The effect of different salts and stress on some physiological parameters in rats
Genel Bilgiler: Tuz, yaşam için gerekli besinlerden biridir. Sodyum klorür (NaCl) ekstraselüler sıvı hacmini belirleyen faktördür. Ayrıca kan basıncının düzenlenmesinde görev alır. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü (WHO), tüm dünyada tuz alımının 5gr’ın altında olmasını önermektedir. Yüksek tuz alımı, direkt olarak kan basıncını arttırarak inme, sol ventrikül hipertrofisi ve böbrek hastalıkları üzerine negatif etki eder. Stres, günümüzde yaşamın ayrılmaz bir parçasıdır. Stres durumu, fizyolojik fonksiyonları bozarak birçok hastalığa neden olur. Stres hipertansiyon, koroner kalp hastalıkları, gastrik ülser, diyabet ve hafıza kaybı gibi birçok hastalığa neden olur. Çalışmamızda, normal ve kronik hareketsizlik stresi oluşturulmuş ratlarda farklı tuz tiplerinin bazı fizyolojik parametreler üzerine etkisini belirlemeyi amaçladık.
Materyal – Metod: 97 adet erkek Wistar albino sıçan (3-4 aylık, 250-350gr) 13 gruba ayrılmıştır. Tuzlar gastrik gavaj yoluyla verildi (1 ml/gün).
Anj-I, Anj-II ve ACE değerlerinde azalma meydana gelmiştir.
Background: Salt is one of the nutrients necessary for life. Sodium chloride (NaCl) is the factor that determines the extracellular fluid volume. It is also involved in the regulation of blood pressure. The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests that salt intake should be less than 5 grams all over the world. High salt intake directly raises blood pressure which has negative effects on progress of stroke, left ventricular hypertrophy and renal disease. Today, stress is an integral part of the life. Stress causes many diseases such as; hypertension, coronary heart diseases, gastric ulcers, diabetes and memory loss with disrupting of the physiological functions. In our study we aimed to determinate effects of different types of salts on some physiological parameters on normal and chronic restraint stressed rats.
Material and Methods: Ninety seven 3-4 month old Wistar Albino male (3-4 months) rats weighing an avarege of 250-350 gr were randomly divided into 13 groups. Salts were given by gastric gavage (1 ml/day). Before and after experimental period, blood pressure parameters and body weights were measured. After experimental period mRNA, biochemical and histopathologic parameters were studied.
Results: Blood pressure increased in salt and stress applied groups. Kidney and heart tissue damages have been occurred and Anj-I, Anj-II and ACE values decreased in the same groups.
Conclusion: According to our results, we can say that to use rock salt and himalayan salt which have low sodium content have more advantages than other salts for health. Especially, we can note that the use of rock salt should be kept in the forefront.Bu tez Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Bilimsel Araştırma Projeleri Komisyonu 2014-41 proje numarası ile desteklenmiştir

THE LOAD FOR THE WINGATE TEST: ACCORDING TO THE BODY WEIGHT OR LEAN BODY MASS
Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine if it was more
appropriate assignment of the load of the Wingate test according to the
lean body mass in young males. Methods: Wingate tests were performed on
a Monark cycle ergometer by using loads of 75, 85, 95 g.kg-1 for the
body weight and 90, 100, 110 g.kg-1 for the lean body mass on 24
untrained young males. These loads were applied randomly to the
participants. Pedal revolutions for every 5-second were counted during
the test and the peak power, the mean power and the fatigue index were
calculated. Results: The peak power outputs of the Wingate tests in
which 100 and 110 g.kg-1 loads were used for the lean body mass were
significantly higher than the peak power outputs obtained from the
tests in which 75 g.kg-1 loads were used for the body weight. None of
the mean power outputs obtained from the loads was significantly higher
than the others. Conclusion: We concluded that assignment of the load
of the Wingate test according to the lean body mass would be more
appropriate in young males. 100 or 110 g.kg-1 loads for the lean body
mass can be used as they result in significantly higher peak power
outputs
Comparison of body fat percentage measured by bioelectrical ımpedance analysis and anthropometric methods
Objective: The aim of this study was compari¬son of body fat percentages measured by bioelectrical imped¬ance analysis (BIA) and skinfold thicknesses methods. Material and Methods: A total of 180 people, 90 females (18-60 years old) and 90 males (18-55 years old), were in¬cluded in the study. Body fat percentage was measured by two methods: BIA and anthropometric methods. First meas¬urements were done using BIA (Bodystat 1500) method as follows; people who participated in this study were asked to lie on supine position, and then the electrodes of BIA device were placed on the right hand and foot to take the measure¬ment for body fat percentage. The measurements were taken and recorded for each person. Secondly, body fat percentage was measured by anthropometric methods. Thickness of ab¬domen, triceps, thigh, subscapular skinfold were measured by Skinfold caliper (Floltain). Body density was estimated using Behnke VVilmore and Dumin Womersley equations based on the skinfold measurements. Body fat percentage was esti¬mated with Siri or Brozek equations using the body density values obtained. The results were analyzed statistically by Pearson’s correlation.
Results: Mean body mass index (BMI) was not different between women (25.8±6.0) and men (24.2±3.3) (p=0.27). The mean values for body fat percentage were found as 21.8± 10.9, 23.0±8.6, 23.6±6.9 by BIA, Behnke Wilmore and Dumin Womersley respectively. Strong correlations were observed between the body fat percentage values obtained by BIA and Behnke Wilmore (r= 0.835, p<0.001), BIA and Dumin Womersley (r=0.777, p<0.001), Behnke Wilmore and Dumin Womersley (r=0.935, p<0.001).
Conclusion: Our data suggest that BIA method can be used for the estimation of body fat percentage instead of Behnke Wilmore and Dumin Womersley equations based on skinfold measurements
Comparison of power outputs of wingate tests applied with loads determined from body weight and lean body mass: (Comparison of power outputs of wingate test with different loads)
Objective: Classically, body vveight has been used for load determination of the Wingate test. The purpose of this study was to compare power outputs of the Wingate test in which loads were determined by two different formulas based on either body vveight or lean body mass.
Material and Methods: Sixty males (18-59 years old) volunteered to take part in the study. Body fat percentage and lean body mass were measured by bioelectrical im- pedance analysis (Bodystat 1500). The loads for the Win- gate test were 75 g per body weight (load-1), 95 g per body vveight (load-2) and 95 g per lean body mass (load- 3). The Wingate test was performed on a Monark 839 cy- cle ergometer and pedal revolutions were counted by an electronic counter with resolution of 1/12. Tests were performed at least with one day interval in betvveen. Pedal revolutions were recorded for each 5 second during the 30 second total period. The peak power (PP), the mean power (MP) and the fatigue index (FI) outputs of each Wingate tests were determined. Results were statistically analyzed by “Friedman’s variance analyzes” and “Wilcoxon test”.
Results: The mean loads obtained were 5.2±0.5 kg for load-1, 6.6±0.7 kg for load-2, 5.7±0.6 kg for load-3 and signifıcant differences were found betvveen the mean loads for ali three measurements (p<0.001). PP and MP values of the Wingate tests obtained from load-2 and load-3 vvere signifıcantly higher than PP and MP values of the Wingate tests obtained from load-1, respectively (p<0.001). The FI values of load-2 were greater than the one obtained from load-3 (p=0.035). Similarly, the FI values of load-3 was higher than the FI values of load-1 (p=0.026).
Conclusion: Our data suggest that load-3 can be used in- stead of load-1 in the Wingate test. Lean body mass can be measured by a cheap and simple method. Size of muscleindependent load determination from body fat percentage for the Wingate test. In addition, further investigations should be carried out to optimize the loads to be determined from lean body mass for highest power outputs for the Wingate test

fiziksel aktivite anketi ve SF-36 yaşam kalitesi anketi uygulandı.
Uluslararası fiziksel aktivite anketi ile haftalık şiddetli
ve orta dereceli fiziksel aktivite ve yürüme süreleri ve günlük
oturma süresi belirlendi. SF-36’nın fiziksel ve mental
sağlık skorları hesaplandı. Katılımcıların toplam fiziksel
aktivite süresi hesaplandı ve ‘düşük, orta ve yüksek düzey’
biçiminde sınıflandırıldı. Vücut kütle indeksi (VKİ), boy ve
kilodan formülle hesaplandı.
Bulgular: VKİ, şiddetli aktivite, orta dereceli aktivite,
toplam fiziksel aktivite, SF36-fiziksel ve mental sağlık
skorları erkeklerde kadınlardan yüksek bulundu. Erkek ve
kadınların düşük, orta ve yüksek fiziksel aktivite düzeylerindeki
yüzde değerler arasında istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı
fark bulundu.
Objective: The aims of this study were to inquire the
physical activity and quality of life differences between
male and female young adults and to investigate associations
among these parameters.
Material and Methods: International physical activity
questionnaire (short form) and life quality questionnaire
(SF-36) were applied to a total of 710 (387 female, 323
male) volunteer young adults. Weekly vigorous and
moderate physical activity and walking times and daily
sitting times were determined with using international
physical activity questionnaire. Physical and mental health
scores of SF-36 were calculated. Total physical activity
times of participants were calculated and then classified as
low, moderate and high. Body mass index (BMI) was
calculated with formula using height and weight.
Results: BMI, vigorous physical activity, moderate physical
activity, total physical activity, SF-36 physical and mental
health score were found higher in males than in females. In
terms of physical activity level, there were statistically
significant differences among the percentages of males and
females shown as low, moderate, and high. Only, vigorous
physical activity time showed mild positive correlations
with SF-36 physical health score.
Conclusion: Total physical activity being found higher in
males compared to the one in females, may contribute to the
higher quality of life in males. Because of vigorous and
moderate physical activity differences between in males and
in females excluding weekly walking time, total physical
activity was found different in males and females. Usually,
vigorous and moderate physical activities are enjoyable team
activity. These enjoyable vigorous and moderate physical
activities may be proposed to increase quality of life in
young females
Significant features of basal and maximal energy expenditure parameters in obese adults
Aim: To compare body composition, resting metabolic rate, and maximal aerobic capacity parameters in obese adults and healthy controls, as well as to investigate the associations among these parameters. Materials and methods: A total of 120 participants, 60 obese participants (30 male, 30 female) with body mass indexes (BMIs) over 30 kg/m(2) and 60 healthy controls (30 male, 30 female) with BMIs of 18-25 kg/m(2), were included in the study. BMI was calculated as body weight divided by the square of the height (kg/m2). Body fat percentage, total body fat, and lean body mass were established with bioelectric impedance analysis. Resting metabolic rates (RMRs) were determined with indirect calorimeter. Maximal aerobic capacity was estimated with the Astrand exercise protocol. Results: RMRs (kcal/day) were significantly higher in male and female obese individuals than in the controls. VO2 max (L/min) levels were not significantly different between obese and control individuals of either sex. However, RMR per kilogram of body weight and VO2 max expressed in milliliters per kilogram of body weight were significantly lower in male and female obese adults compared to the controls. BMI, body fat percentage, and total body fat were positively correlated with RMR (kcal/day), but negatively correlated with RMR [(kcal/day)/kg] and VO2 max (mL/kg/min) in both sexes. Conclusion: We suggest that resting and maximal energy expenditure per kilogram of body weight are impaired in obese adults. Both low resting metabolic rate and weak maximal aerobic capacity are related to excess body fat in obese subjects
Resting Metabolic Rate and Anthropometric Measurements in Male Sleep Apnea Patients
Objective Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder. Associations among Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), body habitus differences, and otorhinolaryngologic abnormality may clarify the characteristics of patients with OSAS. In order to test this hypothesis, we aimed to compare the RMR, Modified Mallampati Scores (MMS), anthropometric measurements and body composition of male OSAS patients with simple snorers and to investigate the association among these parameters
Investigation of daily physical activity, anxiety and depression in patients with cholelithiasis
Objective: The aims of this study were to inquire the daily
physical activity, anxiety and depression parameter differences
between patients with cholelithiasis and healthy
controls and to investigate associations among these parameters.
Material and Methods: Volunteer patients with
cholelithiasis (29 female) and healthy controls (30 female)
were included in the study. International physical activity
questionnaire (IPAQ) (short form), Beck depression inventory
(BDI) and Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) were applied to all
participants. Weekly vigorous and moderate physical activity
and walking times as well as daily sitting times were
determined with using IPAQ. Total physical activity times of
participants were calculated and then classified as low,
moderate and high.
Results: Durations of walking and total physical activity
were found lower in patients with cholelithiasis than the
ones in healthy controls. In terms of percentage values of
low, moderate and high physical activity levels, there were
statistically significant differences between the patients
with cholelithiasis and healthy controls (p<0,001). There
were no statistically significant differences regarding BAI
and BDI values between the patients with cholelithiasis and
healthy controls.
Conclusion: Total physical activity and walking durations
and physical activity level was found lower in patients with
cholelithiasis compared to the healthy controls, which may
suggest a possible role for low physical activity in the formation
of cholelithiasis. We propose that incorporating
regular exercise programs into daily life may be used as a
supportive treatment method for protection from
cholelithiasis
