    Individual and collective identity: Dorothy Allison's literary contribution to demystifying the poor whites/"white trash" stigma

    In this day and age, when uncertainty for minority groups seems to have resurfaced in the political arena of the USA, it is worth noting the work that writers such as Dorothy Allison have been performing during the past forty years. Determined to take down the barriers that outcast the poor whites from the mainstream, Allison‟s work feels as contemporary now as it did in the nineteen eighties. Adamant on telling things how they are, Allison‟s life and work represent a relentless effort to draw the reader closer to the people she grew up with, the poor whites, also known as „white trash.‟ This article serves as an introduction to Dorothy Allison‟s literary commitment to revealing the truth behind the stigma of being poor and white. In doing so, Allison‟s literary contribution to building poor whites‟ true identity will be examined through the analysis of the objectives behind her writing, her own identity seeking mechanisms as well as her honest attempt to show the humanness in being white and poor. A look into her work in which her contribution to collective and individual identity seeking can be clearly identified is being offered to conclude this article.En la era actual, cuando la incertidumbre para los grupos minoritarios parece haber resurgido en el ámbito político de los EEUU, merece la pena reseñar el trabajo que autores como Dorothy Allison han venido realizando durante los últimos cuarenta años. Decidida a derribar las barreras que separan a los blancos pobres de la mayoría, la obra de Allison parece ahora tan actual como lo fue en los años ochenta. Firme en que las cosas se cuenten como son, la vida y la obra de Allison representan un esfuerzo incansable por acercar al lector a aquéllos con los que creció, los blancos pobres, también conocidos como „basura blanca‟. Este artículo sirve de introducción al compromiso literario de Dorothy Allison de revelar la verdad escondida detrás del estigma de ser blanco y pobre. Para ello, se examina la contribución literaria de Allison a construir la verdadera identidad de los blancos pobres desde un análisis de sus objetivos literarios, de los mecanismos de búsqueda de su propia identidad así como su sincero intento de mostrar el aspecto humano en ser blanco y pobre. Una visión de su obra en la que se identifica claramente la búsqueda de una identidad individual y colectiva concluye este artículo

    Phytogenic mounds (nebkhas): effect of Tricomaria usillo on sand entrapment in central-west of Argentina

    Nebkhas, developed by the trapping of sand within the body of a plant, were studied in the Médanos Grandes system, arid central Argentina, during the springs of 2009-2010.In this system, formed by megadunes and overlapping dunes, nebkhas dynamism was analyzed considering their location on windward and lee slopes. In each nebkha, sand movement was studied through erosion pins and considering E, W, N and S orientation. Predominant winds blow from the south-southeast; however, no significant statistical differences were found in the erosion-deposition process, between windward and lee slopes. Nebkhas on the lee show slow growth and those on windward slope moderate deterioration. Tricomaria usillo is the dominant plant species in the nebkha formation process.     A Tale of Two Distributions: From Few To Many Vortices In Quasi-Two-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensates

    Motivated by the recent successes of particle models in capturing the precession and interactions of vortex structures in quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, we revisit the relevant systems of ordinary differential equations. We consider the number of vortices NN as a parameter and explore the prototypical configurations ("ground states") that arise in the case of few or many vortices. In the case of few vortices, we modify the classical result of Havelock [Phil. Mag. 11{\bf 11}, 617 (1931)] illustrating that vortex polygons in the form of a ring are unstable for N7N \geq7. Additionally, we reconcile this modification with the recent identification of symmetry breaking bifurcations for the cases of N=2,,5N=2,\dots,5. We also briefly discuss the case of a ring of vortices surrounding a central vortex (so-called N+1N+1 configuration). We finally examine the opposite limit of large NN and illustrate how a coarse-graining, continuum approach enables the accurate identification of the radial distribution of vortices in that limit.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure

    A dc voltage biased II-VI semiconductor multiquantum well structure attached to normal contacts exhibits self-sustained spin-polarized current oscillations if one or more of its wells are doped with Mn. Without magnetic impurities, the only configurations appearing in these structures are stationary.     The evolution of gene duplicates in angiosperms and the impact of protein-protein interactions and the mechanism of duplication

    Gene duplicates, generated through either whole genome duplication (WGD) or small-scale duplication (SSD), are prominent in angiosperms and are believed to play an important role in adaptation and in generating evolutionary novelty. Previous studies reported contrasting evolutionary and functional dynamics of duplicate genes depending on the mechanism of origin, a behavior that is hypothesized to stem from constraints to maintain the relative dosage balance between the genes concerned and their interaction context. However, the mechanism ultimately influencing loss and retention of gene duplicates over evolutionary time are not yet fully elucidated. Here, by using a robust classification of gene duplicates in Arabidopsis thaliana, Solanumlycopersicum, and Zea mays, large RNAseq expression compendia and an extensive protein-protein interaction (PPI) network from Arabidopsis, we investigated the impact of PPIs on the differential evolutionary and functional fate ofWGD and SSD duplicates. In all three species, retained WGD duplicates show stronger constraints to diverge at the sequence and expression level than SSD ones, a pattern that is also observed for shared PPI partners between Arabidopsis duplicates. PPIs are preferentially distributed among WGD duplicates and specific functional categories. Furthermore, duplicates with PPIs tend to be under stronger constraints to evolve than their counterparts without PPIs regardless of their mechanism of origin. Our results support dosage balance constraint as a specific property of genes involved in biological interactions, including physical PPIs, and suggest that additional factors may be differently influencing the evolution of genes following duplication, depending on the species, time, and mechanism of origin
