. Furthermore, it does not require that each E i has a dedicated unification algorithm in a tool implementation. We illustrate the use of this method in the Maude-NPA tool by means of a well-known protocol requiring the combination of three distinct equational theories. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.R. Sasse and J.     Rule-Based Unification in Combined Theories and the Finite Variant Property

    International audienceWe investigate the unification problemin theories defined by rewrite systems which are both convergent andforward-closed. These theories are also known in the context ofprotocol analysis as theories with the finite variant property andadmit a variant-based unification algorithm. In this paper, wepresent a new rule-based unification algorithm which can be seen as analternative to the variant-based approach. In addition, we defineforward-closed combination to capture the union of a forward-closedconvergent rewrite system with another theory, such as theAssociativity-Commutativity, whose function symbols may occur inright-hand sides of the rewrite system. Finally, we present acombination algorithm for this particular class of non-disjoint unionsof theories

    The hitchhiker's guide to decidability and complexity of equivalence properties in security protocols

    International audiencePrivacy-preserving security properties in cryptographic protocols are typically modelled by observational equivalences in process calculi such as the applied pi-calulus. We survey decidability and complexity results for the automated verification of such equivalences, casting existing results in a common framework which allows for a precise comparison. This unified view, beyond providing a clearer insight on the current state of the art, allowed us to identify some variations in the statements of the decision problems-sometimes resulting in different complexity results. Additionally, we prove a couple of novel or strengthened results

    Berman the Untranslatable

    The paper deals with the translation of the discourse pertaining to the field of Translation Studies. The case study under scrutiny is the chapter entitled “A Manifestation of Translation” in The Experience of the Foreign by Antoine Berman. We examine certain translation difficulties of Berman’s discourse and, in particular, the apparent untranslatability of key concepts of his work. Our approach starts with a general analysis of the translatability of Translation Studies works, which includes a review of the metalanguage. We then expose the fundamental principles of Berman’s philosophy in order to be able to identify, in the last part of the paper, the terminological and discursive challenges implied by the translation of Berman’s discourse.Notre travail est une rĂ©flexion sur la traduction du discours traductologique. Prenant comme Ă©tude de cas le chapitre « La traduction au manifeste » de l’Épreuve de l’étranger d’Antoine Berman, nous examinons les difficultĂ©s de traduction du discours bermanien et, en particulier, l’apparente intraduisibilitĂ© des concepts-clĂ©s de l’ouvrage. Notre dĂ©marche commence par un examen gĂ©nĂ©ral de la traduisibilitĂ© du discours traductologique, qui comprend une analyse des particularitĂ©s du mĂ©talangage. Par la suite, nous passons en revue les axes fondamentaux de la philosophie de Berman, pour identifier dans la derniĂšre partie les dĂ©fis d’ordre terminologique et discursifs de la traduction du discours bermanien
