Open-source, custom interfaces and devices with live coding in participatory performance

This conference paper is available to download from the publisher’s website at the link below.This paper will discuss the use of open-source, custom interfaces and live coding in artworks and performance practices, using emerging devices that focus on revealing hidden, intimate and sensuous code of the body for manipulation and play. This paper review the new landscape of open-source artworks, with recent examples of such artworks, as well as one by the author, resulting in a new performance aesthetic that uses 'hacked' commercial, mobile and gaming devices for live coding, performance and interactive artworks. It discusses how dancers, live artists, musicians and others are participating in the DIY and 'Maker' movement, to create exciting wearable electronics and mobile applications for performance enhancement. The author will consider the possibilities of playful, expressive, gestural, and live coding, as well as using the DIY Maker ethos in multi-sensory particpatory performances with new devices. The author's own artistic research has involved re-combinatory practices and hybridisations of participatory performance, mobile media, wearable biofeedback sensors and live database interaction in a recent performance project MINDtouch. Her new collaborative work Hacking the Body, is about making participatory performances and interactive dance pieces that expose 'code' of the inner body

Origin of the viewing-angle dependence of the optical continuum emission in quasars

The orientation-dependence of the optical continuum emission in radio-loud quasars is investigated using a new, complete sample of low-frequency-selected quasars, the Molonglo Quasar Sample (MQS). The optical continuum is found to be highly anisotropic, brightening continuously from lobe- to core-dominated quasars by 3-5 mag. It is argued that aspect-dependent extinction, rather than relativistic boosting as has been previously proposed, provides the simplest explanation consistent with the data. The reddening hypothesis is supported by both the steeper optical slopes and the larger Balmer decrements found in lobe-dominated quasars, as well as the stronger anisotropy seen at blue wavelengths. The dust responsible is shown to be physically associated with the quasar, lying mostly at radii between the broad and narrow-line regions in a clumpy distribution. Such a geometry is reminiscent of a torus. However, substantial numbers of dust clouds must lie within the torus opening angle, contributing to an increasing average optical depth with increasing viewing angle away from the jet axis.Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures, MNRAS accepte

The discursive construction of EU counter-terrorism policy: writing the ‘migrant other’, securitisation and control

This article argues that the EU counter-terrorism policy reflects a deep-rooted mistrust or fear of the ‘migrant other’. The first half of the article focuses on the discursive construction of terrorism and the concept of securitisation. Drawing on Foucault and in line with scholars such as Campbell (1992), Milliken (1999) and Hülsse and Spencer (2008) the concept of discourse advocated here is one that is above individual discourse participant; the EU is a place where power/knowledge meets and is refracted back into social and political life. An alternative conception of securitisation is offered in order to demonstrate the processes involved in the discursive construction of the ‘migrant other’ as a security threat. The second half of the article will identify two meta-narratives linked to the construction of the ‘migrant other’ within the EU counter-terrorism policy. The first of these narratives constructs the ‘terrorist other’ as a threat to the globalised, ‘open’ society of the EU. This has the implicit effect of constructing and conflating the ‘migrant other’ with the threat of terrorism. The second meta-narrative that will provide the focus of analysis is a contingency-based discourse that constructs the ‘migrant other’ as in need of control in order to prevent the possibility of future terrorist attacks
