Assessing professional skills in engineering education
This paper addresses the issue of developing and assessing professional skills in higher education programs. This includes defining and assessing these skills, in the contexts of an individual course unit and for an entire degree program. Identifying forms of assessment that are seen as authentic, meaningful and understandable by the students, teaching staff and curriculum developers are of utmost importance if professional skills are to be accepted and included in the formal curriculum. This can be particularly important in programs that aim to offer students a truly collaborative learning experience in a culturally diverse team. Reflections are presented as one example of an assessment method that fits this requirement. Building assessment based on the notion of threshold concepts is introduced in the context of an open ended group project course unit at Uppsala University

Critical thinking, peer-writing, and the importance of feedback.
Critical thinking is one of the key competencies listed by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) [1], a central European Community organization, and is also mentioned as a learning outcome for higher education by international organizations, such as ABET, ACM, and IEEE, as well as in numerous national and university legislations regarding higher education degrees. The ability to communicate, not least in writing, is another important competence our students are supposed to gain during their education. There is thus high agreement regarding the importance of these competencies, but it is not clear how to achieve this
Motivation, Optimal Experience and Flow in First Year Computing Science
We examine the concept of motivation from the perspective of Self Determination Theory and give a brief overview of relevant results. We also consider the optimal state known as "Flow" and give an account of its conceptualisation in the theory due to Csikszentmihalyi. After discussion of ways in which these concepts can be measured, we describe a set of preliminary studies that investigate motivation and flow in the context of a first year computing class. We analyse student responses to enquiries about perceptions of motivation and flow experiences and look at links between them. We also discuss intrinsic motivation within the subject
