3D Born-Infeld gravity and supersymmetry
We construct the most general parity-even higher-derivative N = 1 off-shell supergravity model in three dimensions with a maximum of six derivatives. Excluding terms quadratic in the curvature tensor with two explicit derivatives and requiring the absence of ghosts in a linearized approximation around an AdS(3) background, we find that there is a unique supersymmetric invariant which we call supersymmetric 'cubic extended' New Massive Gravity. The purely gravitational part of this invariant is in agreement with an earlier analysis based upon the holographic c-theorem and coincides with an expansion of Born-Infeld gravity to the required order. Our results lead us to propose an expression for the bosonic part of off-shell N = 1 Born-Infeld supergravity in three dimensions that is free of ghosts. We show that different truncations of a perturbative expansion of this expression gives rise to the bosonic part of (i) Einstein supergravity; (ii) supersymmetric New Massive Gravity and (iii) supersymmetric 'cubic extended' New Massive Gravity.</p

The effect of nonconformities encountered in the use of technology on the occurrence of collision, contact and grounding accidents
Technology and its innovative applications make life easier and reduce the workload on seafarers. Today's ship bridges have much more modern and integrated navigation systems than before, and the ship's handling and management have become much easier. However, nonconformities encountered in the use of technological devices may cause accidents. In this study, the effect of human factor related errors associated with the use of the bridge's electronic navigational devices on grounding and collision-contact accidents was investigated. Non-conformities obtained from 175 collision-contact and 115 grounding accident reports were qualitatively analysed by means of human factor analysis and a classification system. Afterwards, relationships between nonconformities and their probabilities were evaluated quantitatively via a Bayesian network method. As a result of the study, the accident network was revealed. This accident network summarizes how operating errors in the use of technological equipment cause accidents. Recommendations on the prevention of accidents caused by operating errors associated with the use of new technologies are finally given
Degradation of various fruit juice anthocyanins by hydrogen peroxide
Degradation kinetics of anthocyanins was studied in sour cherry nectar, pomegranate and strawberry juices at high hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) concentrations (9.31-27.92 mmol l-1) at 10-30°C and in only sour cherry nectar at low H2O2 concentrations (0.23-2.33 mmol l-1) at 20°C. Degradation of anthocyanins followed the first-order reaction kinetics. Sour cherry anthocyanins were the most resistant to H2O2, followed by pomegranate and strawberry anthocyanins. Degradation of anthocyanins was also studied in sour cherry nectar and pomegranate juice in the presence of ascorbic acid at 60 and 80 mg l-1 concentrations at 20°C. At 80 mg level, ascorbic acid significantly accelerated the degradation of anthocyanins in sour cherry nectar at 4.65, 6.98 and 9.31 mmol l-1 H2O2 concentrations. In contrast, ascorbic acid at both 60 and 80 mg levels protected the anthocyanins from degradation by H2O2 in pomegranate juice.Ankara University Research Funds (Grant # 98.11.12.01
Emergence of Afro-Turks in Turkish Politics
Since the mid-2000s, Turkey’s almost forgotten and invisible Africa-rooted Turkish citizens, the Afro-Turks, have come to the surface. Because of their small number, they have never been conspicuous before. However, since 2003, with Turkey’s opening to Africa policy, they have become much more discernable in the Turkish public sphere with festivals and activities. Ankara has also officially supported their activities financially and technically. This article argues that there is a strong link between their emergence as an ethnic minority in Turkey and Ankara’s assertive Africa policy to deepen relations with the continent. The case of Afro-Turks indicates that when foreign policy inclination is matched with domestic policy, even a tiny minority can become more discernable and visible in the political arena
Designing a decision support system for debt payment planning under inflation
Ankara : Department of Industrial Engineering and the Institute of Engineering and sciences of Bilkent University, 1994.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 1994.Includes bibliographical refences.Computer technology has been developed very rapidly in recent years and now
computers are even replacing human in some areas. Use of judgment, however,
is still very important in many other fields. Financial management is one of
the areas that need managerial judgment and intuition while making decisions.
In this study, we propose a methodology for designing a system to assist the
decision maker (DM) in using his judgment to make effective decisions. The
system also has to facilitate and enhance learning since judgment is excelled
by experience. We specificly analyze decisions regarding the Debt Payment
Planning (DPP) problem. This problem, which may be briefly stated as ‘development
of an operational plan for the liquidation of debts’, is a new problem
and does not exist in the literature. The analyses are conducted keeping in
mind that the uncertainty of the financial environment and burden of inflation
increase the complexity of the decisions. A model which we call, ‘Growth
Model of Debt’ will be used in the analyses and a sample session will be shown
to provide a clear understanding of the system operation.Özkan, MehmetM.S
Seeding and gold medal probability in wrestling: a 2016 Rio Olympic Games analysis
The United World Wrestling carried out the implementation of seeding athletes for the first time at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. For this reason, the aim of the current study was to calculate the probability of winning a medal and becoming an Olympic Champion at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games of seeded wrestlers using the Bayesian theorem. The data were obtained from the results book of the Rio Olympic Games. The obtained data were analyzed Bayesian theorem. According to the results, the probabilities of being an Olympic Champion of first seeded wrestlers were 67.0%, 81.0% and 62.0% for males Greco-Roman, freestyle and female freestyle, respectively. As a result, being a seeded athlete had a great advantage to become an Olympic Champion in the wrestling competitions of the Rio Olympic Games. As the Olympic Games are held every four years, the medals in the Grand Prix tournaments, continental, and World Championships must be scored according to difficulty grade and medal colour, and the Olympic ranking should be established for each weight category. Furthermore, it would provide more competitive, challenging and enjoyable Olympic Games for wrestling and spectators
Environmental Sustainability Scale for Children 60-72 Months Old: A Validity and Reliability Study
In recent years, the importance of sustainability has been realized with ever-increasing environmental issues. The preschool period is the most appropriate time for developing an awareness of sustainability as children acquire basic habits during this period and maintain these habits throughout their lives. This study was aimed at developing a scale to evaluate environmental sustainability behaviors in children aged 60-72 months. The validity and reliability study of the scale was limited to 60-72-month-old preschool children, the 2017-2018 academic year and Istanbul (Kadıkoy and Besiktas districts), Kutahya and Yalova provinces. The total number of participants was 426. The 41 scale items developed by the researchers were submitted to six field specialists for review, and the scale was finalized in accordance with the Lawshe method prior to commencing validity and reliability studies. The study data were gathered with the Environmental Sustainability Scale for Children aged 60-72 Months that comprised 2 factors and 20 items. The factor structure of the scale was determined after a theoretical literature review and peer-debriefing. First and second order confirmatory factor analyses were performed for the construct finalized after peer-debriefing. In the reliability study, internal consistency was examined, and the Cronbach’s alpha was computed as .92. In conclusion, the study results indicated that the scale was a valid and reliable evaluation instrument
Ekonomik büyüme ve borsa getirisi arasındaki ilişki: Türkiye örneği
Financial development is one of the most important determinants of the economic development. Financial developments in Turkey began in the early 1980s and still have continued. During this period, it has survived a severe interaction between financial development and economic growth. In this study, the causality relationship between stock returns and economic growth in Turkey it was analysed over the period 1998Q2-2014Q2. In this context; firstly, Bootstrapped Toda-Yamamoto and Frequency Domain causality tests were applied in order to understand the causality relationship between the two variables. As a result of the Bootstrapped Toda-Yamamoto causality test results, there is no relation of causality between the variables, but according to Frequency Domain causality test stock returns cause the economic growth in short term and economic growth cause stock returns in medium term.
