    Lifetimes of Xi_{bc}^{+} and Xi_{bc}^{0} baryons

    Estimates of lifetimes and partial branching ratios for the baryons Ξbc+\Xi_{bc}^{+} and Ξbc0\Xi_{bc}^{0} are presented using the inverse heavy quark mass expansion technique carried out in the Operator Product Expansion approach. We take into account both the perturbative QCD corrections to the spectator contributions and, depending on the quark contents of hadrons, the Pauli interference and weak scattering effects between the constituents, using a potential model for the evaluation of the non-perturbative parameters.Comment: 15 pages, LATEX file, 2 eps-figure

    Electromagnetic radiation of baryons containing two heavy quarks

    The two heavy quarks in a baryon which contains two heavy quarks and a light one, can constitute a scalar or axial vector diquark. We study electromagnetic radiations of such baryons, (i) \Xi_{(bc)_1} -> \Xi_{(bc)_0}+\gamma, (ii) \Xi_{(bc)_1}^* -> \Xi_{(bc)_0}+\gamma, (iii) \Xi_{(bc)_0}^{**}(1/2, l=1) -> \Xi_{(bc)_0}+\gamma, (iv) \Xi_{(bc)_0}^{**}(3/2, l=1) -> \Xi_{(bc)_0}+\gamma and (v) \Xi_{(bc)_0}^{**}(3/2, l=2) -> \Xi_{(bc)_0}+\gamma, where \Xi_{(bc)_{0(1)}}, \Xi^*_{(bc)_1} are S-wave bound states of a heavy scalar or axial vector diquark and a light quark, and \Xi_{(bc)_0}^{**}(l is bigger than 1) are P- or D-wave bound states of a heavy scalar diquark and a light quark. Analysis indicates that these processes can be attributed into two categories and the physical mechanisms which are responsible for them are completely distinct. Measurements can provide a good judgment for the diquark structure and better understanding of the physical picture.Comment: 15 pages, Late

    A sequence {xn}1\{x_{n}\}_1^\infty in [0,1)[0,1) is called Borel-Cantelli (BC) if for all non-increasing sequences of positive real numbers {an}\{a_n\} with i=1ai=\underset{i=1}{\overset{\infty}{\sum}}a_i=\infty the set k=1n=kB(xn,an))={x[0,1)xnx<anformanyn1}\underset{k=1}{\overset{\infty}{\cap}} \underset{n=k}{\overset{\infty}{\cup}} B(x_n, a_n))=\{x\in[0,1)\mid |x_n-x|<a_n \text{for} \infty \text{many}n\geq1\} has full Lebesgue measure. The notion of BC sequences is motivated by the Monotone Shrinking Target Property for dynamical systems, but our approach is from a geometric rather than dynamical perspective. A sufficient condition, a necessary condition and a necessary and sufficient condition for a sequence to be BC are established. A number of examples of BC and not BC sequences are presented. The property of a sequence to be BC is a delicate diophantine property. For example, the orbits of a pseudo-Anosoff IET (interval exchange transformation) are BC while the orbits of a "generic" IET are not.     Nanocellulose as building block for novel materials

    This thesis describes the fabrication of novel green materials using nanocellulose as the building block. Bacterial cellulose (BC) was used as the nanocellulose predominantly in this work. BC is highly crystalline pure cellulose with an inherent fibre diameter in the nano-scale. A single BC nanofibre was found to possess a Young’s modulus of 114 GPa. All these properties are highly favourable for using BC as a nanofiller/reinforcement in green nanocomposite materials. In this work, the surface of BC was rendered hydrophobic by grafting organic acids with various aliphatic chain lengths. These surface-modified BC was used as nanofiller for poly(L-lactide) (PLLA). Direct wetting measurements showed that the BC nanofibre-PLLA interface was improved due to the hydrophobisation of BC with organic acids. This led to the production of BC reinforced PLLA nanocomposites with improved tensile properties. Nanocellulose can also be obtained by grinding of wood pulp, producing nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC). The surface and bulk properties of one type of NFC and BC were compared in this work. Furthermore, the reinforcing ability of NFC and BC was also studied and it was observed that there is no significant difference in the mechanical performance of NFC or BC reinforced nanocomposites. A novel method based on slurry dipping to coat sisal fibres with BC was developed to modify the surface of natural fibres. This method can produce either (i) a densely BC coating layer or (ii) “hairy” BC coated sisal fibres. Randomly oriented short BC coated sisal fibre reinforced hierarchical composites were manufactured. It was found that hierarchical (nano)composites containing BC coated sisal fibres and BC dispersed in the matrix were required to produce composites with improved mechanical properties. This slurry dipping method was also extended to produce robust short sisal fibre preforms. By infusing this preform with a bio-based thermosetting resin followed by curing, green composites with significantly improved mechanical properties were produced.     Breast cancer risk is increased in the years following false-positive breast cancer screening

    A small number of studies have investigated breast cancer (BC) risk among women with a history of false-positive recall (FPR) in BC screening, but none of them has used time-to-event analysis while at the same time quantifying the effect of false-negative diagnostic assessment (FNDA). FNDA occurs when screening detects BC, but this BC is missed on diagnostic assessment (DA). As a result of FNDA, screenings that detected cancer are incorrectly classified as FPR. Our study linked data recorded in the Flemish BC screening program (women aged 50-69 years) to data from the national cancer registry. We used Cox proportional hazards models on a retrospective cohort of 298 738 women to assess the association between FPR and subsequent BC, while adjusting for potential confounders. The mean follow-up was 6.9 years. Compared with women without recall, women with a history of FPR were at an increased risk of developing BC [hazard ratio = 2.10 (95% confidence interval: 1.92-2.31)]. However, 22% of BC after FPR was due to FNDA. The hazard ratio dropped to 1.69 (95% confidence interval: 1.52-1.87) when FNDA was excluded. Women with FPR have a subsequently increased BC risk compared with women without recall. The risk is higher for women who have a FPR BI-RADS 4 or 5 compared with FPR BI- RADS 3. There is room for improvement of diagnostic assessment: 41% of the excess risk is explained by FNDA after baseline screening

    Influences on the fraction of hydrophobic and hydrophilic black carbon in the atmosphere

    Black carbon (BC) is a short term climate forcer that directly warms the atmosphere, slows convection, and hinders quantification of the effect of greenhouse gases on climate change. The atmospheric lifetime of BC particles with respect to nucleation scavenging in clouds is controlled by their ability to serve as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). To serve as CCN under typical conditions, hydrophobic BC particles must acquire hygroscopic coatings. However, the quantitative relationship between coatings and hygroscopic properties for ambient BC particles is not known nor is the time scale for hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic conversion. Here we introduce a method for measuring the hygroscopicity of externally and internally mixed BC particles by coupling a single particle soot photometer with a humidified tandem differential mobility analyzer. We test this technique using uncoated and coated laboratory generated model BC compounds and apply it to characterize the hygroscopicity distribution of ambient BC particles. From these data we derive that the observed number fraction of BC that is CCN active at 0.2% supersaturation is generally low in an urban area near sources and that it varies with the trajectory of the airmass. We anticipate that our method can be combined with measures of air parcel physical and photochemical age to provide the first quantitative estimates for characterizing hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic conversion rates in the atmosphere.Peer reviewe
