Israel in the Age of Eminem

Throughout the past year, an outbreak of anti-Israel activities has erupted on a number of campuses across North America. Despite the admirably coordinated attempts by communal organizations to engage young Jews in pro-Israel advocacy, most Jewish students are not being reached -- indeed, many efforts may even be counterproductive. This creative brief explores this challenge. It is the result of focus groups with an 18-29 year-old target audience in which the impact of 120 communal advertising and marketing efforts were tested. These specific efforts were a springboard for a wide-ranging exploration of what might better appeal to this target group in terms of message, messenger, and mechanism

Compensation for Loss of an Economic Nature : An Australian Perspective

This paper first describes briefly the scope of the no-fault motor accident schemes which operate in Australia. It then sets out and evaluates the benefits payable under each for losses of an economic nature. These are benefits for hospital, medical, nursing, rehabilitation and like needs created by injuries in a motor accident ; for informal nursing services and assistance in the home, the need for which is similarly created ; for loss of earning capacity resulting from such accidents ; and for death so resulting. It does not deal with benefits for loss of a non-economic nature, such as pain and suffering (for which, as such, compensation is not generally payable under the schemes) and impairment. It nevertheless concludes that most benefits for loss of an economic nature should be integrated with the Australian social security system and that the true role of a no-fault scheme is to compensate for permanent impairment, since there is no general disability benefit payable under the social security system

Looking Back at Accident Compensation: An Australian Perspective

Soon after ACC was enacted the momentum for comprehensive no-fault reform shifted to Australia, where another Commission led by Sir Owen Woodhouse extended the New Zealand principles to address all forms of incapacity, including sickness, in an integrated scheme. The proposed Australian ACC model suggests the radical potential contained in the original Woodhouse vision, even though political events in Australia followed a different course from those in New Zealand. This paper explains the evolution of the Woodhouse principles in the context of Australian policy and politics, and offers reasons why the proposed scheme never came to enactment

    The Australian Picture

Australia faces a climate of change with accident compensation following recent high profile personal injury cases, the collapse of two major health insurers, and the release of the Ipp Committee Report. This paper follows Australia's response to these developments, focusing on New South Wales' initial reform of tort law, and suggests that the current and proposed changes may cause more harm to an already fragile system

Orphans and caregivers' perceptions of psychoeducational support provided at an orphanage

Abstract: Orphans in South Africa are subjected to a life of increasing hardship and distress as the result of ongoing exposure to the overwhelming amount of risk factors surrounding them; HIV/AIDS being one of the most detrimental. HIV/AIDS remains one of the world’s most prevalent epidemics, spreading far and wide across the globe. However, South Africa continues to have the highest rate of infection and number of recorded cases of HIV/AIDS. Taking the lives of thousands of people each year, the epidemic does not end with those who have been infected but continues to infiltrate the lives of the children left behind. HIV/AIDS has orphaned a generation of children. The plight of an orphan in South Africa is compounded by multiple risk factors owing to the context of poverty and crime which results in psychological, educational and social challenges. Children are left in traumatised and vulnerable states and need support in managing as well as coping with the loss of their parents. Owing to the complex living arrangements of orphans in South Africa, continued inhabitancy with family is becoming increasingly difficult as financial means in these homes are already exhausted or overextended. Therefore, the need for orphanages in South Africa remains an essential housing option for many of these children. Consequently, it is imperative that the psychological and educational support being provided in such institutions intervenes at multiple levels of a child’s environment to foster their well-being...M.Ed. Total Hip Joint Replacement Biotelemetry System

    Get PDF
The development of a biotelemetry system that is hermetically sealed within a total hip replacement implant is reported. The telemetry system transmits six channels of stress data to reconstruct the major forces acting on the neck of the prosthesis and uses an induction power coupling technique to eliminate the need for internal batteries. The activities associated with the telemetry microminiaturization, data recovery console, hardware fabrications, power induction systems, electrical and mechanical testing and hermetic sealing test results are discussed
