    Get PDF
Introduction: Clear cell meningioma is an infrequent, agressive variant of meningioma that shows proclivity to the spine. This study aimed to report a case of clear cell meningioma of the lumbar spine and discuss the differential diagnosis, and emphasize the necessity and usefulness of immunohistochemistry for definite diagnosis.Case report: A 23-year-old man admitted to the Department of Neurosurgery with backache existed for about 4 years. Magnetic Resonance Imaging revealed a well-circumscribed intradural and extramedullary mass in the spinal canal at the 5th lumbar vertebra extending to the right neural foramen. The lesion was excised gross totally and diagnosed as “clear cell meningioma”. The patient has been doing well for a year without any sign of recurrence.Discussion: Clear cell meningioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the masses located in the spine radiologically. In addition, the histopathological mimickers of it that are composed of clear cells, particularly renal cell carcinoma, should be ruled out by the aid of immunohistochemistry

    Get PDF
Changing climates threaten the habitats and ecosystems at variable extents throughout the world. Forests are unique habitats and ecosystems that are vulnerable by the consequences of climate change. The climate change causes disturbances, alterations. and shifting on the forests that can be diagnosed at the tree and stand scales, as well as can be monitored and analyzed at the landscape scale. Furthermore, some recent researches concentrate on conveying the forest tree and stand-level shifting and disturbances to the forest landscape level by upscaling. In this study, the climate change impacts on the forest landscapes; principally, the disturbances including the drought-induced mortality, growth and productivity failures, and insect outbreaks are evaluated. Secondarily, climate change-induced alterations of the forest species distributions and forest landscape compositions, dynamics of the forest biodiversity, and tree migrations are discussed by focusing particularly on the relatively recent advances involving the modeling procedures. Ultimately, monitoring the climate change-driven shifting phenology of the forest landscape through the remote sensing techniques is referred in this study. Moreover, the study examples dependent upon the climate-ecological modeling and satellite data assessment of the forest landscapes throughout the world are also referenced. The landscape-scale assessment of the climate change impacts on the forest ecosystems provides integrated and comprehensive approach toward the proposal of sustainable mitigations and solutions to the phenomenon

Pigmented Bowen’s Disease of the Genitalia Masquerading as Malignant Melanoma

    Get PDF
Abstract Pigmented Bowen’s disease is a rare subtype of in situ squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and mucosa, with a potential risk of invasion and metastasis. It is universally accepted that human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of genital Bowen’s disease. Herein we report an unusual case of pigmented Bowen’s disease of the genital area that clinically simulated malignant melanoma. Accurate diagnosis could only be established after histological examination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis showed that the lesion harbored HPV 16 DNA. Although pigmented Bowen’s disease is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all pigmented lesions of the genitalia. This case report highlights the necessity of biopsy and histopathological examination for every suspicious cutaneous lesion.  Key words: pigmented Bowen’s disease; human papillomavirus </p

In this study, it is aimed to examine the effect of classroom assessment on science and mathematics achievements. For this purpose, hierarchi-cal linear modeling (HLM) is performed using variables of like learning science/maths, engage teaching in science/maths, confidence in science/maths, and home resources for learning variables at the student level, and experience, education level, homework, and assessment at the teacher level. The sample of the study consists of 4th grade students who participated in TIMSS 2015 in Turkey. According to the findings; 36% of variance in science achievement, and 40% of variance in mathematics achievement are due to variability between classes. In a random coef-ficient model, all student variables were found to be statistically significant predictors of science and mathematics achievement. Among these variables, the greatest effect size is self-confidence variability. Only the teacher variables are added according to the Means as the outcome model; the teacher’s experience and emphasis to national achievement tests of monitoring students’ progress had a statistically significant effect on science and mathematics achievement. Finally, according to the intercept and slopes of the outcomes model, the most important variable is the emphasis to national achievement tests of monitoring students’ progress in both science and mathematics
