    Lethal effect of Turkish diatomaceous earth (Bgn-1 ) agaınst adults of German cockroaches (Blatella germanıca L.): Presentation

    In this study, mortality effects of BGN-1 which is local diatomaceous earths, were investigated against adults of German cockroach (Blatella gemanica (L.)) on concrete, ceramic floor tile and laminate flooring. On these three different surfaces, B. germanica adults were exposed to BGN-1 diatomaceous earth at the doses of 2.5, 5, 10, 20 g/m2 along 6 days. In all surface applications of BGN-1 diatomaceous earth, exposure time and dose caused significant effect on mortality rates of B. germanica adults. It was determined that BGN-1 coded Turkish diatomaceous earth has the lowest mortality effect on all application surfaces at the dose of 2.5 g/m2. 2.5 g/m2 BGN-1 caused 100 % mortality after 6 days concrete surface and caused 100 % mortality at the end of the fourth day on ceramic floor tile and laminate flooring. On the other hand, doses of 5 and 10 g/m2 of BGN-1 caused 100% B. germanica mortality on all surfaces at the end of the second day, while the highest dose of 20 g /m2 of BGN-1 reached 100% B. germanica mortality at the end of the first day on all application surfaces. In general, the mortality activity of BGN-1 diatomites against B. germanica adults was found to be similar on all three surfaces. At the end of this study, local diatomaceous earth coded BGN-1 was found to be good alternatives for controlling B. germanica which is a medical pest insect

    Childhood Nasal Foreign Bodies: Analysis of 1724 Cases

    Objective:This study evaluates the characteristics of the foreign bodies removed from the nose, the treatment methods used, and the complications associated with the foreign body, and discusses the reports in the literature.Methods:Age, gender, type of foreign body, side of nose, clinical symptoms, complaints, diagnosis and treatment methods were retrospectively evaluated in all 1724 pediatric patients with foreign bodies.Results:Of the 1724 patients, 841 (48.7%) were female and 883 (51.3%) were male. Their mean age was 4.3±3.06 years (age range: 4 months-16 years). Foreign body was found on the right side in 928 (53.8%), on the left-side in 768 (44.5%) and bilaterally in 28 (1.6%) patients. The foreign bodies were inorganic substances such as beads, paper, napkins, toy parts, batteries, pencils, erasers in 1287 cases (74.7%) and organic materials such as hazelnuts, walnuts and fruit seeds in 437 cases (25.3%). The foreign bodies were extracted in outpatient settings in 1709 cases. Fifteen patients in whom the foreign body was located in the posterior region and/or who were uncooperative were treated under anesthesia. The most common complication was epistaxis. Septal perforation was seen in one patient with alkaline battery.Conclusion:In pediatric patients presented to the otolaryngology and the pediatrics clinics with complaints involving nasal obstruction, unilateral purulent nasal discharge, epistaxis, and foul odor, possibility of a foreign body in the nose should be kept in mind

    Glukoz 6 Fosfat Dehidrogenaz (G6PD) eksikliği, en sık görülen kalıtsal hastalıklardanbiridir ve X'e bağlı kalıtımsal geçiş gösterir. G6PD enzimi bütün dokularda bulunur.Pentoz Fosfat Yolunun (PFY) ilk basamağını katalize eden bu enzimin eksikliğinde;infeksiyon, bazı ilaçların kullanımı veya bakla yenmesi sonrasında neonatal sarılıkveya akut hemolitik anemi gelişebilir. Özellikle mitokondriyal yapıları olmayaneritrositler için PFY'u NADPH üretimi için tek kaynaktır. G6PD eksikliği olaneritrositlerde NADP'den NADPH'e dönüşüm normal düzeyde olmadığı için oksidatifhasara yatkınlık meydana gelir ve hemoliz oluşur. Oksidatif hasara uğramış olaneritrositlerde, hemolize artmış duyarlılığın nedeni tam bilinmemektedir. G6PD eksikliğinebağlı akut böbrek yetmezliği gelişebilecek olan bir komplikasyondur.Makalemizde fava yeme öyküsü sonrasında hemoliz ve akut böbrek yetmezliği gelişen;takibinde G6PD enzim eksikliği saptadığımız olgumuzu sunduk. Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme deficiency is the most commonhereditary disease and in hereditary by recessive X linked. G6PD enzyme exists in alltissues. It catalyses the first step of penthose phosphate pathway. In this enzymedeficiency, neonatal jaundice and acute hemolytic anemia may occur after infection,use of some drugs or favism. Especially the erythrocytes that do not acquiremitochondria, penthose phosphate pathway is the only resource for NADPHproduction. Because of the transformation of NADP to NADPH is not normal level inthe erythrocytes with G6PD deficiency, the susceptibility of oxidative damage increasesand hemolyses occurs. In the erythrocytes exposed to oxidative injury, the reason ofincreased sensitivity to hemolysis is not well known. The occurring of acute renalfailure in the adult with G6PD deficiency is a well known complication. We presentedin our case report, a case whom hemolysis and acute renal failure developed afterfavism and the follow ups G6PD enzyme deficiency is determined.

    Structural, electronic and phononic properties of PtSe2: From monolayer to bulk

    The layer dependent structural, electronic and vibrational properties of the 1T phase of two dimensional (2D) platinum diselenide are investigated by means of state-of-the-art first-principles calculations. The main findings of the study are: (i) monolayer platinum diselenide has a dynamically stable 2D octahedral structure with 1.66 eV indirect band gap, (ii) the semiconducting nature of 1T-PtSe2 monolayers remains unaffected even at high biaxial strains, (iii) top-to-top (AA) arrangement is found to be energetically the most favorable stacking of 1T-PtSe2 layers, (iv) the lattice constant (layer-layer distance) increases (decreases) with increasing number of layers, (v) while monolayer and bilayer 1T-PtSe2 are indirect semiconductors, bulk and few-layered 1T-PtSe2 are metals, (vi) Raman intensity and peak positions of the A1g and Eg modes are found to be highly dependent on the layer thickness of the material, hence; the number of layers of the material can be determined via Raman measurements.TUBITAK under the project number 117F09

    Does the Change in the Indications of Endoscopic Sinonasal Surgery Continue? Data between 1994-2018

    Objective: Endoscopic sinonasal surgery (ESS) has changing over the years in parallel with the developments in endoscopy devices, video-imaging techniques, and surgical instruments. In the present study we investigated whether the indications of patients who underwent surgery over a period of 25 years have accommodated to these changes.Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 1173 patients who underwent surgery in our clinic from 1994 through 2007, and 954 patients who underwent surgery from 2008 through 2018. The patients were divided into three groups as follows: chronic rhinosinusitis with polyps (CRSwNP), chronic rhinosinusitis without polyps (CRSsNP), and others. The changes in the indications during the first 14 years and the following 11 years were compared, and the results were statistically evaluated.Results: A significant decrease was observed in the number of patients who underwent surgery following the diagnosis of CRSsNP (p<0.001). In addition, a statistically significant increase was found in CRSwNP (p<0.001) and other (p<0.001) indications.Conclusion: When ESS indications identified in our clinic were reviewed, it was observed that the increasing trend in CRSwNP rate in the first 14 years continued, there was a significant increase in non-CRS indications in the last 11 years, and there has been an increase in patients with fungal sinusitis, especially in this group

    Çalışmada, insanların birebir ilişkide olduğu oturma mobilyalarının tasarımında, ergonomik kriterlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla bir “insan odaklı ürün geliştirme” yazılımının (Anybody Technology) kullanılabilirliği araştırılmıştır. Yapılan örnek uygulamada, oturma derinliği, oturma yüksekliği ve arkalık eğim açısı farklı olan 2 adet sandalyede oturan insanın kas–iskelet sisteminde oluşan yükler niceliksel olarak analiz edilmiştir. Ayrıca, 10 erkek deneğin katılımıyla uygulanan bir anket yardımı ile de bu iki farklı sandalyede oturan bireylerin çeşitli vücut bölgelerinde hissettikleri duygular niteliksel olarak belirlenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, ürün geliştirme yazılımından alınan veriler, anketlerden alınan veriler ile tutarlı olup, insan odaklı ürün geliştirme yazılımının tasarlanacak mobilyaların ergonomik kriterlerinin belirlenmesinde kullanılabilir olduğunu doğrulamaktadır

Intraoral resection of retropharyngeal SFT can be preoperatively performed by meticulous assessment of the extent and vasculature of the tumor with radiological guidance

    Pseudotrombositopeni kanama riskinde artışa neden olmayan ve trombosit transfüzyonu gerektirmeyen bir iyatrojenik laboratuar fenomenidir. Etilendiaminotetraasetik asid'e (EDTA) bağlı pseudotrombositopeni, otomatik kan sayımında yalancı olarak trombosit sayısındaki azalmayı tanımlamaktadır. Kan örneklerinin EDTA ile antikoagule edilmesi sonucunda normal kişilerde oluşabileceği gibi farklı hastalıkların seyrinde de gözlenebilmektedir. Bu yazıda hepatit A infeksiyonu seyrinde gözlenen bir EDTA bağımlı pseudotrombositopeni olgusu sunulmuştur. Olgu halen devam eden pseudotrombositopeni nedeniyle izlenmektedir. Pseudothrombocytopenia is an iatrogenic laboratory phenomenon that does not increase the risk of bleeding or the need for platelet transfusion. The term ethylenediaminotetraacetic acid (EDTA) induced pseudothrombocytopenia, defines false low platelet count when measured with automatic counters. It may occur in both normal individuals and patients with a variety of diseases when their blood samples are anticoagulated with EDTA. Here we report a patient with EDTA induced pseudothrombocytopenia during the course of hepatitis A infection. The patient is still being followed up with pseudothrombocytopenia

    Evaluation of the placenta with relative apparent diffusion coefficient and T2 signal intensity analysis

    PURPOSEWe aimed to test the null hypothesis that relative apparent diffusion coefficient (rADC) and relative signal intensity values (rSIHASTE) do not change in the evaluation of placental maturation with advancing gestational age.MATERIALS AND METHODSFifty-six fetuses with diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) data were enrolled in this retrospective study. Fetuses were analyzed in three different gestational age groups: group 1, 18–23 weeks; group 2, 24–28 weeks; and group 3, 29–38 weeks. The rADC (mean ADC/ADCglobe) and rSIHASTE values (mean SIHASTE/SIglobe) were obtained. Two radiologists experienced in fetal MRI who were blinded to the patient information reviewed MRI images independently. Kruskal-Wallis Test was used to compare the rADC and rSIHASTE with gestational age groups. The agreement between the two blinded readers was tested using Krippendorff’s alpha ratio.RESULTSBoth placental rADC values and placental rSIHASTE values were not significantly different between the gestational age groups (P = 0.688 and P = 0.280, respectively). rADC and rSIHASTE measurements were reproducible with a good agreement between the two readers (Krippendorff’s alpha ratio was 0.613 and 0.778, respectively).CONCLUSIONThe rADC and rSIHASTE values do not change with advancing gestational age
