    The non-destructive study of museums objects by means of neutrons imaging methods and results of investigations

    Based on experience from many kinds of investigations with neutron imaging methods (radiography, tomography, time-dependent studies) and in comparison to conventional X-ray methods, the authors discuss the potential of future improved studies for cultural-heritage purposes. Whereas the focus of the paper is on the imaging aspect, other established techniques as neutron activation analysis (NAA), prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA), neutron-induced autoradiography and neutron scattering are mentioned too. Although a great potential for studies similar to those described in the paper exists, a considerable effort is needed to define the best-suited methods for the dedicated cultural historical request. A real barrier between the experts at large research facilities (as, e.g., neutron sources are) and the partners from the museums side has to be overcome in order to solve the problems. A joint European approach will help in this respect

    Adriamycin and cyclophosphamide are active agents in human and experimental tumours. Using the L1210 murine leukaemia, their effectiveness alone and in combination was studied. The combination is highly synergistic in this tumour, resulting in a greater than 50% survival rate when the agents used alone at optimal doses are not curative. DNA synthesis by tumour cells is substantially inhibited and the total ascitic population much reduced. In contrast, DNA synthesis in sensitive host tissues is less disturbed. There is no major difference in the pharmacology of the agents whether given alone or in combination. In very advanced disease the combination is no better than treatment with cyclophosphamide alone. The combination of adriamycin and melphalan in L1210 leukaemia also produces superior results to those obtained using either drug alone at its optimal dosage

    Complexity-based learning and teaching: a case study in higher education

    This paper presents a learning and teaching strategy based on complexity science and explores its impacts on a higher education game design course. The strategy aimed at generating conditions fostering individual and collective learning in educational complex adaptive systems, and led the design of the course through an iterative and adaptive process informed by evidence emerging from course dynamics. The data collected indicate that collaboration was initially challenging for students, but collective learning emerged as the course developed, positively affecting individual and team performance. Even though challenged, students felt highly motivated and enjoyed working on course activities. Their perception of progress and expertise were always high, and the academic performance was on average very good. The strategy fostered collaboration and allowed students and tutors to deal with complex situations requiring adaptation

    Cold Strangelets Formation with Finite Size Effects in High Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions

    We have studied the phase diagram and evolution of a strangelet in equilibrium with a finite hadronic gas. Significant finite size modifications of the phase diagram are found and their parameter dependences are studied. With the inclusion of finite size effects we have also been able to obtain the detailed properties of the cold strangelet emerging in the final stage of the isentropic expansion of a finite strange fireball in high energy heavy-ion collisions.Comment: 19 pages(RevTex), 11 Postscript figures; To appear in Phys.     Quantum Nucleation in a Ferromagnetic Film Placed in a Magnetic Field at an Arbitrary Angle

    We study the quantum nucleation in a thin ferromagnetic film placed in a magnetic field at an arbitrary angle. The dependence of the quantum nucleation and the temperature of the crossover from thermal to quantum regime on the direction and the strength of the applied field are presented. It is found that the maximal value of the rate and that of the crossover temperature are obtained at a some angle with the magnetic field, not in the direction of the applied field opposite to the initial easy axis.Comment: 15 pages, RevTex, 3 PostScript figures.     The Dynamics of Poor Systems of Galaxies

    We assemble and observe a sample of poor galaxy systems that is suitable for testing N-body simulations of hierarchical clustering (Navarro, Frenk, & White 1997; NFW) and other dynamical halo models (e.g., Hernquist 1990). We (1) determine the parameters of the density profile rho(r) and the velocity dispersion profile sigma(R), (2) separate emission-line galaxies from absorption-line galaxies, examining the model parameters and as a function of spectroscopic type, and (3) for the best-behaved subsample, constrain the velocity anisotropy parameter, beta, which determines the shapes of the galaxy orbits. The NFW universal profile and the Hernquist (1990) model both provide good descriptions of the spatial data. In most cases an isothermal sphere is ruled out. Systems with declining sigma(R) are well-matched by theoretical profiles in which the star-forming galaxies have predominantly radial orbits (beta > 0); many of these galaxies are probably falling in for the first time.     Production of Ultra-Cold-Neutrons in Solid \alpha-Oxygen

    Our recent neutron scattering measurements of phonons and magnons in solid \alpha-oxygen have led us to a new understanding of the production mechanismen of ultra-cold-neutrons (UCN) in this super-thermal converter. The UCN production in solid \alpha-oxygen is dominated by the excitation of phonons. The contribution of magnons to UCN production becomes only slightly important above E >10 meV and at E >4 meV. Solid \alpha-oxygen is in comparison to solid deuterium less effcient in the down-scattering of thermal or cold neutrons into the UCN energy regime.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figuer

    Post-surgical follow-up (by ELISA and immunoblotting) of cured versus non-cured cystic echinococcosis in young patients

    The study was designed to determine comparatively the prognostic value of immunoblotting and ELISA in the serological follow-up of young cystic echinococcosis (CE) patients exhibiting either a cured or a progredient (non-cured) course of disease after treatment. A total of 54 patients (mean age 9 years, range from 3 to 15 years) with surgically, radiologically and/or histologically proven CE were studied for a period up to 60 months after surgery. Additionally, some of the patients underwent chemotherapy. Based on the clinical course and outcome, as well as on imaging findings, patients were clustered into 2 groups of either cured (CCE), or non-cured (NCCE) CE patients. ELISA showed a high rate of seropositivity 4 to 5 years post-surgery for both CCE (57·1%) and NCCE (100%) patients, the difference found between the two groups was statistically not significant. Immunoblotting based upon recognition of AgB subcomponents (8 and 16kDa bands) showed a decrease of respective antibody reactivities after 4 years post-surgery. Only sera from 14·3% of CCE patients recognized the subcomponents of AgB after 4 years, while none (0%) of these sera was still reactive at 5 years post-surgery. At variance, immunoblotting remained positive for AgB subcomponents in 100% of the NCCE cases as tested between 4 and 5 years after surgical treatment. Immunoblotting therefore proved to be a useful approach for monitoring post-surgical follow-ups of human CCE and NCCE in young patients when based upon the recognition of AgB subcomponent
