Social Interaction and Interactive Technology in the Preschool Classroom

    Get PDF
Increased use of technology in early childhood classrooms comes with new concerns about how technology may impact the development of social skills in young children. This mixed methods study examines how the use of a multi-touch table influences social skills and interactions of preschoolers in a head start setting. Eight children ages three to five were video recorded while using a multi-touch table during free choice time in groups of three for ten minute increments. Tracking sheets were used to track how often social interactions occurred for each child. Results indicated students played cooperatively 12% of their time and parallel to each other 3% of the time. The qualitative data indicated verbal interactions among peers included asking for help, encouragement, and sharing their likes and dislikes. Findings from the study highlight the importance and value of social interaction during group technology usage in the classroom and its implications for social development

Handbook for Higher Education. Vol. 2, Linguistic Pragmatics and Contextual Language: Scientific Foundations and Principles in Language Proficiency and Communication

The current era is marked by fast-paced, multi-faceted, global, cross-cultural communication on a daily basis, and communicative studies are rightfully part of many programs in higher education. I have taught a number of differently-focused language education programs and have read countless brilliant works on the matter. However, there are several common denominators, as well as there is probably an essence of what the most influential aspects in communication sciences are, that should be considered and respected in interdisciplinary domains. This book aims to serve as a resource for what I consider the essential theories and concepts, that crucially contribute to the broader domain of language proficiency. These selections are based on my personal experience in educative environments, and there are certainly a whole lot more excellent frameworks and concepts on the topic. The chosen content reflects a blend of theoretical knowledge and equally its practical applicability, hence the term "handbook" - attempting to integrate the essential insights from psychology, rhetoric and cultural studies, as well as pragmatics and discourse analysis. While it is certainly meant to be material especially tailored to educators and students, I deliberately tried to maintain a digestible language throughout this work, so any interested reader would have the opportunity to draw their conclusions and understand the key takeaways

Independence Starts with Teaching: Implementing Evidence-Based Strategies to Build Self-Advocacy and Independence in Students with Autism

Although children with autism are dependent on educators to provide guidance; never the less, students also need opportunities to exhibit independence and advocate for themselves. If they are always dependent on adults, students with autism are not able to increase their independence in functional and adaptive skills. Through ongoing studies and observations, educators found students who are taught through research-based structures, such as the least-to-most prompt hierarchy and Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication related handicapped Children (TEACCH) tasks, are better prepared to exhibit independent living skills during further education and independent living

What Women Bring to the Fight: An Analysis of Female Leadership in U.S. National Security

    Get PDF
Women have held some of the highest-ranking national security positions in the United States, though the overall number of women in leadership positions has remained relatively small until recently. The Biden Administration has achieved gender parity in their national security leadership positions, with over fifty percent of these positions being held by women. Since this is the first time in U.S. history that women have such a significant presence in the defense field, it is important to analyze and understand the changes that can come as a result. The purpose of this research is to broadly understand the impact that women in leadership have on national security policymaking. To begin to examine this aim, three questions are posed: What approaches do women take to lead in the national security field? Is the national security field different when women are in leadership positions? Does having more women in the national security field change outcomes? This study uses qualitative methods to approach these topics. This study examines ten interviews with women across the national security field, explicitly looking at their careers, experiences, and approaches to leadership. Using initial and focused coding and conceptual category development, I was able to use quotes and themes from interviews to analyze commonalities across all ten interviews. The themes that emerged from the coding process were assessed for their frequency across all interviews and the importance of the data in answering the research questions. From this process, a few key categories emerged, which included the differing traits between men and women in the field, the culture and attitudes of the field, the evolution of women in national security, and the impact that women have on national security. Ultimately, the themes and analysis of this research showed that the increase in women in national security leadership did contribute to changes in U.S. national security. The data did not show that women make different national security policy decisions, such as the decision to carry out drone strikes or provide military aid but did show that having equitable representation of women in the national security field can yield changes in the culture of the field as well as create more well-rounded, comprehensive decisions. The data highlighted that women in leadership positions make more collaborative environments and can help create a more flexible work environment to accommodate caregiving responsibilities for both men and women. Increased representation is also important in continuing a strong pipeline of women in the national security field. Because this study has a small sample size, the results may not be generalizable to the entire national security field. A larger study would need to be conducted to yield more generalizable results

The Personal Is Political: Promoting Empathy Through the Exchange of Personal Narratives About Gender Towards Social Change

This paper explores the potential of personal narrative in promoting empathy-based social change. It begins with the premise that humans are storytelling animals; we use narrative to make sense of the self and the world around us. Moreover, when stories are shared, a kinship is created between storyteller and listener based on the empathic response between the two. After reviewing the literature on both the value of narrative inquiry in psychological research and the science regarding the effect of stories on the brain, I propose a story exchange methodology that I believe could be used to increase empathic understanding around issues of gender. Scholarship on gender suggests that the socially constructed gender binary promotes essentialism and limiting hegemonic norms as well as mythologizing the perceived innate differences that separate us by gender. This paper explores the potential of story exchange to blur or dismantle the gender binary towards realizing a common humanity. Reflecting on the collective evidence presented in this paper, I argue that experiencing someone’s story, through which one can imagine being in the other’s place, has the potential to effect change on an interpersonal and larger scale through increased empathy and understanding
