T-Parity Violation by Anomalies

Little Higgs theories often rely on an internal parity ("T-parity'') to suppress non-standard electroweak effects or to provide a dark matter candidate. We show that such a symmetry is generally broken by anomalies, as described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We study a simple SU(3) x SU(3)/SU(3) Little Higgs scheme where we obtain a minimal form for the topological interactions of a single Higgs field. Auxiliary basis sets for density fitting second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory: correlation consistent basis sets for the 5d elements Hf-Pt

Auxiliary basis sets specifically matched to the correlation consistent cc-pVnZ-PP, cc-pwCVnZ-PP, aug-cc-pVnZ-PP, and aug-cc-pwCVnZ-PP orbital basis sets (used in conjunction with pseudopotentials) for the 5d transition metal elements Hf-Pt have been optimized for use in density fitting second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory and other correlated ab initio methods. Calculations of the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory correlation energy, for a test set of small to medium sized molecules, indicate that the density fitting error when utilizing these sets is negligible at three to four orders of magnitude smaller than the orbital basis set incompleteness error

Manufactures, archaeology and bygones: making a sense of place in civic museums, 1850-1914

This article considers the extent and nature of the ways in which civic museums created a sense of place in the period 1850-1914. The local has been shown to be constructed in visual culture, such as architecture, paintings and engravings, as well as in civic ritual, but museum collections and displays had the potential to present both emotional and scientific understandings of place together. The article examines the the construction of place through the identification of places with particular industries, through the historicisation of local government, through the display of the distant, archaeological past, and through displays focused on the 'everyday' past which was increasingly seen as imaginatively accessible within and beyond the present. It suggests that throughout the period museums were an important part of localities' attempts to define and enhance local attitudes especially in the face of rivalry or perceived 'London-centric' attitudes. However, they were torn between presenting the locality as progressive and modern, or as historically rooted, forwards or backwards facing; and equally they had to tread a fine line between presenting the locality as parochial or as having a universal importance

The use of games in the library is a currently trending topic of discussion and writing in the Library and Information Science profession. Upon first consideration, gaming may seem to be irrelevant at best and a waste of time and resources at worst. However, gaming does have several significant implications for all types of libraries, including greater exposure to new information technologies and the sense of community that a gaming program can foster. Thus, libraries should seriously consider the benefits of gaming programs and be prepared to carefully develop collection policies and to properly plan gaming opportunities for their patrons. The following literature review highlights how other libraries have accomplished these goals, provides examples of the different types of gaming programs that can be implemented in libraries, and explains the advantages for the library that come with a gaming program

Low Wage Service Sector Workers in New York City

Making enough money to survive in New York City is challenging for many, especially for those struggling at the lowest end of the pay scale. Every day tens of thousands of low wage workers in New York City must ask themselves these difficult questions: Which utility should I pay this month: the telephone or the gas? Should I walk to work -- more than an hour -- to avoid the $5.00 round trip subway cost? How will I afford to feed my family?New York Communities Organizing Fund, Inc. (NYCOFI) and New York Communities for Change (NYCC) surveyed low wage workers in a variety of industries around New York City to get a real-world view of life in one of the most expensive cities in the country. This paper makes specific recommendations that are informed by employment statistics, an analysis of the supports that are available to workers, and our own research in the field.We hope this paper will be a starting place for those low wage workers organizing for better conditions. We also hope it will be a factual source for those policy makers working for better conditions for low wage workers. In a city with so much wealth, no one should be struggling day-to-day just to get by
