    Impact of English Teachers´ Competencies on Students´ Learning and Achievement: Teachers’ and Students’ Perspectives in Private Secondary School (oberstufe) Education in the Federal State of Schleswig Holstein, Germany

    The paper aims to research how secondary school (German: Oberstufe) students perceive the quality of English teachers’ competencies in terms of their effect on students’ learning. Four major categories of teacher competencies (prescribed by the Ministry of Schleswig Holstein) were examined to discover the quality of teachers’ competencies as perceived by teachers on the one hand, and the effect of these competencies on students’ overall English language knowledge on the other. The ratings of teacher and student perceptions were quantitatively gathered in a survey using a five point Likert scale. Students’ responses were qualitatively collated and analysed as well. The findings show that more than half of the participating English teachers have negative opinion about the contribution of the related competencies to their professional identity and overall students´ knowledge, which was confirmed by the group of examined students. However, teacher training programs could benefit from the practical experiences of teachers and their suggestions while making adaptations in teacher training both at pre-service and in-service level.Publishe

In addition to project management computer programs that can be used for various projects, some programs have been developed specifically in the fashion and apparel industry.     Galactic Punctuated Equilibrium: How to Undermine Carter's Anthropic Argument in Astrobiology

    We investigate a new strategy which can defeat the (in)famous Carter's "anthropic" argument against extraterrestrial life and intelligence. In contrast to those already considered by Wilson, Livio, and others, the present approach is based on relaxing hidden uniformitarian assumptions, considering instead a dynamical succession of evolutionary regimes governed by both global (Galaxy-wide) and local (planet- or planetary system-limited) regulation mechanisms. This is in accordance with recent developments in both astrophysics and evolutionary biology. Notably, our increased understanding of the nature of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, as well as of strong coupling between the Solar System and the Galaxy on one hand, and the theories of "punctuated equilibria" of Eldredge and Gould and "macroevolutionary regimes" of Jablonski, Valentine, et al. on the other, are in full accordance with the regulation- mechanism picture. The application of this particular strategy highlights the limits of application of Carter's argument, and indicates that in the real universe its applicability conditions are not satisfied. We conclude that drawing far-reaching conclusions about the scarcity of extraterrestrial intelligence and the prospects of our efforts to detect it on the basis of this argument is unwarranted.Comment: 3 figures, 26 page

    In Vivo and In Vitro Virulence Analysis of Four Genetically Distinct Toxoplasma gondii Lineage III Isolates

    Toxoplasma gondii archetypes II and III are mildly virulent, yet virulence of variant strains is largely unknown. While lineage II dominates in humans in Europe, lineage III strains are present in various intermediate hosts. In Serbia, lineage III represents 24% of the population structure and occurs most frequently in domestic animals, implying a significant presence in the human food web. In this study, the virulence of four genetically distinct lineage III variants was assessed in vivo and in vitro. In vivo, two strains were shown to be intermediately virulent and two mildly virulent, with cumulative mortalities of 69.4%, 38.8%, 10.7%, and 6.8%, respectively. The strain with the highest mortality has previously been isolated in Europe and may be endemic; the strain with the lowest mortality matches ToxoDB#54, while the remaining two represent novel genotypes. Identical alleles were detected at ROP5, ROP16, ROP18, and GRA15. A set of in vitro analyses revealed proliferation and plaque formation as virulence factors. Higher levels of expression of ENO2 in intermediately virulent strains point to enhanced metabolism as the underlying mechanism. The results suggest that metabolic attenuation, and possibly stage conversion, may be delayed in virulent strains

    EMOTIONAL EFFECTS OF IMPLEMENTING GESTALT THERAPY TECHNIQUES IN UNIVERSITY TEACHING

    These articles are a result of the bilateral cooperation project ”Assumptions and possibilities of developing innovative models of teaching for accomplishing transparency of university education and for raising competitiveness in national and international knowledge markets”, carried out and financied by the University of Kragujevac, Faculty of Education, Jagodina (Republic of Serbia) and the University of Primorska, Faculty of Education, Koper (Republic of Slovenia), in the period 2017–2019.The aim of this paper was to examine the emotional effects of implementing Gestalt therapy techniques focused on the emotional experience triggered by the learning process. The sample consisted of 289 students, future teachers and preschool teachers. The research design implied an initial assessment of students’ emotional reactions to traditional, frontal teaching (4 lessons of Psychology and 4 English language lessons), an implementation of Gestalt therapy techniques in teaching (also 4 lessons in both subjects) and a final assessment of students’ emotional reactions. A Questionnaire for the self-assessment of emotional reactions to teaching by Shabot and Shabot was used for the collection of data. Statistically highly significant differences were found regarding the type and intensity of emotional reactions, in favour of the final assessment. Unpleasant emotional reactions such as anxiety, irritability, boredom and discouragement were highly significant (p<0.01) as reactions to traditional teaching, while pleasant emotional reactions of amazement, pleasure, optimism and self-confidence were highly significant (p<0.01) reactions to teaching in which Gestalt therapy techniques were implemented. Highly significant differences (p < 0.01) were found in the assessment of other aspects of teaching as well, such as involvement, connection and communication with others. The results indicate the significance of encouraging pleasant emotional reactions in the teaching process.Publishe

    STUDENTS’ ETHICS IN TASK‑BASED LEARNING DURING GROUP WORK

    The importance of knowing a foreign language in the 21st century entails global and cultural approach, i.e. it implicates the importance of developing, spreading and balancing Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) in the global aspect. As such, this paper investigates two major areas of learning: 1) Task‑Based Language Learning (TBLL) and 2) group work activities and students’ ethics when conducting activities. The analysis of the collected data made it possible to identify the factors promoting or hindering English Language Learning (ELL) achievements via TBL; to understand the role of collaborative work; to analyze EL problem areas; and to propose practical suggestions in order to improve the quality of Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) and the 21st century general education. This paper is significant as it leads to the recommendation that Foreign Language Teaching and Foreign Language Learning processes need to emphasize TBLL, group work activities, problem solving skills, and the ability to apply global cultural knowledge in dealing with the 21st real‑life issues.Publishe

    POSSIBLE WAYS OF ORGANIZING FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING USING LANGUAGE TRANSFER

    The main focus of this paper is to examine the role of English as the first foreign language (FL1) in learning German as a second foreign language (FL2) at the university level. The results will provide insight into the possibilities of improving foreign language teaching at tertiary level. More specifically, the aim of this research is to find out to what extent Serbian students, whose mother tongue is Serbian, rely on their knowledge of English as the FL1 while learning German as the FL2. The research was done with first year students (N=140) from the departments class teacher, pre-school teacher and boarding school teacher at the Faculty of Education in Jagodina. A comparative study of positive and negative transfer of English in the process of learning German will be presented in the paper. The paper will outline specific strategies that could be of great help in learning the foreign language, as well as the ideas for the higher education quality improvement. In addition, the authors will point out different issues of cross-linguistic influence in language learning and suggest some ideas for practice improvement in this area.Publishe

    Biofilm formation of achromobacter xylosoxidans on contact lens

    Achromobacter spp. may contaminate lenses, lens cases, and contact lens solutions and cause ocular infections. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of isolated strain of Achromobacter xylosoxidans to form biofilm on the surface of soft contact lenses (CL), to quantify the production of the formed biofilm, and compare it with the reference strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Haemophilus influenzae). Bacterial strain isolated from one contact lens case was identified as A. xylosoxidans using Vitek2 Automated System. Biofilm forming capacity of isolated strain of A. xylosoxidans and reference strains of P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and H. influenzae on soft CL were analyzed by commonly used microtitre plate method. Our results showed that isolated strain of A. xylosoxidans was capable to form biofilm on the surface of soft contact lens. A. xylosoxidans was strong biofilm producer while all examined reference strains were moderate biofilm producers. A. xylosoxidans appears to be superior biofilm producer on soft CL compared to reference strains
