Evaluation of phytotherapeutic activities and phytochemical content of Phormidium autumnale Gomont from natural freshwater sources
The information available on microalgae-sourced compounds, especially antibiotics and other bioactive compounds, and their potential commercial applications is still insufficient. In this study, antibacterial activity, metabolites, and molecular characterization of Phormidium autumnale, which was isolated from samples collected from different natural freshwater sources in Ankara, Turkey, were investigated. Sequencing results of 16s rDNA confirmed the molecular identification of P. autumnale by 99%. It was determined that the peak values of some phenolic compounds and cyclic peptides were consistent with the 1653-1389 cm(-1) band regions in the FTIR spectra of the species. The antibacterial activities of P. autumnale cyanobacteria (CBA) extracts that were obtained by using different solvents were tested on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, methicillin-resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Enterococcus faecalis by using a disc diffusion method. Also, the minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) and antimicrobial indexes of all extracts were determined. It was found that P. autumnale methanol extracts showed antibacterial activity on all test bacteria, whereas acetone extracts showed effects only on E. coli. For the inhibition of MR S. aureus, the control methanol extract was found to give very similar results to those exhibited by the control antibiotics, and the antimicrobial index results were determined to be 58.7-67.5%. According to the results of the analysis of methanol extract, gentisic acid, vanillic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, and catechin (especially phenolic compounds) were determined to be the active compounds. It can be concluded that P. autumnale is an alternative to current commercial applications as an antibacterial agent in phytotherapy

Some physical properties of Cd1-xSnxS films used as window layer in heterojunction solar cells
2nd National Solar and Hydrogen Energy Congress -- JUN 12-13, 2008 -- Eskisehir, TURKEYWOS: 000267974500015CdS has been proved to be an ideal material for use as the window layer for heterojunction solar cells especially with n-CdS/p-CdTe. CdS, Cd0.9Sn0.1S and Cd0.8Sn0.2S films were deposited onto glass substrates at 300 degrees C substrate temperature by using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis technique (USP). The effect of Sri concentration on some structural, optical and electrical properties of the films was presented. The crystal structure and orientation of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. XRD patterns showed that films have polycrystalline nature with a hexagonal structure. The grain size of the films decreased with increasing x values. The optical band gap values were obtained from optical absorption spectra of the films. The optical band gap values of the films were found to be between 2.44 and 2.45 eV. The variations of conductivity of Cd1-xSnxS (0 <= x <= 0.2) films have been investigated depending on applied voltage in dark and under illumination. The resistivity significantly decreased with increasing tin concentration and under illumination.Atayurt Educ Inst, Cagfen Educ Inst, Eskisehir Osmangazi Univ, Odunpazari Municipal, Tepebasi Municipal, Teme
Pulse inversion harmonic imaging compared with conventional b-mode ultrasound in the evaluation of pancreatic masses
The aim of this study was to evaluate the masses of the pancreas with pulse inversion harmonic imaging mode ultrasonography and to compare diagnostic image quality of the conventional B-mode ultrasonography. METHODS: Twelve cases who had suspicion of pancreatic masses ranging from ages 45-83 years, conventional Bmode ultrasound and pulse inversion harmonic imaging examinations were performed. Keeping the examination parameters of ultrasound images obtained from the same plane were recorded. Assessments were performed independently by two observers. In terms of the overall image quality, lesion conspicuity and fluid–solid differentiation of the ultrasound images were evaluated by using 4-point subjective scale (0; very poor, 3; very good). Upper abdominal biphasic contrast-enhanced thin-section CT, MRI and / or MRCP examinations were obtained in patients with a pancreatic mass which were determined by ultrasonography. After operation, ERCP or biopsy, all of cases were diagnosed histopathologically. RESULTS: Histopathologic diagnosis were made as pancreatic ca in nine patients, pseudocyst in two patients and metastatic adenocarcinoma in one patients. Pulse inversion harmonic imaging mode proved to be significantly superior to conventional B-mode ultrasound regarding overall image quality (p <0.01). Lesion conspicuity and fluid– solid differentiation was significantly higher in pulse inversion harmonic imaging mode than conventional Bmode ultrasound (p <0.01). CONCLUSION: Because of better the image quality, higher the contrast of fluid–solid differentiation and improve of the lesion conspicuity, pulse inversion harmonic imaging is more superior modality than conventional B-mode ultrasound in patients with pancreatic mass
Vibrational and morphological properties of Sn-doped CdS films deposited by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method
WOS: 000208229200004Cd1-chi Sn chi S films (chi=0.0, 0.1 and 0.2) were prepared by the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) method on the glass substrate at 300 degrees C. Effect of Sn doping on the vibrational and morphological properties of CdS films has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy. The SEM and AFM measurements showed that the surface morphology of the films was affected by the tin incorporation. The Raman (200-700 cm(-1)) and FT-IR (400-4000 cm(-1)) spectra of Cd1-chi Sn chi S were recorded. The Raman spectrum for Cd1-chi Sn chi S films is dominated by an intense band at 300 cm(-1), assigned to the first-order longitudinal optic phonon and the second-order phonon peak 599 cm . The absorption peaks in the FT-IR spectra of Cd1-chi Sn chi S located at 540-700 and 1004-1045 cm(-1) can be assigned to the Cd-S and C-O stretching frequencies, respectively. Raman and FT-IR spectra shows decrease in the peak intensity with increasing Sn concentratio
