Growth and Characterization of CuO Nanostructures on Si for the Fabrication of CuO/p-Si Schottky Diodes
CuO interlayers in the CuO/p-Si Schottky diodes were fabricated by using CBD and sol-gel methods. Deposited CuO layers were characterized by SEM and XRD techniques. From the SEM images, it was seen that the film grown by CBD method is denser than the film grown by sol-gel method. This result is compatible with XRD results which show that the crystallization in CBD method is higher than it is in sol-gel method. For the electrical investigations, current-voltage characteristics of the diodes have been studied at room temperature. Conventional I-V and Norde’s methods were used in order to determine the ideality factor, barrier height, and series resistance values. It was seen that the morphological and structural analysis are compatible with the results of electrical investigations
Canine Filariosis Around Istanbul, Turkey Employing the Naphtol AS-TR Phosphatase Technique
The aim of this study was to find the prevalence of filarial nematodes in dogs in Istanbul, Turkey and identify the species by using naphtol AS-TR phosphatase technique. A total of 286 blood samples were taken from the dogs of different areas of Istanbul, Turkey, between March 1999 and November 2002. The Knott technique was used to detect the microfilariae in blood. Two dogs were found to be positive for microfilariae. The positive blood samples were stained by naphtol AS-TR phosphatase for differentiation. The microfilariae were identified as Dipetalonema recondition. In this study, differentiation of canine microfilaria based on somatic distribution of acid phosphatase activity was performed for the first time and according to these results D. reconditum was reported for the first time from Turkey
Synthesis of 4,5-disubstituted-2-thioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidines and investigation of their acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, carbonic anhydrase I/II inhibitory and antioxidant activities.
A series of tetrahydropyrimidinethiones were synthesized from thiourea, β-diketones and aromatic aldehydes, such as p-tolualdehyde, p-anisaldehyde, o-tolualdehyde, salicylaldehyde and benzaldehyde. These cyclic thioureas showed good inhibitory action against acetylcholine esterase (AChE), butyrylcholine esterase (BChE), and human (h) carbonic anhydrase (CA) isoforms I and II. AChE and BChE inhibitions were in the range of 6.11-16.13 and 6.76-15.68 nM, respectively. hCA I and II were effectively inhibited by these compounds, with Ki values in the range of 47.40-76.06 nM for hCA I, and of 30.63-76.06 nM for hCA II, respectively. The antioxidant activity of the cyclic thioureas was investigated by using different in vitro antioxidant assays, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH·) radical scavenging, Cu2+ and Fe3+ reducing, and Fe2+ chelating activities
Ion source and LEBT of KAHVELab proton beamline
The KAHVE Laboratory, at Bo\u{g}azi\c{c}i University, Istanbul, Turkey is
home to an educational proton linac project. The proton beam will originate
from a 20 keV H+ source and will be delivered to a two module Radio Frequency
Quadrupole (RFQ) operating at 800 MHz via a low energy beam transport (LEBT)
line. Currently, the design phase being over, commissioning and stability tests
are ongoing for the proton beamline which is already produced and installed
except the RFQ which is being manufactured. This work summarizes the design,
production and test phases of the ion source and LEBT line components
Human MLH1 deficiency predisposes to hematological malignancy and neurofibromatosis type 1
Heterozygous germ-line mutations in the DNA mismatch repair genes lead to hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer. The disease susceptibility of individuals who constitutionally lack both wild-type alleles is unknown. We have identified three offspring in a hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer family who developed hematological malignancy at a very early age, and at least two of them displayed signs of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). DNA sequence analysis and allele-specific amplification in two siblings revealed a homozygous MLH1 mutation (C676T → Arg226Stop). Thus, a homozygous germ- line MLH1 mutation and consequent mismatch repair deficiency results in a mutator phenotype characterized by leukemia and/or lymphoma associated with neurofibromatosis type 1
Short Naphthalene Organophosphonate Linkers to Microporous Frameworks
We report two novel 3D porous metal-organophosphonate metal organic frameworks (MOFs) [{Cu(4, 4’-bpy)0.5(1,4-NDPA-H2)] (1), [{Cu2(4,4’-bpy)0.5}(1,4-NDPA)] (2) and a non-porous [{Cu(4, 4’-bpy)}(2,6-NDPA-H2)] (3) constructed using the structurally rigid 1,4-naphthalenediphosphonic acid (1,4-NDPA-H4) and 2,6-naphthalenediphosphonic acid (2,6-NDPA-H4). 1 and 2 exhibit high surface areas obtained using the structurally rigid and short aromatic organophosphonate linkers with copper. The compound 1 has been further analyzed by TGA and Quantum Design PPMS vibrating sample magnetometer
Investigation of in vitro effects of ethephon and chlorpyrifos, either alone or in combination, on rat intestinal muscle contraction
A range of pesticides is widely used in pest management and the chances of exposure to multiple organophosphorus (OP) compounds simultaneously are high, especially from dietary and other sources. Although health hazards of individual OP insecticides have been relatively well characterized, there is lesser information on the interactive toxicity of multiple OP insecticides. The aim of this study is to elicit the possible interactions in case combined exposure of an OP pesticide chlorpyrifos (CPF) and a plant growth regulator ethephon (ETF) which are used worldwide. The ileum segments of 3 months old Wistar Albino male rats were used in isolated organ bath containing Tyrode solution. ETF and CPF were incubated (10−7 M concentration) separately or in combination with each other to ileum and their effects on acetylcholine-induced contractions were studied. The data obtained from this study show that, single and combined exposure to the agents caused agonistic interactions with regard to potency of ACh whereas they caused a decrease on Emax value of ACh. These findings suggest that exposure to these agents which have direct and indirect cholinergic effects, may cause developing clinical responses with small doses and earlier but the extent of toxicity will be lower
