Development of a protocol that allows safe consumption of the hypoallergenic apple cultivar Santana

    Get PDF
The apple (Malus ×domestica) cultivar Santana was shown to have a low allergenicity in a previously reported clinical trial. A protocol was developed to validate these results outside a clinical setting and to market the Santana as a hypoallergenic apple for large-scale consumption. This protocol was designed to ensure safe consumption of the Santana by consumers suffering from apple allergy. We tested the protocol in a pilot in 100 supermarket stores and evaluated in an internet-based survey with 295 respondents. Forty-one percent of the consumers with an apple allergy did not have an allergic reaction to the Santana. Only five percent of the allergic consumers that tried the Santana reported a strong allergic reaction. In concordance with this, the majority (78%) of the mild apple allergic consumers appreciated the Santana. The developed protocol is considered suitable for safe consumption of the Santana providing that information about the possibility of having an allergic reaction among consumers with a mild apple allergy is added to the label

Acute coronary syndrome in diclofenac sodium-induced type I hypersensitivity reaction : Kounis syndrome

    Get PDF
Drug-induced type I hypersensitivity reactions are frequent. Sometimes, acute coronary syndrome (ACS) can be registered in such patients, which may have a serious impact on the course and management of the allergic reaction. Because of potentially atypical ACS clinical presentations, the ECG is an obligatory diagnostic tool in any allergic reaction. Coronary artery spasm is the pathophysiological basis of ACS, triggered by the action of potent vasoactive mediators (histamine, neutral proteases, arachidonic acid products) released from the cells involved in type I hypersensitivity. Allergic angina and allergic myocardial infarction are referred to as Kounis Syndrome. We describe herein a case of ACS in a patient with registered systemic immediate hypersensitivity reaction which developed following the muscular administration of diclofenac sodium.peer-reviewe

Glucocorticoids can cause allergic reaction in rare cases. A ten year old boy, known asthmatic, was treated with intramuscular injection of glucocorticoids, followed by nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. His lips turned pale along with palpitation and light headache. His right eye lid and lower lip were swollen. Heart rate was 177/min, and BP was 66/46 mmHg,. Patient spontaneously improved and symptoms resolved. IV fluids bolus, antihistamines or epinephrine were not required. The case was seen in September 2012

Interim Cconsiderations : Preparing for the potential management of anaphylaxis at COVID-19 vaccination sites summary

    Get PDF
Anaphylaxis is an acute and potentially life-threatening serious allergic reaction. Severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of any COVID-19 vaccine or any component of the COVID-19 vaccine listed in the prescribing information is a contraindication to vaccination. A history severe allergic reaction to any other vaccine or injectable therapy is a precaution to vaccination.Appropriate medical treatment for severe allergic reactions must be immediately available in the event that an acute anaphylactic reaction occurs following administration of a COVID-19 vaccine.12/22/2020 CS321629-Ganaphylaxis-management.pdf2020883
