Childhood and migration in Europe : portraits of mobility, identity and belonging in Contemporary Ireland

    No full text
Childhood and Migration in Europe. Portraits of Mobility, Identity and Belonging in Contemporary Ireland paints a nuanced picture of the world, experiences and everyday lives of migrant children and young people who migrated to Ireland during the Celtic Tiger era (from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s). The analyses show and explore the transnational lives of young migrants of different backgrounds and statuses, whose voices are usually not heard. In contrast to most other works on the subject, which tend to concentrate on the dominant adult-centric perspectives, consideration is given here instead to a child’s viewpoint. The empirical grounding of this work stems from research with child participants. Although the book was published in 2011, it may be inspirational for researchers today due to the current situation of migrants in Ireland and children-oriented methods presented in the research. The volume contains important and interesting material from the perspective of contemporary migration processes

    Congenital Abdominal Anomalies

Introduction: Abdominal anomalies that appear during intrauterine life are complex due to many organs that are affected. In cases, the ultrasound appearance is a cystic image with different content and the differential diagnosis is often difficult. Body—research methods: the organs affected by abdominal congenital anomalies involve the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, duodenum, small bowel or colon, and gall bladder), the kidney and urinary tract, the peritoneal cavity (ascites), suprarenal glands, and tumors of the reproductive system (especially the ovaries). In order to identify the affected structures, it is mandatory to know the normal aspect of the abdominal content at different gestational ages. The diagnosis may be very difficult, but its accuracy is important, considering the need of further counseling the couple. In minor conditions, without chromosomal anomalies or associations, the outcome is usually good, and there are even possibilities of in utero treatment. In severe conditions, with poor outcome, the couple can choose to terminate the pregnancy, after counseling is provided. Conclusion: abdominal congenital anomalies are common findings in ultrasound screenings for anomalies in all the trimesters of pregnancy and their recognition is important for subsequent management

Secondary giant cell glioblastoma in a multiple drug abuser - simple association or ethiopathogenic correlation? Case presentation and literature review

    Get PDF
Experimental investigations have shown that drug abuse initiates a cascade of pathophysiological events including toxic and hypoxic-ischemic injury on neurons, microglia and astrocytes, which finally lead to widespread disturbances in the brain. There are many reports about the psychiatric and neurologic effects of multiple drug abuse, but only a few clinical studies reporting possible correlation between recreational illicit drugs and gliomas. In this paper we present the case of a 40 years-old male patient, with a long history (almost ten years) of multiple drug abuse, including cocaine, heroin, marijuana, ethnobotanical drugs and nicotine, who was diagnosed and surgically treated for a supratentorial secondary giant cell glioblastoma (sgcGB) developed in a diffuse astrocytoma NOS. Depending on the type of the illicit drug used by the patient and the moment of life he used them, the morphological features identified in the histological samples of our patient confirmed the gliomagenesis effect of chronic multiple drug abuse, but also its inhibitory effects on tumour cells growth. This was due to the fact that although the tumour was large in size and caused brain sub-falcine herniation, the patient reported the onset of seizures only late in the evolution. In conclusion, the diagnosis of a brain tumour should take into consideration not only patient's clinical and imaging data, but also his lifestyle, especially his addiction to recreational drugs

Postpartum depression: Prevention and multimodal therapy

    Get PDF
A woman goes through many biological (hormonal, physical), psychological (emotional), and socio-cultural changes during pregnancy. Furthermore, changes also occur in the mother\u27s familial and interpersonal world after childbirth. While some mothers have positive emotions at birth, such as joy and pleasure, others complain of negative experiences varying from sadness and depression to psychosis. Thus, the risk of depression is higher for women during the postpartum period, having a tendency to decrease in most cases over the first 2 weeks after delivery. Unfortunately, this favorable evolution does not happen in about 1 in 4-7 women, who develops postpartum depression. Postpartum depression has generally the same features as any common depressive episode encountered at any other time in life. However, assessment of depressive symptoms in the parental period implies not only general tools (such as the Depression Scale of the Center for Epidemiological Studies or the Beck Depression Inventory), but also a specific evaluation using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Taking into account all changes that occur during the peripartum period, a multimodal approach for postpartum depression would be recommended, including an appropriate lifestyle (walks, ambient environments), counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and finally antidepressant medication when required. As a conclusion, postpartum depression may range from a mild and reversible episode to a severe and persistent form. Antepartum and postpartum screening, an early diagnosis, and a tailored approach to depression are essential for better results and prognosis related to both mother and child

Eric Thouvenel : Gaston Bachelard et le problĂšme-cinĂ©ma. Questions d’images posĂ©es Ă  un philosophe iconoclaste – [recenzja]

    Get PDF
High-grade cervical dysplasia in pregnancy – psychological and medical challenges

    Get PDF
Despite being rare, the incidence of pregnancy-related cancer is expected to rise as women continue to delay childbearing and give birth later in their reproductive years. In this broad category, tumors like breast cancer, dermatological neoplasia and cervical cancer are most common and tend to arise in women of childbearing age. All pregnant women with clinical and cytologic suspicion of cervical cancer, except for squamous atypia or low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, should undergo colposcopy, with or without biopsy, the latter being avoided if possible due to possible complications which, although rare, may involve preterm labor initiation. Some studies have attempted to assimilate comparable results of USG with MRI during the gestational period by determining the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of trans-rectal ultrasound (TRUS) in comparison to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In order to identify the proper way to diagnose and treat the disease, because of the complexity due to pregnancy, a multidisciplinary team consisting of a gynecologist, medical and surgical oncologist, and radiologist should be assembled. Both maternal and fetal wellbeing should be taken into consideration when the medical team must choose among termination of pregnancy, delay of maternal treatment, and iatrogenic preterm delivery. Psychological counseling also plays an important role and due to the sensitivity of the issue, should continue through gestation and the postpartum. In order to develop optimal guidelines for diagnosis, treatment, and outcome issues, large scale prospective studies are needed, but feasibility may be limited due to the scarcity of cervical cancer cases associated with pregnancy

Criticism and Comprehension in Philosophical Counseling

    Get PDF
The aim of the article is to analyze “criticism” and “understanding” in their relation to philosophical counseling. The article begins by the thesis on the need to define this type of counseling as an equivalent relationship between a counselor and a client. This claim is based mainly on the Socratic sense of the essence of philosophizing as a common pursuit of wisdom and cognition. Next, criticism and understanding which seem to be abstract concepts that belong to specific doctrines are considered as useful tools in the process of creating a philosophical attitude. In this sense, they acquire their existential aspect and prove useful in the practical application of philosophy

HPTLC assay of nicotine and cotinine in biological samples

    Get PDF
This study presents the development of a simple high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) method for the determination of nicotine and its metabolite cotinine in human plasma and urine. The following mobile phases: methanol: ammonia (100:1.5, v:v), chloroform: acetone: ammonia (48.75: 48.75: 2.5, v:v:v), methanol: chloroform: ammonia (48.75: 48.75: 0.5, v:v:v) and glass plates precoated with silicagel 60 F254 (20x20) as a stationary phase were used. Densitometric scanning was performed at 263 nm. Two different extraction procedures have been applied: liquid-liquid extraction using dichloromethane at alkaline pH and solid-phase extraction using C18 cartridges. Preliminary tests in order to establish the system of solvents for development, as well as the range of linearity, were conducted. The best separation of nicotine and cotinine was obtained by using methanol: chloroform: ammonia (48.75: 48.75: 0.5, v:v:v) as the mobile phase. The liquid-liquid extraction technique led to better results than solid phase extraction. The regression curves were linear (with a corresponding correlation coefficient higher than 0.99) in the quantities range of 200 ng–1000 ng/spot for both nicotine and cotinine. The UV spectra confirm the identification of nicotine and cotinine both in the standards and in the extracts after liquid-liquid extraction. The proposed method can be applied for the simultaneous evaluation of nicotine and cotinine in biological samples at toxic/lethal levels. Thus, the method may be applicable in lethal nicotine intoxication cases in forensic toxicological analysis
